NDOT Begins Interstate 80 Widening Project

The Nebraska Department of Transportation has started a major project to widen Interstate 80 between Q Street and Highway 50 (“Sapp Bros. exit”). The project is adding an additional westbound lane from Q Street to Giles Road and an additional lane at the Highway 50 exit. The project also includes bridge repairs in both directions. To accommodate construction, capacity has been reduced from three lanes to two in both directions, resulting in significant delays. Lane restrictions will be in place until this fall.

Cadillac Dealership Under Construction Near Village Pointe

Woodhouse Cadillac is building a 25,798 sq. ft. auto dealership and service shop at 17335 Burt Street in West Dodge Pointe. The site is located along the north side of the West Dodge Expressway near several existing car dealerships. A Genesis dealership is also planned. – Isaiah Ang

Cajun Restaurant Now Serving Breakfast

Acadian Grille & Bar is now open for breakfast Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and then transitions directly to its full lunch/dinner menu for the rest of the day. The Cajun restaurant is located at 725 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills.

Local Smoke Shop Opens Midtown Location

Midtown Smoke Shop opened April 7 at 3201 Farnam Street next to Pickleman’s near 33rd & Farnam. The locally owned shop, which already operates three Omaha locations, is offering a 25 percent off special through April and plans further expansions in the future. – Nicole Buntgen

Johnny Sortino’s Pizza Closing Permanently

Johnny’s Sortino’s Pizza is closing permanently on Saturday, May 31st after 60 years in business. The owners, who are in their 70s, plan to retire. The restaurant is located at 7880 L Street.

Council Bluffs Opens Valley View Dog Park

The City of Council Bluffs will host the official grand opening of Valley View Dog Park on April 28 at 1300 Franklin Avenue. “This park has already seen great use by the community, and we are pleased to officially recognize its opening and the start of the busy season,” said Mayor Matt Walsh. As part of the event, the city will host an Arbor Day tree planting at 5 p.m.

Barnes & Noble Opens This Week in Papillion

Barnes & Noble will hold a grand opening Wednesday, April 9 for its store at 7949 Towne Center Parkway in Papillion’s Shadow Lake Towne Center. The 12,000 sq. ft. space was previously home to a Best Buy store. Barnes & Noble has an existing metro area store near Oak View Mall.

Local Med Spa Switches Locations

Ella Rose Aesthetics, a local medical spa, will host its ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 5 at its new location at 17725 Welch Plaza. The spa, which opened in February 2022 and was previously located at 17785 Mason Street inside Michele Strom Image Consulting, aims to blend medical expertise with an artistic touch to offer aesthetic treatments that enhance natural beauty and boost confidence. – Nicole Buntgen

Restaurant Planned for Pepperwood Village Parking Lot

The owners of Pepperwood Village at 156th & West Dodge Road are planning for a yet-to-be-named fast-food restaurant. The Omaha Planning Board will review a request to amend the development agreement to allow for the new building. According to the application, the restaurant will be 2,700 sq. ft. and have a drive-thru. It will be built east of the First Interstate Bank branch in the large parking lot. Site plans make it look like a Starbucks.

Kansas City Business Owner Discusses Streetcar Impact

Before Kansas City’s streetcar opened, Keith Novorr was vocally opposed to the project. As the owner of Michael’s Fine Clothes for Men, a store located along the streetcar route, Novorr is now a proud supporter. His walk-in traffic has grown 60 percent since the KC streetcar launched 10 years ago. “I was the biggest naysayer of this project in the beginning,” he said, “and now I’m eating crow.” Omaha’s Modern Streetcar Advocates’ recent interview with Novorr is available HERE.

Display Company RENZE Merges With Window Optics

RENZE, a provider of exhibits, branded environments, event graphics and point-of-purchase solutions, has merged with Window Optics, owned by Taylor Gautsche, and will add that company’s offerings to its current line of window films. Rebranded to Window Optics powered by RENZE, this division specializes in residential and commercial window tinting, offering various sun control, decorative and safety & security films.

The Oracle of Omaha Is America’s Most Popular Rich Guy

A nationwide study of 4,415 adults determined the popularity of America’s richest persons. Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha, ranked first with 52 percent of respondents saying they had a favorable view of him, according to Visual Capitalist. Bill Gates was second with 49 percent and Elon Musk was third with 39 percent. Buffett received an unfavorable rating from 26 percent of respondents. The biggest unfavorable rating (64%) went to Mark Zuckerberg.

The Spice & Tea Exchange Opens at Village Pointe

The Spice & Tea Exchange is holding a soft opening this weekend at 17255 Davenport Street, Suite 106, in Village Pointe Shopping Center. The locally owned retailer offers a variety of fine spices, handcrafted seasonings, loose-leaf teas, salts, sugars and gifts as well as freshly brewed hot or iced tea from an in-house tea bar.

Farm-to-Table Store Opens in Ralston

Barn Girls Farms held a ribbon cutting this week for its store at 5306 South 73rd Street in Ralston. The family owned business is a farm-to-table operation serving locally grown microgreens, farm-fresh eggs, grass-fed meats, freshly baked sourdough bread and a wine bar.

Developer Plans to Renovate Former Aksarben Suites

Another effort is underway to renovate the former Aksarben Suites hotel at 7270 Cedar Street. In 2021, a multifamily developer began the process of rezoning the closed hotel to high-density residential zoning, but progress stalled. This week, the Omaha Planning Board will review a Tax Increment Financing application for $3.5 million. The total renovation project will cost $21 million. The plan entails creating 197 studio units of 550 sq. ft. and 650 sq. ft. Rents would be $1,195 and $1,395, respectively. Construction is expected to begin this July and end by August 2026. – Isaiah Ang

Demand for Lakefront Living Skyrockets in Valley

Demand for lakefront living has skyrocketed in recent years especially in western Douglas County. Construction is in full swing in the Still Water Lake area southeast of 276th & Highway 275 in Valley. The 30-acre lake is part of a 134-acre, mixed-use project being developed by Hampton Development Services. Construction on the lake started in 2023. Forty-three single-family and townhome lots are currently available, and six have already sold. Six commercial lots are currently available; one has already sold. Thanks to western Douglas County’s high water table and rich deposits of gravel, the Valley area has become a hub of lake development.

Hybrid Nonprofit Opens Affordable Senior Living Complex

Omaha Economic Development Corporation, a hybrid nonprofit, will host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Larimore Senior Housing on May 21 at 3483 Larimore Avenue, formerly Immanuel Hospital. Remodeled by Boyd Jones Construction, the 45-unit senior living complex aims to boost affordable housing for low- to moderate-income residents in Omaha’s Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Areas. The facility will feature an internal theater and a large kitchen area to serve individuals with special needs. – Nicole Buntgen

Girls Inc. Plans to Build South Omaha Facility

Girls Inc. plans to open a recreational and services facility north of the South High School football stadium. The property is between Missouri Avenue and K Street. The rezoning and special permit application shows plans for a 2-story, 40,000 sq. ft. building with a surface parking lot and outdoor play area. The facility will have health and wellness space plus an indoor gym. Girls Inc. was founded in North Omaha in 1975 and has grown to serve up to 1,000 girls and young women a year. They are headquartered at 2811 North 45th Street and have a South Omaha location, the Emma Lozier Center, at 5407 South 30th Street. – Isaiah Ang

Baby Bob Bridge Now Open in North Downtown

The Baby Bob Bridge is officially open for public use. According to the City of Omaha, there was a soft opening last week, even though there are some final construction items pending. The Baby Bob Bridge connects the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge to North Downtown on the north side of the CHI Health Center. – Isaiah Ang

Snooze Mattress Company Plans West Maple Store

Snooze Mattress Company plans to open a third Omaha store at 17011 Evans Street, which is in the end-cap bay of a retail strip center just southeast of 171st & West Maple Road. The building has a Jimmy’s Egg and other retailers. Interior build-out is underway. Snooze Mattress has existing Omaha stores in the Shops of Legacy and Rockbrook Village. The locally owned franchises are among 16 total locations in nine states.

Chiropractic Office Opens in Gretna

NebraskaLand Wellness Center, a chiropractic practice, has leased 3,000 sq. ft. at 428 South Bryan Circle, according to Will Schneidewind of NAI NP Dodge, who represented the landlord. Drs. Colby and Megan Howard own the practice and plan to open on April 14.

The Brunch Box Expands to Oakview Mall

The Brunch Box, a breakfast-and-lunch restaurant in downtown’s Capitol District, plans to open a second location in the Oak View Mall Food Court. Owner Stephanie Goodrich and her business partner Robert Johnson will open the Oak View location this spring in a space once occupied by The Cookie Company. The owners have additional plans for space within the mall that they aim to announce soon. The existing Brunch Box is at 225 North 12th Street.

Apartment Complex Planned for West Shores

The developer behind the Urban Waters apartments at Prairie Queen Lake has plans to build another water-adjacent apartment project in far west Omaha. Planning board documents show plans for a 124-unit apartment complex in the West Shores lake community. The project consists of two, 4-story buildings located by the marina near Salted Edge restaurant. The first floor of each building would be enclosed parking with the upper three floors having apartments, including 67 one-bedroom units and 57 two-bedroom units. – Isaiah Ang

Creighton University Business Index Rises Dramatically

The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, moved above growth neutral of 50.0 for a third straight month. The index soared to 56.7 in March, its highest level since July 2022 and up from February’s 52.0.

Chase Bank Plans Grand Opening for West Maple Branch

Chase Bank will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting on May 1 at its new branch at 13720 West Maple Road. The nearest existing branch is located just southeast near 120th & West Dodge Road. Chase Bank currently operates more than 10 Omaha metro area locations. – Nicole Buntgen

Sheelytown Market Moving to Little Italy

Sheelytown Market, a plant nursery and gift shop, will relocate from 3522 Center Street near Hanscom Park to 1716 South 10th Street in Little Italy. Downtown Kansas City Residents Have Message for Omahans

Modern Streetcar Advocates, an Omaha organization that has helped develop much of the framework for Omaha’s future streetcar system, went to downtown Kansas City this month and interviewed residents and business owners to find out how that city’s streetcar has affected the downtown environment. Primo’s Reopens After Temporary Closure

Primo’s Modern Mexican has reopened its Aksarben-area restaurant at 5914 Center Street. The family-owned eatery temporarily closed last week but has returned with new hours and an updated menu featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner. Southwest Airlines Launching Seasonal Nonstops to San Diego

Southwest Airlines will launch seasonal nonstop flights from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield to San Diego starting November 22. The airline plans to offer the route for three months initially. The San Diego flight will be Southwest’s 15th nonstop route from Eppley, including both year-round and seasonal service.

Food Truck Debuts Today at Menard’s Parking Lot

The Shaara Halal Eats (S.H.E) food truck will celebrate its grand opening today -- Saturday, March 29th in the Menard’s parking lot at 708 North 120th Street. Locally owned by Moula and Shahanaz Shaik, the business is starting as a food truck but hopes someday to have a brick-and-mortar location.

Locally Owned Cafe & Bar Opens in Historic Keeline Building

La Traga-Zona has opened next to the Mexitli restaurant in the Keeline Building at 1622 Harney Street. The locally owned café and bar specializes in sweet and savory crepes. Signature offerings include the Banana & Nutella Crepe, topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup, and the Strawberry & Nutella Crepe. The menu also includes ice cream waffles, grilled ham & cheese sandwiches, milkshakes and alcoholic beverages.

Smoothie King Plans 5th Omaha Location

Smoothie King plans to open a fifth Omaha-area location. A building permit has been filed for tenant-finish in a new multi-tenant commercial building at 17902 West Maple Road. Fitness Club Opening in Downtown Omaha

Bloc Fitness will host its grand opening and ribbon cutting on May 6 at 2027 Dodge Street, southeast of the Joslyn Art Museum downtown. Upscale Cocktail Bar Coming to Aksarben Village

Oto, a high-end cocktail bar with an optimal, hi-fidelity sound experience, plans to open in October in Aksarben Village. Oto will be located in a 1,500 sq. ft. space on the ground floor of the HDR headquarters building adjacent to the lobby.

Omaha-Based Manufacturer Prepares for Tariffs Impact

Valmont Industries has developed plans to mitigate the impact of tariffs. The Omaha-based company believes these plans will enable it to be cost neutral in the second half of fiscal 2025 under both the current tariff regime and a scenario where there are no exclusions granted for goods the company imports from Mexico and Canada. The majority of products Valmont ships to U.S. customers are manufactured at one of 24 facilities inside the United States.

Food Truck Opening Restaurant in Bennington

A local food truck proprietor has plans for a brick-and-mortar location in Bennington. Johnny Rico’s Brooklyn Pizza filed a building permit to tenant-finish a bay in the retail building at 8001 North 157th Street. Current tenants in that building include Bennington Urgent Care, Hay Jay Café & Coffee and Rock Valley Physical Therapy. - Isaiah Ang

Rebel Rise Bakery Finds New Location in La Vista

Rebel Rise Bakery, a gluten-free bakery in La Vista, will soon open a new location, replacing its current store at 10717 Virginia Plaza inside M Salon Studios. In the meantime, the business will operate via online ordering. Rebel Rise has only been in its space since December 2024 and previously operated as a cottage kitchen. – Nicole Buntgen

City Council Approves Resurfacing Project on 144th Street

The Omaha City Council last week approved a resolution to fund an $8.6 million project to resurface 144th Street between Pine and Arbor streets and between Eagle Run Drive and Hillsborough Drive. Harrison Street will also be resurfaced between 132nd Street and Eastport Parkway. While the City will pay the total cost of the project, it will submit a request for reimbursement to the Federal Highway Administration, which may cover up to 80 percent of the costs. – Isaiah Ang

Roxxy Omaha Closes in Capitol District

Roxxy Omaha, a retro bar concept from Iowa City, has abruptly closed its Capitol District location at 1150 Capitol Avenue just west of Texas de Brazil. The venue, which opened in November 2023, is under the same ownership as The Stuffed Olive, a martini bar next door with locations in Iowa City, Cedar Falls, and Madison, Wis. - Nicole Buntgen
