Voters Approve Millard Public Schools Bond
Voters approved Millard Public Schools’ $158 million bond issue in yesterday’s mail-in election with approximately two-thirds of voters in favor. The bond is intended to improve security at all 35 schools in the district.
Gambino’s Pizza Opens in Gretna
Gambino’s Pizza opened this past weekend at 11717 Bryan Street in Gretna. The company also plans to open a location soon at 3018 South 32nd Avenue in Omaha. Gambino’s has locations in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. In addition to the new Gretna store, Gambino’s Nebraska locations are in Fremont, Kearney and North Bend.
Dumpling Empire Plans Second Location at 158th & Maple
Dumpling Empire is expanding with a second location at 15825 West Maple Road, taking over the former Dickey’s Barbecue Pit space next to Wingstop. The new spot, just north of Hy-Vee, is expected to open in April or May. The Chinese restaurant currently operates at 5413 South 72nd Street.
Eppley Temporarily Splits into Two Terminals Next Week
Eppley Airfield’s next construction phase begins February 17. The entire central portion of the terminal will close, and the terminal will split in half. The closure will accommodate construction of a new central pavilion, which is a key part of the future terminal. During construction, the airport will operate as two terminals with each airline’s ticketing, gates and baggage claims located within its own terminal. The north terminal will house Southwest, United and Allegiant airlines. The south will have American, Delta, Alaska and Frontier airlines.
Crews Disassemble Tower Crane at Central Library
Crews started disassembling the 180-foot-tall tower crane that has been used to build Omaha’s future Central Library at 72nd & Dodge Street. The Liebherr 470 EC-B 16 Tower Crane could lift 35,000 pounds and had a jib length of 221 feet. Now that all the structural steel and major exterior pieces are in place, the tower crane is no longer needed. The said, there’s still much work to be done on the $150 million, 3-level, 96,000 sq. ft. library and opening isn’t scheduled until 2026.
California-Based Juice Bar Chain Coming to Omaha
Nékter Juice Bar plans to open its first Nebraska location in the former Phoenix Pool and Spa space at 1405 South 204th Street. Shannon and Jeff Salem will be the local franchisees. California-based Nékter is an award-winning juice bar concept, offering juices, smoothies, açaí bowls and healthy snacks at more than 200 restaurants nationwide. The company was founded in 2020. The closest existing location are in Kansas City and Sioux Falls, S.D.
Two Omaha Chefs Named as James Beard Semifinalists
Two Omahans have been nominated for Best Chef: Midwest on the 2025 James Beard Awards Semifinalists list. They are Tim Nicholson from The Boiler Room and David Utterback from Ota and Yoshitomo. They were the only semifinalists from Nebraska. There was one from Iowa (Cedar Rapids), and one from South Dakota (Custer). Missouri had four, while Kansas had two. Winners will be announced June 16th in Chicago.
California Ice Cream Chain Opens Second Omaha Location
La Michoacana Plus Nebraska will held a soft opening February 8 for its second Omaha location at 5101 South 36th Street inside Isla del Mar South. The California-based brand, known for its Mexican ice cream and antojitos, opened its first Nebraska location in July 2024 at 2502 South 133rd Plaza inside Isla del Mar Restaurante 2. La Michoacana Plus has more than 80 locations worldwide. – Nicole Buntgen
Indian Food Truck to Hold Grand Opening
Tikka Talk, an Indian street food truck, will host its grand opening and ribbon cutting on February 14 at 6212 Maple Street outside The Waiting Room Lounge in Benson. Founded in 2010, the Iowa-based concept specializes in tikka dishes, wraps, and fusion snacks with Indian-inspired flavors. – Nicole Buntgen
Chinese Restaurant Converting to Japanese Cuisine
Otoro Sushi & Ramen will open in mid-February at 14459 West Center Road, replacing the former Panda House Chinese Restaurant. The new Japanese eatery will offer sushi and ramen, focusing on high-quality ingredients and traditional flavors. – Nicole Buntgen
Miller Orthopedic Specialists Closing Permanently
After 50 years in business, Miller Orthopedic Specialists is permanently closing February 28th. The practice has locations in 16221 Evans Plaza in Omaha and One Edmundson Place in Council Bluffs.
Kansas Restaurant Chain Opens First Omaha Location
HomeGrown, a breakfast-and-lunch eatery featuring locally sourced dishes, has opened at 3555 Farnam Street on the ground floor of the 15-story Blackstone Plaza building. The Wichita, Kansas-based restaurant now has 12 locations in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Arkansas.
Eppley’s 2024 Traffic Compared to Other Mid-Sized Metros
Eppley Airfield broke its all-time passenger record in 2024, and it had more passengers than many other medium-hub airports. Omaha’s 5.28 million passenger count was more than Buffalo (5.0 million), Memphis (4.9 million), Louisville (4.8 million), Reno (4.8 million), Oklahoma City (4.6 million), Grand Rapids (4.17 million), Tulsa (3.25 million), Des Moines (3.18 million) and Wichita (1.81 million).
Isla del Mar Restaurante Opening Third Location
Isla del Mar Restaurante will open a third location at 7902 Towne Center Parkway in Papillion’s Shadow Lake Towne Center, replacing the former Mas Chingon. An opening date has yet to be announced. The family-owned Mexican seafood and sushi restaurant also operates at 5101 South 36th Street and 2502 South 133rd Plaza. – Nicole Buntgen
Study Profiles Remote Workers in Omaha
The Omaha metro area is home to nearly 70,000 teleworkers, representing 13.5 percent of the total workforce, which is close to the national average of 13.8 percent, according to report from CoworkingMag. Women make up 54 percent of Omaha’s remote workforce. Millennials and Gen Xers account for 40.4 and 38.4 percent respectively. Omaha’s remote workers tend to be college educated, and nearly half of them (47.9%) earn $75,000 or more. More than 28.2 percent of Omaha’s remote workers are in the finance, insurance and real estate sector.
Copps Pizza Opens at Nebraska Crossing
Copps Pizza recently held a soft opening for its newest location at 21209 Nebraska Crossing Drive in Gretna. The family-owned restaurant also operates in Papillion at 7474 Towne Center Parkway in Shadow Lake Towne Center. Copps recently closed two Omaha locations at 2829 South 181st Street and 7204 Jones Street. Zaytuna now occupies the Jones Street location. – Nicole Buntgen
Berry Law Expanding to Papillion
Berry Law plans to open a Papillion office at 312 Olson Drive. The space is being remodeled now with opening planned for early May. Berry Law is a personal injury and criminal defense firm with a downtown Omaha office at 1414 Harney Street.
Rally Coffee Co. Opens Today in Gretna
Rally Coffee Co. has opened a second location at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. That’s just north of Highway 370 in the same newly constructed retail strip where Net Par recently opened. Interior build-out is well underway. Rally Coffee’s current location is at 749 North 14th Street in North Downtown.
Boy Scouts Omaha Office to Celebrate Rebranding
Boy Scouts of America is rebranding as Scouting America, a nationwide change effective February 8. The new name reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcoming every youth and family and coincides with its 115th anniversary. The Omaha location at 12401 West Maple Road will host a grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 10. – Nicole Buntgen
Ashland Winery Wins National Recognition
Cellar 426 Winery in Ashland, Neb., earned top honors at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest wine competition in North America. All four of its entries received medals, including a Double Gold and Best White Blend under $23 for Linoma Lighthouse, a semi-sweet white. Snowbound, an off-dry white, also received Double Gold, while Apollo’s Blend, a dry red, took silver, and Big Dry Red earned bronze. – Nicole Buntgen

Cheddar’s Opens Second Omaha Location
Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen opened this week – Monday, February 3rd – at 17373 Chicago Street in Village Pointe Shopping Center. The 7,500 sq. ft. building is east of Firebirds Wood Fired Grill and west of Scheel’s. Cheddar’s has an existing Omaha location at 120th & L Street. The brand is owned by Orlando, Florida-based Darden Restaurants, which also owns Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Ruth’s Chris and several other brands.
Cilantro’s Reopening This Month Near Oakview
Interior renovations are nearly done at Cilantro’s Mexican Bar & Grill’s new space near Oakview Mall. The restaurant plans to open in mid-February at 3309 Oakview Drive, Suite 101, which is immediately east of Reveal Salon & Spa. Cilantro's had operated at 144th & F for many years but closed that location back in October.
On the Border Mexican Grill Closes in Papillion
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has permanently closed its only Nebraska location at 8810 South 71st Plaza in Papillion. The Dallas-based restaurant chain had opened the Papillion store in July of 2023 in a former Pizza Ranch building. On the Border has approximately 150 locations worldwide. No reason was provided for the closure, but the restaurant had a Google rating of 3.7 and a Yelp rating of only 3.1.
Cabin Coffee Opens First Nebraska Location in Papillion
Cabin Coffee has opened its first Nebraska location at 99th & Portal Road in Papillion. The drive-thru coffee chain is based in Clear Lake, Iowa and currently has 24 locations in eight states. The closest previously existing locations are in Winterset, Iowa and Savannah, Mo.
Omaha Ranks #8 in Cybersecurity Employment Index
Omaha ranks #8 among the nation's top cities for growth in cybersecurity employment and wages, according to Upwind, which examined 44 U.S. cities. From 2022 to 2023, Omaha had a 10.6 percent increase in wages and 5.8 percent in employment. Here’s the top 10 in order: 1. Indianapolis; 2. Raleigh, N.C.; 3. Cleveland; 4. Kansas City; 5. The Spice and Tea Exchange Coming Soon to Village Pointe
The Spice and Tea Exchange plans to open this April between Chico’s and Garbo’s at Village Pointe Shopping Center. The locally owned retailer will offer more than 140 fine spices, 75 hand-mixed spice blends, 80 premium loose-leaf teas, gourmet salts, infused sugars and gift items. A tea bar will be included. The store’s mission is “to provide customers with a unique and interactive shopping experience that inspires creativity in cooking and wellness."
Estate Liquidation Company Opens Bellevue Studio
Caring Transitions of Greater Omaha, an estate liquidation company, recently opened a studio in Bellevue. The studio will serve as the base for their operations and online-auction services – CTBids.com. The studio allows the company to expand its consignment services for clients without a household full of items to sell or those just looking to sell high-value or unique items like jewelry, coins and art. The local franchise is part of national network of estate liquidators.
Mid-America Manufacturing Economy Looking Up
After seven readings below growth neutral in 2024, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, began the year with an index above the 50.0 growth neutral threshold. The index climbed to 51.1 from 48.7 in December.
California Beauty Chain Coming to Village Pointe
LaserAway plans to open its first Nebraska or Iowa location February 5th at Village Pointe Shopping Center. LaserAway offers laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, skin rejuvenation, Botox and more. The company was founded in 2006 in Beverly Hills, Calif., and has locations across the country. The nearest existing locations are in Kansas City and Minneapolis.
Visit Omaha Expanding Midtown Office
The Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau plans to expand its offices at Midtown Crossing. The city council will review an ordinance to approve an amendment to the lease agreement with the bureau and East Campus Realty. The amendment includes a rental increase that will total $142,479 over the term of the lease. The allocation will be primarily funded by hotel occupation taxes paid by out-of-town lodgers. East Campus Realty will pay for the construction, which will add 715 sq. ft. of contiguous office space. – Isaiah Ang
BBQ Restaurant Plans to Relocate
Smokin Barrel BBQ is relocating from 13508 Discovery Drive. While the new address has yet to be announced, the restaurant confirmed it will move to a site near 120th & I Street, with details to follow once the lease is finalized. – Nicole Buntgen
Construction Starting on Harney Street Bridge Over I-480
A major component of the Omaha Streetcar project is starting next week. On February 3, the Harney Street bridge over Interstate 480 will be closed for demolition and reconstruction. There will be periodic closures of lanes, exit ramps and intersections around the project, including on I-480. Any closures will be announced beforehand. The Harney Street bridge reconstruction is expected to be completed by the end of this year. – Isaiah Ang
Pop Culture Retailer Opening at Westroads
Box Lunch, a national specialty retailer, will hold a grand opening event for its first-to-market store at Westroads Mall this weekend – February 1st and 2nd. The California-based retailer donates one meal to a local food bank for every $10 spent on their pop-culture products. In Omaha, Box Lunch will partner with Foodbank for the Heartland.
Family Fare Closing Two Metro Locations
Family Fare will close two of its 10 Omaha metro locations: 7402 North 30th Street in Florence and 423 Sharp Street in Glenwood, Iowa. Parent company SpartanNash has not provided a reason for the closures. – Nicole Buntgen
Bob Kerrey Bridge Getting New Safety Feature
The iconic Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge will be receiving a slight modification due to a recent determination by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA requires installation of an obstruction light for aviation on top of the west suspension tower. Obstruction lights are used on tall structures and are generally seen as red blinking lights. The City of Omaha will hire Omaha Electric Service, Inc. and pay $50,000 to install the new light. - Isaiah Ang
Construction Beginning Soon on Builders District Parking Garage
The Omaha City Council approved a $2.47 million contribution to infrastructure improvements in the Builders District in North Downtown. The contribution will pay for relocations of several sewer lines, in addition to new street pavement, sidewalks and curb ramps. These improvements are related to a new city-owned parking garage at 1515 California Street that will be built by the developer. Funding will be sourced from sewer improvements bonds. – Isaiah Ang
Mio Italiano Restaurant Closes Permanently
Mio Italiano has permanently closed its location at 3001 South 32nd Avenue after nearly two years in business. In a Facebook statement, the owner shared that the family-owned restaurant did not develop as intended. The building was once home to the beloved Lo Sole Mio, which closed in 2022. – Nicole Buntgen
Cat Cow Yoga Plans to Open Soon in Papillion
Cat Cow Yoga will soon open at 9831 South 96th Street near 96th & Portal Road in Papillion. Gameday Men’s Health Coming Soon to West Omaha
NRP Construction is wrapping up work on a new location for Gameday Men's Health. The 2000 sq. ft. space is located at 18140 Burke Street and will be the second Gameday location in Omaha. The first is in Gretna’s Tiburon area. Gameday Men’s Health is the fastest growing men's health chain in the United States and is slated to open around March 1st.
Thrasher Foundation Repair Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Thrasher Foundation Repair is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The company was founded by Greg and Nancy Thrasher in 1974. Today the company has 150,000 customers and more than 600 employees. Thrasher is headquartered at 11844 Valley Ridge Drive in Papillion and has nine locations in six states.
