City Plans to Repair Bob Kerrey Bridge Fountain
The Omaha City Council approved the purchase of $127,977 in materials and equipment to repair the Bob Kerrey Bridge Plaza Fountain, adjacent to the bridge on the Nebraska side. The materials and equipment will be purchased from Crystal Fountain, Inc., which provided the original infrastructure. The Parks and Recreation department will make the necessary repairs to the fountain. – Isaiah Ang
New Convenience Store Planned for 40th & Ames
A neighborhood convenience store is planned for the commercial district at 40th & Ames Avenue. Tariq Ali plans to open NYC Deli & Liquor at 4004 Ames Avenue later this year. In addition to packaged food and alcoholic beverages, the business will sell fresh and prepared foods, including sandwiches and grilled items. Additionally, there will be a juice and smoothie bar. – Isaiah Ang
Eppley Breaks All-Time Monthly Passenger Record in June
Eppley Airfield celebrated a historic milestone in June. The airport recorded 524,331 passengers last month, a new all-time monthly record. The existing monthly record was 514,758 passengers in June of 2024. Year-to-date passenger traffic is down three percent from last year. – Isaiah Ang
Tavern 180 Closes Lincoln Location
Tavern 180, a modern American restaurant and bar that originated in Omaha, closed its Lincoln location on July 29 after six years in business. The closure was announced via Facebook. The original Omaha location near 180th & Dodge remains open. The Lincoln closure leaves the Omaha restaurant as the brand’s only remaining location. – Nicole Buntgen
The Hampton Inn & Suites Opens Near Med Center
The Hampton Inn & Suites Omaha UN Medical Center Area is now open at 4401 Douglas Street. The 6-story hotel has 96 rooms and is located a block north of Nebraska Medicine’s planned $2.2 billion hospital. Managed by MH Hospitality, the hotel offers self-contained parking and an available retail space. Amenities include contemporary accommodations, flexible event spaces, complimentary breakfast and a fitness center.
Iowa Coffee Chain Plans Second West Omaha Store
Hyper Energy Bar, a beverage chain from Urbandale, Iowa, is planning to open two locations in west Omaha. The first one, a 900 sq. ft. building on the southwest corner of 180th & West Maple Road, is now under construction. The second will be a double-drive-thru building southeast of 180th & Burke Street west of Village Pointe. Construction will start in early October with opening planned for January. Hyper Energy currently has seven locations – six in the Des Moines, Iowa, metro area and one in Iowa City.
Chicken N Pickle Cancels Omaha Location Plans
Chicken N Pickle, a family-friendly entertainment complex, will no longer open its first Nebraska location at Tranquility Commons near 120th & Fort Street. Originally set to open this year, the Kansas City-based company announced a “strategic growth shift” in May to focus on its 13 existing locations across seven states. – Nicole Buntgen
Kia Dealership Coming to Village Pointe West
H&H Kia has broken ground for a new car dealership on 9.77 acres between Walgreens and Core Bank southeast of 180th & Burke Street in Village Pointe West. The Kia dealership will include sales and service with enough space for 600 cars on site. Construction should be completed at the end of 2026. Kia has a current dealership in Papillion northeast of Highways 50 & 370.
Jensen Tire Building Store Near 204th & Q
Jensen Tire & Auto has started construction on a new store on the southwest corner of 204th & N Street. The site is in front of a planned $40 million, 125,000 sq. ft. Baker’s Marketplace grocery store. Just to the north of the Jensen tire site, FNB0 has opened an ATM on a pad site that will eventually have a branch office. Just north of that is a brand-new Scooter’s Coffee. Jensen Tire has 22 existing locations.
Steelhouse Omaha Adding Outdoor Venue
Steelhouse Omaha plans to convert its existing outdoor space into an outdoor venue. Currently, the performance venue has concrete patio on the southwest corner of the building. Based on a building permit, the $92,000 project consists of three decks, two shipping containers, outdoor seating, turf and landscaping. – Isaiah Ang
7 Brew Coffee Moving Forward in Council Bluffs
As previously reported, Arkansas-based coffee chain, 7 Brew Coffee, is entering the market with locations in Fremont, Omaha (182nd & West Maple Road) and Council Bluffs. Next week, the Council Bluffs City Council will review a resolution for the development plan of the location at 2901 West Broadway, formally a U.S. Bank location. The existing bank building will be demolished. Plans show a coffee kiosk building with drive-thru and a separate storage and cooling building. The store will be drive-thru only. – Isaiah Ang
Riddle’s Jewelry Plans Two Additional Omaha Stores
Riddle’s Jewelry is planning to open two additional Omaha area locations by the end of this year. The Rapid City, S.D.-based retailer has more than 60 stores in 10 states. The current Westroads Mall location will remain open. A second location at Shadow Lake Towne Center is anticipated to open soon after Labor Day across from Victoria’s Secret, adjacent to the amphitheater. The third location will be at Village Pointe, next to Claire’s, and is anticipated to open by November. – Isaiah Ang
Senior Living Building Going Up in Far Southwest Omaha
A 55+ senior living project is planned for a 2.85-acre lot southwest of 192nd & Adams Street in the Falling Waters subdivision. According to city council documents, the project will consist of an 88-unit apartment building. The city council is currently reviewing an amendment to the mixed-use district development agreement to allow the project to reduce the required parking space from two spaces per unit to one space per unit. The planning department recommends approval. – Isaiah Ang
Qdoba Opens Elkhorn Area Location
Qdoba Mexican Eats opened its new Elkhorn-area store yesterday in the former Oklahoma Joe’s barbeque space at 1405 South 204th Street. Oklahoma Joe’s closed the restaurant several months ago but continues to operate a store at Aksarben Village. Qdoba now has 11 Omaha-area locations.
Council Bluffs Moves Forward with East Side Housing Development
Council Bluffs continues to make progress on the East Manawa Phase 1 project. This phase includes 40 single-family homes for households making 80 percent or less of the area median income. Turn the Paige Homes is the developer. The city council will review a resolution to approve Sudbeck Homes as the builder for Phase 1. There were seven submittals in response to the Request for Proposals. Sudbeck Homes was chosen based on its experience building single-family home projects at scale and its ability to complete the project within the city’s stated guidelines. – Isaiah Ang
Lemon Tree Cafe Reopens in Ralston
Lemon Tree Cafe has reopened at 7614 Main Street in Ralston following a fire on March 6. The family-owned, breakfast-and-brunch spot has added menu items. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Nicole Buntgen
Union Pacific Confirms Merger Talks with Norfolk Southern
Union Pacific today confirmed it is in advanced discussions with Norfolk Southern Railway regarding a merger. “There can be no assurances as to whether an agreement for a transaction will be reached or as to the terms of any such transaction,” a UP press release stated. Omaha-based Union Pacific has a market value of $140 billion, while Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern is valued at $60 billion. If the deal survives regulatory scrutiny, it would create the first coast-to-coast railroad in U.S. history.
OPPD Customers Pay 27.4 Percent Below National Average
Omaha Public Power District reported that its customers pay some of the lowest electrical rates in the country. Based on 2023 data, customers pay 15.8 percent below the regional average and 27.4 percent below the national average. For residential customers, rates were 14 percent below the regional and 24.9 percent below national. Industrial users paid 11.6 percent below the regional and 13.6 percent below the national average. Commercial rates were particularly low with rate below 22.2 percent of the regional and 32.9 percent of the national average. – Isaiah Ang
Mixed-Income Housing Development Planned Near 680 & Maple
Front Porch Investments and New Visions Homeless Services announced a Request-for-Proposals from “qualified and mission-aligned real estate developers” to lead the development of a community-centered, affordable or mixed-income housing project on a currently vacant 4.72-acre site located south of 96th & Cady Avenue. NVHS is in the early stages of developing 46 units of permanent supportive housing for senior veterans on the parcel to the north of this site. – Mark Champion
Poarch Chiropractic Plans Ribbon Cutting
Poarch Chiropractic will host a ribbon cutting August 7 at its new clinic at 10208 South 168th Avenue near 168th & Cornhusker Road. The practice offers holistic care including manual and extremity adjustments, activator methods, needle-less acupuncture and digital X-rays. – Nicole Buntgen

Fun-Plex Waterpark & Rides Opens Two New Attractions
Fun-Plex Waterpark & Rides has opened two additional attractions. Shipwreck Chutes are 35-foot-tall, twin water slides that pump 750 gallons of water per minute. The Caribbean-themed slides create unpredictable moments of acceleration and weightlessness before an exhilarating drop into the splash pool below. The Sprayway is a splash pad with 31 spraying elements, including ground spouts, spray trees and arched water features. Fun-Plex is located at 7003 Q Street.
Rally Coffee Closes Gretna Location
Rally Coffee Co. closed its Gretna location at 17878 Oakmont Drive on July 15. The shop opened in February just northeast of 180th & Highway 370 in the same retail strip as Net Par. Frontier Airlines Launching Nonstop Flights from Omaha to Atlanta This Fall
Frontier Airlines plans to launch nonstop flights from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport this fall. The nonstop service will operate twice per week beginning October 10. With the new route, Frontier will join Delta Airlines, which offers five nonstops per day from Omaha to Atlanta. Currently, Frontier offers nonstops from Omaha to Denver (year-round) and Orlando (seasonal).
Chateau Vin Wine & Spirit Bar Opening at Midtown Crossing
Chateau Vin Wine & Spirit Bar is planning a grand opening in late August at 220 South 31st Avenue, Unit 3108, in Midtown Crossing. The locally owned business will offer more than 100 wines plus “artisanal spirits, innovative cocktails and global flavors.” Chateau Vin will feature contemporary décor, cozy seating areas and an outdoor patio.
Omaha Among Most Affordable Cities for Low-Income Residents
City Nerd, a 357,000-subscriber YouTube channel, ranked Omaha as the fourth most affordable city for low-income residents. Host Ray Delahanty analyzed the central cities in every metro area over 1 million and determined the housing cost burden for a person earning 25 percent of a city’s median income, while renting a property at 25 percent of a city’s median rental rate. Omaha’s 25-percentile income is $39,103, with a 25th-percentile rent of $1,147 for a housing burden of 35 percent. The only major cities more affordable than Omaha are Raleigh, Charlotte and Fort Worth.
VASA Fitness to Open in Bellevue
VASA Fitness will soon open at 909 Fort Crook Road in the former No Frills space near Southroads Mall in Bellevue. The Utah-based gym chain opened its first Nebraska locations in 2024, including one at 14445 West Center Road in Omaha and another at 4615 Vine Street in Lincoln. - Nicole Buntgen
VA Puts Omaha in the Queue for New Hospital
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has added Omaha’s proposed VA hospital project to its Five-Year Development plan. “The Omaha VA hospital will turn 75 years old this year, and it’s clear it must be replaced to meet the standard of care our veterans need and deserve,” said Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.). The Five-Year Plan is a key step before a new hospital is built. Other cities making list were Atlanta; Manchester, N.H.; New York City; Nashville; Philadelphia; Raleigh-Durham; and Washington, D.C.
Membership-Based Golf Business Coming to Elkhorn
According to a building permit, a GolfTRK location will open in Elkhorn at 606 North 210th Street. The space is inside a recently completed commercial building just north of West Dodge Road. GolfTRK will occupy 3,100 sq. ft. GolfTRK offers a premier indoor golf facility with Trackman and Puttview bays, available only to paid members. Non-members are able to book golf lessons and custom club fittings. Based in Kansas City, GolfTRK currently has two locations in Overland Park and Lenexa, Kan. - Isaiah Ang
Flora Café Opens Along Gene Leahy Mall
Flora Café, a Mexican brunch restaurant, opened last week at 1009 Farnam Street along the south side of Gene Leahy Hall. Taking over the former Matsu Sushi space, the restaurant serves authentic Mexican brunch and features an outdoor patio. Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
Event Venue Plans to Open in Former Urban Outfitters Space
An event venue known as “The Scene” is planning to open this fall in the former Urban Outfitters location at 745 North 14th Street in the Builder’s District. The 2-story, 8,500 sq. ft. North Downtown space is between Rally Coffee and Slowdown live music venue. Urban Outfitters moved to 17255 Davenport Street in Village Pointe five years ago, leaving the space vacant ever since.
Pho Noodle Restaurant Coming to Whispering Ridge
A pho noodle restaurant is planned for a retail bay in the Whispering Ridge shopping center along West Maple Road. The restaurant will be located at 17205 Evans Street in a 2,000 sq. ft. space, according to a building permit for initial build out. - Isaiah Ang
Westlake Ace Hardware Makes the Move This Monday
Westlake Ace Hardware will open its relocated store Monday, July 21st in Westgate Plaza southeast of 84th & Hascall Street. The hardware store will be moving from its current space at 8425 West Center Road in Canfield’s Plaza. The current store will close permanently on Sunday. Westlake Ace Hardware’s new space was previously occupied by Tom Kelly’s Bowling Pro shop, a bakery and a barber shop. The move will allow more store space and more outdoor display space for lawn and garden merchandise.
Regional Rural Economy Shows Signs of Life
Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index climbed above the 50.0 growth neutral reading in July, marking the second time since July 2023 that the index has moved above growth neutral for two straight months, according to the monthly survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a 10-state region dependent on agriculture and/or energy. The region’s overall reading for July slipped to 50.6 from June’s 51.9.
Dayspring Bank Plans Ribbon Cutting for Gretna Branch
Dayspring Bank plans to hold a ribbon cutting Tuesday, August 5 at 3:30 p.m. for its recently opened Gretna branch at 11910 Standing Stone Drive. Based in Gothenburg, Neb., Dayspring Bank was known as First State Bank until 2023. In addition to Gretna, the bank has locations in Gothenburg, Mullen, North Platte, Papillion, Ralston and Wallace, Nebraska.
Voodoo Taco Closes Farnam Street Location
Voodoo Taco has closed its location at 2502 Farnam Street. The local taco restaurant still operates stores in Aksarben Village (near 67th & Center Street), the Old Market (11th & Harney Street) and Gretna (Nebraska Crossing). - Nicole Buntgen
Development Planned at 39th & Ames Avenue
Spencer Management plans to renovate a commercial building on the northeast corner of 39th & Ames Avenue. Built in 1962, the 3,652 sq. ft. building had been used as a storage facility. Spencer management plans to use a portion of the building for an auto and equipment service shop. The site will also provide commercial space for emerging businesses to lease. The developer is seeking a $90,000 TIF loan to help fund the $845,000 project. Construction will begin this summer and be complete by summer 2026. - Isaiah Ang
Child Saving Institute Announced Completed Project
Earlier this month, the Child Saving Institute announced the completion of their new entrance and the expanded Youth Shelter and Behavioral Health Center. The entrance is moving from Dodge to Douglas Street and will be open to the public starting July 21. The full capital project will be completed later this year. - Mark Champion
Bernie’s Original Pizza Parlor Closes in Millard
Bernie’s Original Pizza Parlor at 13522 Cottner Street has permanently closed as of July 16 due to rising rent and revenue challenges, according to a statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The family-owned pizzeria reopened in 2019 near its original 136th & Q location, which operated from 1970 to 2015 under the name Bernie’s Pizza. - Nicole Buntgen
Centris Federal Credit Union Breaks Ground on Gretna Branch
Centris Federal Credit Union broke ground today on a full‐service branch on the northwest corner of 192nd & Highway 370 in Gretna. The site is part of Gretna Landing, a mixed-use development that includes retail buildings, an apartment complex, indoor sports facilities and a planned health center. The building is slated to open in late 2026. Centris has 14 existing branches in Omaha, Grand Island, North Platte and Council Bluffs.
Stella’s Ice Cream Now Open in Elkhorn
Stella’s Ice Cream is now open at 4002 North 203rd Street in Elkhorn near Jimmy John’s and Little Caesars. The Idaho-based chain offers ice cream, baked goods, floats and gluten- and dairy-free options. A grand opening event is set for July 19. - Nicole Buntgen
