Westlake Ace Hardware Moving to Westgate This Summer

Westlake Ace Hardware will move later this summer from 8425 West Center Road to 3401 South 84th Street. Renovations are under way. The future space is on the north side of Westgate Plaza shopping center and was previously occupied by Tom Kelly’s Bowling Pro Shop and a bakery. Until the new location is ready, the hardware retailer will operate out of its current space.

The Beautique Opening June 28 at 121st & Pacific

The Beautique will hold its grand opening June 28 at 12115 Pacific Street. Owner Ashley Anderson is renovating a former podiatrist space. The salon and boutique offers curated retail, handmade goods and beauty services in a “whimsical wonderland” setting. The first 25 customers will receive a goodie bag. – Nicole Buntgen

Smart Gen Society Merges with Lutheran Family Services

Smart Gen Society, a nonprofit focused on improving digital wellness for youth and seniors, is merging with Lutheran Family Services. The move will see Smart Gen Society keep its name and services, but join forces with Lutheran Family Services’ programming that ranges from foster care to mental health therapy and more. – Mark Champion

Flora Cafe Bringing Mexican Brunch to Downtown Omaha

Flora Cafe, a new concept from the owners of Sam’s Leon Mexican Food, is set to open soon at 1009 Farnam Street near Gene Leahy Mall. The exterior signage was just installed this week. Taking over the former Matsu Sushi space, the restaurant will serve authentic Mexican brunch and feature an outdoor patio. – Nicole Buntgen

Ashland Brewing Company Opens for Business

Ashland Brewing Company opened for business yesterday at 810 South 9th Avenue in Ashland. That’s on the southwest corner of Highways 6 & 66. The 10,600 sq. ft. brew pub has four pickleball courts, a rooftop deck and outdoor seating around fire pits. The locally owned restaurant is part of the 4.3-acre Whitetail development.

Improvements Planned at 30th & Q in South O

The City of Omaha and Canopy South are planning multimodal infrastructure at 30th & Q Street as part of a redevelopment project. Canopy South is redeveloping the adjacent Southside Terrace public housing neighborhood. The 350 current units will be replaced with 577 new apartments and townhomes plus community and commercial space. The city will build new pedestrian lights and a pedestrian/bike path on 30th Street as well as a multimodal path, roundabouts, pedestrian islands and raised medians on Q Street. The $9.2 million project will be complete by 2027. – Isaiah Ang

7 Brew Coffee Plans Omaha-Area Locations

7 Brew Coffee is coming to the metro area. The first Omaha location will be in a to-be-constructed building at 182nd & West Maple Road next to an under-construction Chase Bank branch, according to ACCESS Commercial. A Fremont location is close to opening. A Council Bluffs location is slated for a former U.S. Bank space on Broadway. Based in Fayetteville, Ark., 7 Brew Coffee has more than 400 drive-thru locations including Nebraska shops in Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk and North Platte.

The Fifth Taste Food Truck Launching Soon in Omaha

The Fifth Taste by Chef Gerald, an Asian fusion food truck, will soon debut in Omaha. Inspired by umami—the “fifth taste”—the concept will offer a rotating menu of grilled meats, vegetables and global sauces. – Nicole Buntgen

Sports Card Trading Show Supports Local Nonprofit

On Deck Housing, a nonprofit that builds affordable housing in Omaha, capitalized on College World Series crowds to raise funds with its first-ever sports trading card show on June 16. Visitors could buy, sell and trade cards of all kinds, with proceeds going to On Deck Housing. The real home run: A Tom Brady rookie card that went for $20,000. – Mark Champion

Santiago’s Joins Blue Sky Bar & Patio

Santiago’s Mexican Food soft opened June 16 at Blue Sky Bar & Patio at 10730 Pacific Street. The family-owned food truck, which launched in 2022 near 36th & Jefferson Street, is now operating for events only while settling into Blue Sky’s kitchen. Full truck service is expected to resume once the new location is established. – Nicole Buntgen

Circo Now Serving Lunch in West Omaha

Circo, an Italian-inspired restaurant and wine bar at 19102 Q Street, is now open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by regular dinner service. The locally owned spot opened in 2023 and serves dishes like “circ-os,” cacio e pepe and duck confit. – Nicole Buntgen

City Provides Bike Racks to Local Property Owners

The City of Omaha has a limited amount of annual funding to supply bicycle racks to local property owners in the city limits. The city will provide and install the rack for free if it is to be located on public property (e.g. in the public right-of-way/sidewalk). The  city cannot install racks on private property, but it will supply the rack for free in some cases if the property owner agrees to install it. Racks will be inverted “U” racks. Mai Thai Aksarben Restaurant Switching Ownership

Mai Thai Omaha in Aksarben Village is switching ownership. The Thai restaurant, located at 2279 south 67th Street, is temporarily closed. The new ownership plans to renovate the space and reopen for business in August, according to Tom Millie of The Auction Mill.

HGTV Stars Consider Omaha for Housing Project

After coming to Omaha for the Reignite2Unite Development Symposium, the Downing Brothers – twins, firefighters and community-centric property developers featured on HGTV’s “Double Down” – said they plan to return to Omaha and collaborate with the Omaha Municipal Land Bank on a still-to-be-determined affordable housing project. – Mark Champion

Vetter Health Plans to Expand Omaha Headquarters

Vetter Health Services is expanding its corporate office. The company is planning to build a second building at 20220 Harney Street. The expansion consists of a 2-story, 17,000 sq. ft. building that will accommodate up to 40 new employees. Vetter Health Services manages 35 Vetter Senior Living locations. Outside of Nebraska, Vetter Health Services manages a senior living facility in Springfield, Mo. and Lander, Wyo. The company currently has more than 3,500 employees. – Isaiah Ang

City Selling Rec Building to Non-Profits

The City of Omaha is selling a small recreational building at 3802 North 24th Street on the northwest corner of 24th & Manderson Street. The 576 sq. ft. building would be renovated for co-officing space for three organizations that promote and maintain urban farms and seek to address food insecurity: Black Chick Farm, Omaha Sunflower Cooperative and Healing Roots African Diaspora Healing Roots Garden. Planning documents indicate that the organizations will also provide urban farm training, process seeds and hold neighborhood farmers’ markets. – Isaiah Ang

Crossroads Groundbreaking Scheduled for Monday

Woodbury Corp. will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Monday, June 16th at 2 p.m. for Gamescape by Cinemak, an entertainment venue that will be the first occupant of the new Crossroads development at 72nd & Dodge Street. The Crossroads’ new logo and branding will be unveiled at during the event.

Mazza Middle Eastern Cuisine Opening in Midtown Crossing

Mazza Middle Eastern Cuisine will soft-open June 13-14 at 5 p.m. in the former Sofra Kitchen space at 220 South 31st Avenue. The new Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant will offer 50% off its opening menu, including items like chicken and steak kebabs and falafel. – Nicole Buntgen

BT Party Cove Closes Shortly After Opening in Springfield

BT Party Cove, a private event venue in downtown Springfield, unexpectedly closed just days after its June 6 opening. The announcement was made on June 11 on the business’s official Facebook page. The venue operated at 166 South 2nd Street. – Nicole Buntgen

Commemorative Union Pacific Locomotive on Display in Omaha

Union Pacific’s newest commemorative locomotive is on display in North Downtown Omaha. The Lincoln Locomotive, #1616, honors Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. It’s on display during the College World Series through June 22nd at Union Pacific’s Home Plate just outside Charles Schwab Field. President Lincoln founded Union Pacific in 1862 when he signed the Pacific Railway Act, approving construction of the transcontinental railroad.

Unique Dental Practice to Focus on Uninsured Patients

Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns, a dental practice designed for uninsured patients, is opening July 14 northeast of 72nd & Grover Street. The practice only offers crowns, veneers, bridges, inlays and onlays. Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns will be on the second floor of the newly expanded New Image Dentistry building. Both practices are owned by four dentists who are all part of the family – Dr. Bernie Dudzinski and his three sons.

Qdoba Plans to Open Elkhorn-Area Location July 7

Qdoba Mexican Eats plans to open its Elkhorn-area location July 7th in the former Oklahoma Joe’s barbeque space at 1405 South 204th Street. Oklahoma Joe’s closed the restaurant several months ago but continues to operate a store at Aksarben Village. Qdoba has 10 existing Omaha-area locations.

Leela & Lavender Opening in Regency Shopping Mall

Leela & Lavender, a women’s fashion boutique, plans to open in mid-July at Regency Shopping Mall. The 3,995 sq. ft. store will occupy the former White House Black Market space next to Lululemon and across from Anthropologie. Based in Fargo, N.D., Leela & Lavender has six existing locations in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Michaels Buys JOANN Brands After Nationwide Closures

Michaels has acquired JOANN’s private-label brands and intellectual property following the closure of all JOANN stores, including its Omaha location on West Center Road. The 600-plus products—like fabrics, sewing machines and yarn—will appear in Michaels stores and online later this year. - Nicole Buntgen

State of Nebraska Lists Downtown Omaha Office Building For Sale

The State Office Building at 1313 Farnam Street is officially for sale. CBRE listed the property and is seeking potential buyers. In May, Nebraska Examiner reported that the Nebraska Department of Administrative Services was considering selling the property for potential redevelopment. The department acknowledged that it is in an area of high interest along the future streetcar route adjacent to Gene Leahy Mall. The 180,000 sq. ft. building comes with 400-space parking garage just south, across Harney Street. - Isaiah Ang

Primary Coffee Co. Opening Next to Reality Church

Primary Coffee Co. will soft open June 10 at 10695 Portal Road, next to Reality Church, which launched the concept. The independently-run shop serves coffee exclusively from local roaster Archetype Coffee. A grand opening is set for June 17, with half-priced drinks offered both weeks. - Nicole Buntgen

Bora Bora Juice Opening First Midwestern Location in Omaha

Bora Bora Juice plans to open its first Nebraska franchise – and one of the first in America – June 17th at 13110 Birch Drive #140. That’s in Eagle Run Plaza southeast of 132nd & West Maple Road. The quick-serve restaurant serves juice, smoothies, coffee, waffles and crepes. Founded in Kuwait, most Bora Bora Juice locations are in the Middle East. Roll-Em-Up Taquitos Opening First Nebraska Location in La Vista

Roll-Em-Up Taquitos will open its first Nebraska or Iowa location at 12448 Southport Parkway in La Vista, between Charred Burger and Dirty Dough. The California-based franchise, launched in 2019, serves street-style taquitos, taco burgers, churro donuts and street corn. - Nicole Buntgen

Heritage Omaha Studying Potential Public Market Near The RiverFront

Heritage Omaha is collaborating with Project for Public Spaces to study the potential for a year-round, public market at The Riverfront. Public markets provide space for community building, entrepreneurship and for residents to access fresh produce and locally produced food, goods and art. Heritage Omaha is a local non-profit that spurred the development of the Riverfront Parks, Kiewit Luminarium, Central Public Library and other venues. Project for Public Spaces is a non-profit that helps communities plan and design public spaces. Heritage is gathering public input at the project's website, www.omahariverfrontmarket.org.

City of Omaha Upgrades Two South Side Parks

The City of Omaha is improving two parks south of downtown Omaha. The City recently completed Carlentini Plaza at Dahlman Park in the Little Italy neighborhood. The plaza is named after Omaha’s sister city in Italy. Additionally, last week, the City Council approved a $255,000 contract to demolish and rebuild the park’s playground, basketball court and sand volleyball court. Lynch Park, near 20th & Center Street, is undergoing a $2.5 million renovation. Part of that project includes a skate park, which opened Memorial Day weekend. - Isaiah Ang

Sephora Opening at One Pacific Place

Sephora, a national make-up and beauty store, is renovating the former Eddie Bauer space at One Pacific Place. The exterior signage was just installed and grand opening is scheduled for June 13. The 5,300 sq. ft. standalone store will be the second of its kind in Omaha – other stores are located within Kohl’s department stores. Sephora’s other standalone store is at Village Pointe.

Sherwin Williams Plans Elkhorn-Area Store

Sherwin Williams is adding a paint store in the Elkhorn area at 606 North 210th Street. Located just south of the Union Bank and Trust Sports Complex, it will be Sherwin Williams’ 10th Omaha location. - Isaiah Ang

Gen Z Becomes Top Restaurant-Going Demographic

Gen Z has surpassed millennials as the most frequent restaurant-goers in the United States, according to a new Technomic report. Although they make up just 20 percent of the adult population, their strong digital habits and preference for creative beverage programs are driving the shift. Frozen Custard Shop Opens in La Vista

Sprinkle Joy has opened at 9821 Giles Road in La Vista. The locally owned custard shop donates 5 percent of all sales to rotating charities each month. Sprinkle Joy shares its space with Elegant Edge Events catering company.

Godfather’s Plans to Build in Coventry Development

Godfather’s Pizza plans to build a restaurant in the Coventry neighborhood at 20462 R Street, southwest of 204th & Q Street. The 2,690 sq. ft. restaurant space will have interior improvements worth $600,000, according to the building permit. – Isaiah Ang

Updates from Omaha Streetcar Authority

The Omaha Streetcar Authority held a special meeting May 23 to approve a contract to purchase $205,461 in specialty rail to be used for transitions and bridge crossing along the route. The authority became aware that the last domestic mill that produces the rail will shut its doors in 30-45 days. The rail is usually a long-lead-time item, but because the mill is clearing out remaining inventory, the authority can procure the rail earlier and at an advantageous price. The authority also held its regular meeting on May 12, where they heard reports of modest delays in the utility work. The Harney Street replacement bridge is on schedule for completion in 2025. – Isaiah Ang

Chipotle Opens in La Vista Southport Area

Chipotle Mexican Grill has officially opened at 12251 McDermott Plaza in La Vista’s Southport East development near Hampton Inn and Amigos/Kings Classic. The fast-casual chain now has 13 metro locations across Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista and Elkhorn. - Nicole Buntgen

Creighton Remodeling Satellite Office at Highlander Accelerator

Creighton University plans to remodel a satellite office at the Highlander Accelerator, a mixed-use building that offers business incubation and community development spaces. The remodel provides two new offices and a conference room and will be an extension of the university’s The Educational Opportunity Center, a federally funded program aimed at helping adults who are first-generation college students or low-income, access education, career resources and financial literacy. - Isaiah Ang

Yoga Studio Opens in Countryside Village

Moon Dance Yoga Co. recently opened at Countryside Village near 87th & Pacific Street. Locally owned by Mandee Peterson, the boutique space offers a variety of yoga styles—including Vinyasa, Kundalini, Strength, Yin and Nidra—as well as holistic Ayurvedic wellness services.
