Sugared Ledge Bakery Undergoing Renovation

Sugared Ledge Bakery has temporarily closed in order to refresh its space and “enhance operations” at 920 North 204th Avenue in the Elkhorn area. The bakery plans to reopen in March with and expanded menu.

Bounce Culture Fitness Studio Coming to La Vista

Bounce Culture Fitness Studio plans to open in early March at 9735 Giles Road in La Vista. The locally owned boutique fitness studio will offer mini trampoline and barre workouts, which are considered to be low-impact and high-energy.

Runza Reopens Near 72nd & Pacific

The Runza restaurant at 965 South 72nd Street has reopened for business. The old building, which many years earlier had been a Bronco’s location, was torn down last summer and replaced with a completely rebuilt restaurant building.

Poke Boba House Closing February 28th in Old Market

Poke Boba House will close its Old Market location at 510 South 13th Street on February 28, according to an owner announcement on Facebook. The restaurant opened in April 2019 and serves poke, Japanese ramen, and milk teas. – Nicole Buntgen

Mazza Middle Eastern Cuisine Opening This Summer

Mazza Middle Eastern Cuisine plans to open early this summer in the former Sofra Kitchen space at 220 South 31st Avenue in Midtown Crossing. The restaurant will “blend traditional and contemporary Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors.” Mazza will be open for both lunch and dinner and will include a stylish bar, private event space and an outdoor patio.

Update from Omaha Streetcar Authority Meeting

At its February meeting, the Omaha Streetcar Authority gave notice to begin the vehicle maintenance facility and signed a 30-month lease with the property owner of an undeveloped lot at the northeast corner of 40th & Harney Street to be used as a lay-down site during construction of the streetcar line. Design of the Omaha streetcar system is now 100 percent done and under final review. – Isaiah Ang

Mutual of Omaha Ranked Among Top Employers

Forbes has recognized Mutual of Omaha as one of America’s Best Large Employers for the sixth year in a row. The company ranked #38 overall and had the highest ranking among large employers in Nebraska, as well as the third highest ranking within the insurance industry.

Típico Helado Plans to Open Old Market Store

Tipico Helado, a Mexican ice cream concept, plans to open its fourth location later this year in the Old Market. The store will operate in the former Niche space at 1209 Howard Street. Tipico Helado has locations at 15623 West Dodge Road, 5210 South 21st Street and 453 North Main Street in Fremont. The shop offers more than 50 unique flavors, from ice cream bars dipped in coconut flakes to specialty scoops infused with candy, chamoy, tajin and sweet cream.

Dickey’s Barbeque Pit Down to One Nebraska Location

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, the nation’s largest family-owned barbecue chain, closed or sold nearly 100 locations in 2024, leaving only 366 operational nationwide. The chain once had more than 500 locations. Nebraska’s only remaining Dickey’s location is at 12241 West Center Road in Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen

Pedestrian Improvements Planned at UNMC

The NU Board of Regents approved a $12 million project to reconstruct the crosswalk across 42nd Street in front UNMC’s Wittson Hall just south of the Dewey Street intersection. It’s the busiest crosswalk on campus. The project is being done in coordination with a MUD project to replace a water main. The pedestrian crosswalk project will remove an existing mid-street island and install a raised traffic table and narrow the traffic lanes. The project is expected to be completed by early 2026. – Isaiah Ang

JOANN Closing Stores in Bellevue & Council Bluffs

JOANN, the troubled fabric-and-craft retail chain, is closing its stores at 10521 South 15th Street in Bellevue and 3271 Marketplace Drive in Council Bluffs. The local closings are part of JOANN’s plan to close 500 of its 800 stores nationwide, after the retailer filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year. The JOANN store at 13415 West Center Road in Omaha is expected to remain open.

New Development Planned Southwest of 144th & Pacific

The City of Omaha is reviewing new plans for a portion of the Heartwood Preserve development. Developers are seeking approval of a preliminary plat southwest of 144th & Pacific Street. The multi-use development will be anchored by two medical office buildings totaling 180,000 sq. ft. Additionally, plans show six standalone retail buildings and a 5,500 sq. ft. restaurant. A 2-story, 120,000 sq. ft., mixed-use building on the southwest corner of the site will have ground-floor retail space, a parking garage and multi-family units on the second floor. – Isaiah Ang

“Brunchette” Restaurant Coming to 35th & Center

Know Good, a concept from the owner of Sweet Magnolias Bake Shop, will open this spring at 3528 Center Street, formerly Sunnyside on Center. The “brunchette” has operated full-time at Archetype Coffee in Little Bohemia since January 2023 and will continue there after opening its new location, which will focus on bagels, sandwiches and a small café menu. – Nicole Buntgen

Three National Retailers Coming to Council Bluffs

HomeGoods, Sierra Trading Post and Ross Dress for Less are planning to open at Manawa Power Center in Council Bluffs, according to The Lerner Company, an Omaha-based retail real estate firm. The three national retailers will occupy the former Gordman’s and Toys R Us building near 32nd & Manawa Centre Drive between Wal-Mart and Home Depot. The spaces are now under renovation. HomeGoods, Sierra and Ross have existing locations in Omaha but will be new to Council Bluffs.

Development Planned at SW Corner of 192nd & Maple

Developers are planning a mixed-use subdivision southwest of 192nd & West Maple Road. The Omaha Planning Board approved a preliminary plat that would divide the greenfield site into 12 lots for a commercial development and a 20-acre lot for multifamily development. The multifamily lot was originally planned to be zoned for R8 high-density multifamily, but after a neighborhood meeting, will now be zoned for R7 medium-density multifamily. R7 zoning limits density to approximately 40 units per acre. – Isaiah Ang

Downtown Bar Fights to Keep Liquor License

Krush Ultra Lounge, formerly Throwback Arcade Lounge, is facing the potential cancellation of its liquor license at 1402 Howard Street downtown. The Omaha City Council voted 6-0 to recommend revocation following multiple police incidents, including fights and a shooting. The final decision rests with the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Noli’s Pizzeria Closing Regency Location

Noli’s Pizzeria will close its Regency location inside Blue Sky Bar & Patio at 10730 Pacific Street on February 16. The New York-style pizza concept will continue operating at its Aksarben location at 6307 Center Street and Blackstone at 4001 Farnam Street. – Nicole Buntgen

UNO Joins Creighton as College World Series Host

The University of Nebraska at Omaha will join Creighton University as official co-host of the NCAA Men’s College World Series starting this year. UNO Chancellor Joanne Li said, “This partnership enhances our national visibility, strengthens UNO’s reputation as a leading metropolitan university, and most importantly, gives our Mavericks unique teaching, learning and research opportunities.” The college baseball season begins Friday, February 14th. Harney Street Bridge Demolition Delayed

Due to forecasts for snow Saturday and Monday, the demolition of the Harney Street bridge over Interstate 480 has been postponed, according to the City of Omaha. I-480 was scheduled to close Friday, February 14 at 9 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m. Monday February 17. A new date has not been announced yet.

NU System Generates $6.4 Billion in Economic Impact

The University of Nebraska announced this week that it generates $6.4 billion annually and supports one in every 20 Nebraska jobs. NU produces 11,000 graduates annually, with one in seven working-age Nebraskans holding a degree from the university. NU alumni generate $3.5 billion in additional earnings each year. If you add UNMC’s clinical partner Nebraska Medicine, NU’s total economic impact rises to $11.9 billion.

Voters Approve Millard Public Schools Bond

Voters approved Millard Public Schools’ $158 million bond issue in yesterday’s mail-in election with approximately two-thirds of voters in favor. The bond is intended to improve security at all 35 schools in the district.

Gambino’s Pizza Opens in Gretna

Gambino’s Pizza opened this past weekend at 11717 Bryan Street in Gretna. The company also plans to open a location soon at 3018 South 32nd Avenue in Omaha. Gambino’s has locations in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. In addition to the new Gretna store, Gambino’s Nebraska locations are in Fremont, Kearney and North Bend.

Dumpling Empire Plans Second Location at 158th & Maple

Dumpling Empire is expanding with a second location at 15825 West Maple Road, taking over the former Dickey’s Barbecue Pit space next to Wingstop. The new spot, just north of Hy-Vee, is expected to open in April or May. The Chinese restaurant currently operates at 5413 South 72nd Street.

Eppley Temporarily Splits into Two Terminals Next Week

Eppley Airfield’s next construction phase begins February 17. The entire central portion of the terminal will close, and the terminal will split in half. The closure will accommodate construction of a new central pavilion, which is a key part of the future terminal. During construction, the airport will operate as two terminals with each airline’s ticketing, gates and baggage claims located within its own terminal. The north terminal will house Southwest, United and Allegiant airlines. The south will have American, Delta, Alaska and Frontier airlines.

Crews Disassemble Tower Crane at Central Library

Crews started disassembling the 180-foot-tall tower crane that has been used to build Omaha’s future Central Library at 72nd & Dodge Street. The Liebherr 470 EC-B 16 Tower Crane could lift 35,000 pounds and had a jib length of 221 feet. Now that all the structural steel and major exterior pieces are in place, the tower crane is no longer needed. The said, there's still much work to be done on the $150 million, 3-level, 96,000 sq. ft. library and opening isn’t scheduled until 2026.

California-Based Juice Bar Chain Coming to Omaha

Nékter Juice Bar plans to open its first Nebraska location in the former Phoenix Pool and Spa space at 1405 South 204th Street. Shannon and Jeff Salem will be the local franchisees. California-based Nékter is an award-winning juice bar concept, offering juices, smoothies, açaí bowls and healthy snacks at more than 200 restaurants nationwide. The company was founded in 2020. The closest existing location are in Kansas City and Sioux Falls, S.D.

Two Omaha Chefs Named as James Beard Semifinalists

Two Omahans have been nominated for Best Chef: Midwest on the 2025 James Beard Awards Semifinalists list. They are Tim Nicholson from The Boiler Room and David Utterback from Ota and Yoshitomo. They were the only semifinalists from Nebraska. There was one from Iowa (Cedar Rapids), and one from South Dakota (Custer). Missouri had four, while Kansas had two. Winners will be announced June 16th in Chicago.

California Ice Cream Chain Opens Second Omaha Location

La Michoacana Plus Nebraska will held a soft opening February 8 for its second Omaha location at 5101 South 36th Street inside Isla del Mar South. The California-based brand, known for its Mexican ice cream and antojitos, opened its first Nebraska location in July 2024 at 2502 South 133rd Plaza inside Isla del Mar Restaurante 2. Indian Food Truck to Hold Grand Opening

Tikka Talk, an Indian street food truck, will host its grand opening and ribbon cutting on February 14 at 6212 Maple Street outside The Waiting Room Lounge in Benson. Otoro Sushi & Ramen will open in mid-February at 14459 West Center Road, replacing the former Panda House Chinese Restaurant. The new Japanese eatery will offer sushi and ramen, focusing on high-quality ingredients and traditional flavors. – Nicole Buntgen

Kansas Restaurant Chain Opens First Omaha Location

HomeGrown, a breakfast-and-lunch eatery featuring locally sourced dishes, has opened at 3555 Farnam Street on the ground floor of the 15-story Blackstone Plaza building. The Wichita, Kansas-based restaurant now has 12 locations in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Arkansas.

Eppley’s 2024 Traffic Compared to Other Mid-Sized Metros

Eppley Airfield broke its all-time passenger record in 2024, and it had more passengers than many other medium-hub airports. Omaha’s 5.28 million passenger count was more than Buffalo (5.0 million), Memphis (4.9 million), Louisville (4.8 million), Reno (4.8 million), Oklahoma City (4.6 million), Grand Rapids (4.17 million), Tulsa (3.25 million), Des Moines (3.18 million) and Wichita (1.81 million).

Isla del Mar Restaurante Opening Third Location

Isla del Mar Restaurante will open a third location at 7902 Towne Center Parkway in Papillion’s Shadow Lake Towne Center, replacing the former Mas Chingon. An opening date has yet to be announced. Study Profiles Remote Workers in Omaha

The Omaha metro area is home to nearly 70,000 teleworkers, representing 13.5 percent of the total workforce, which is close to the national average of 13.8 percent, according to report from CoworkingMag. Women make up 54 percent of Omaha’s remote workforce. Millennials and Gen Xers account for 40.4 and 38.4 percent respectively. Omaha’s remote workers tend to be college educated, and nearly half of them (47.9%) earn $75,000 or more. More than 28.2 percent of Omaha’s remote workers are in the finance, insurance and real estate sector.

Copps Pizza Opens at Nebraska Crossing

Copps Pizza recently held a soft opening for its newest location at 21209 Nebraska Crossing Drive in Gretna. The family-owned restaurant also operates in Papillion at 7474 Towne Center Parkway in Shadow Lake Towne Center. Copps recently closed two Omaha locations at 2829 South 181st Street and 7204 Jones Street. Zaytuna now occupies the Jones Street location. - Nicole Buntgen

Berry Law Expanding to Papillion

Berry Law plans to open a Papillion office at 312 Olson Drive. The space is being remodeled now with opening planned for early May. Berry Law is a personal injury and criminal defense firm with a downtown Omaha office at 1414 Harney Street.

Rally Coffee Co. Opens Today in Gretna

Rally Coffee Co. has opened a second location at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. That’s just north of Highway 370 in the same newly constructed retail strip where Net Par recently opened. Interior build-out is well underway. Rally Coffee’s current location is at 749 North 14th Street in North Downtown.

Boy Scouts Omaha Office to Celebrate Rebranding

Boy Scouts of America is rebranding as Scouting America, a nationwide change effective February 8. The new name reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to welcoming every youth and family and coincides with its 115th anniversary. Ashland Winery Wins National Recognition

Cellar 426 Winery in Ashland, Neb., earned top honors at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest wine competition in North America. All four of its entries received medals, including a Double Gold and Best White Blend under $23 for Linoma Lighthouse, a semi-sweet white. Snowbound, an off-dry white, also received Double Gold, while Apollo’s Blend, a dry red, took silver, and Big Dry Red earned bronze. - Nicole Buntgen
