Panda Express Plans to Build at 204th & N Street
Panda Express plans to open a location near 204th & N Street. The chain filed for a building permit at 4815 South 205 Street. The building will be approximately 2,700 sq. ft. and include a drive-thru. – Isaiah Ang
Bad Seed Coffee Closing Both Locations
After more than 10 years in business, Bad Seed Coffee & Supply will close its shops at 5015 Dodge Street and 2452 Harney Street on September 13 or while supplies last. The business cited financial challenges from opening a second location, construction near its first site and personal difficulties as reasons for the closure. – Nicole Buntgen
New Apartment Units in Omaha Up 79 Percent
RentCafe expects another robust year of apartment construction with more than 500,000 new units anticipated to open nationwide by year’s end. Over the past 10 years, apartment openings averaged 439,000 per year, with a crest of 640,000 openings in 2024. RentCafe also tracked year-over-year increases in apartment openings. Notably, Omaha has the 7th highest year-over-year increase in openings expected in 2025 compared to 2024. Omaha’s expected 3,335 new openings in 2025 is 79% more than openings in 2024. – Isaiah Ang
Locally Owned Liquor Store Coming to Blackstone District
Shoeman’s Liquor & More plans to open in the Blackstone District inside the recently completed 37 West Farnam Building. The space is just west of Revival House along the south side of Farnam Street. The wine, beer and spirits store will be locally owned by Chad Shoeman, who also has the Red Lion Lounge a block to the west. Interior build-out is underway.
Big Grove Taphouse Opening Delayed After License Denial
Big Grove Brewery’s taphouse in the Catalyst building has delayed opening after the Nebraska Liquor Commission denied its craft brewer’s license, an exemption typically reserved for local breweries. Regulators said the denial came because Big Grove already manufactures alcohol and tried to use a separate entity to qualify. The Iowa-based brewery is now seeking a liquor manufacturer’s license, which would allow it to open but limit offerings to its own beer. – Nicole Buntgen
National Tire Store Chain Entering Omaha Market
Les Schwab Tire Center plans to open its first Omaha-area location at 121 Scott Road in Papillion’s Tower District, just north of 84th & Highway 370. According to a Papillion city building permit, the 2-story building will have seven service bays. Based in Bend, Ore., Les Schwab Tire has nearly 600 stores in 15 states mostly in the western part of the country. The only existing Nebraska store is in North Platte.
Kros Strain Releases Official Husker Beer
La Vista-based Kros Strain Brewing Company has partnered with Nebraska Athletics to launch Cornhusker Crusher, “the official beer of the Huskers.” The wheat ale with a light citrus flavor will be available year-round at the brewery’s La Vista and downtown Omaha taprooms and at Memorial Stadium during football games. – Nicole Buntgen
Centris Credit Union Plans Ribbon-Cutting for Ames Branch
Centris Federal Credit Union will hold a ribbon cutting Wednesday, September 17 at 8:15 a.m. for its latest location at 6572 Ames Avenue. The new branch office is on the site of a former restaurant building which was demolished. Centris has 14 offices in the Omaha metro area as well as Grand Island and North Platte, Neb.
Japanese Steakhouse Breaks Ground Near 180th & Maple
A groundbreaking ceremony took place last week for Kyoto Sushi & Hibachi, a Japanese steakhouse planned for 18118 Evans Street. The 1.3-acre site is southwest of 180th & West Maple Road. The 7,000 sq. ft. restaurant will occupy part of a 12,558 sq. ft. retail building expected to be complete sometime next year. Kyoto’s owners are Michael and Amy Chen, who also own Osaka Steakhouse & Sushi Bar at 12746 Westport Parkway in La Vista.
Nebraska Medicine Named to Forbes Best-in-State Employer List
For the seventh year in a row, Forbes has named Nebraska Medicine to its list of America’s Best-in-State Employers. Forbes ranked Nebraska Medicine as the number-one health care employer in the state of Nebraska and the number-two overall employer.
Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns Opens Practice in Omaha
Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns has opened at 7016 Grover Street just north of 72nd & Interstate 80. The practice provides same-day crowns, veneers, inlays/onlays, implant crowns and bridges—all made through advanced digital imaging and in-house milling. Upside does not offer cleanings or routine dental care, instead focusing solely on restorative procedures.
The Still Plans to Open West Omaha Store This Week
The Still, a longtime wine and spirits store in Lincoln, is expanding to west Omaha. Located at 204th & V Street in the Coventry development, the new store is scheduled to open August 28. Both the store and the recently completed building are owned by Omaha-based Gottsch Enterprises.
Millard Activity Center Gets Naming Rights Sponsor
Millard Public Schools Foundation has announced a naming rights partnership with Iowa-based GreenState Credit Union for an activity center under construction near 210th & Q Street. The 85,000 sq. ft., privately funded facility will be known as GreenState Millard Activity Center. Opening is scheduled for fall 2026. GreenState was founded in 1938 and was previously known as University of Iowa Community Credit Union. Its first Nebraska location opened recently at 181st & West Maple Road.
Signage Installed at Future Hawaiian Bros Location
Crews are installing signage today at a future Hawaiian Bros Island Grill restaurant, which is going into the former Boston Market building at 704 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. Hawaiian Bros’ first Nebraska location opened a year and a half ago near Interstate 80 & Highway 370 in Gretna. The Kansas City-based restaurant chain has 65 locations in 12 states.
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings Coming to The Yard
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings will open at 812 North 14th Street in the former Session Room space on the southeast corner of the first floor at 1415 @ The Yard Apartments, according to Oak Investment Real Estate. The 3,600 sq. ft. restaurant has not announced an opening date. – Nicole Buntgen
Papio-Missouri NRD Selling Surplus Properties in North O
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District is selling surplus properties in north Omaha totaling 3.6 acres to inCommon Housing Development for $53,837. The three parcels are located near Military Avenue & Hamilton Street next to the under-construction Beltline trailhead. inCommon plans to convert the vacant properties into rental and for-sale housing and public green space. inCommon is currently developing a residential project at Park & Poppleton avenues. – Isaiah Ang
Airline Plastics Renovates Corporate Office
Airlite Plastics is renovating its corporate headquarters at 6110 Abbott Drive near Eppley Airfield. According to a building permit application, Airlite plans to invest $1 million to create new divisions and office space in the building. Airlite was founded in Omaha and has more than 1,100 employees in six North American locations. It manufactures prepackaged food containers. – Isaiah Ang
Sugared Ledge Bakery Closing Elkhorn Location
Sugared Ledge Bakery will close its Elkhorn shop at 920 North 204th Avenue on August 24. The business, which temporarily closed in February for renovations, said it will not renew its lease due to space limitations but is seeking a larger location. – Nicole Buntgen
Teledyne Prepares for New Omaha Location
Teledyne CETAC Technologies is renovating a light industrial space at 11105 Mockingbird Drive. The location was previously occupied by Cybotic Health Technologies. Teledyne is headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and provides products and services for elemental analysis of samples ranging from drinking water to radioactive waste. Bowlero Rebrands Elkhorn Location as Lucky Strike
Bowlero has rebranded its Elkhorn bowling entertainment center at 20902 Cumberland Drive as Lucky Strike, following the Virginia-based brand’s 2023 acquisition. The company’s Council Bluffs location at 1900 Madison Avenue is also slated to rebrand as part of a two-year rollout. – Nicole Buntgen

Cracker Barrel Unveils New Logo
Cracker Barrel revealed a new text-only logo on August 21 removing the man-and-barrel image and the “Old Country Store” subtitle. Part of its “All the More” branding campaign, the update echoes the chain’s original 1969 logo before the barrel and man were added in 1977. Buffalo Wild Wings at 4287 South 144th Street in Southwestern Plaza is undergoing an extensive renovation. So far, the business has remained open during the project. Completion is scheduled for next month.
North Omaha Nonprofit Finds a New Home
YouTurn, a north Omaha nonprofit violence prevention organization, announced plans to move from 34th & Ames Avenue into a larger, 7,300 sq. ft. space near 32nd & Dodge Street. The move will make space for the planned North High School football stadium and upgrades to the Butler Gast YMCA. – Mark Champion
Infill Housing Project Planned for 56th & Frances Street
Sierra Homes has plans for an in-fill development at 56th & Frances Street. The City Council approved a planned unit redevelopment for the 13,000 sq. ft. vacant parcel. Plans show that the property will be subdivided into six lots each with 2-story, single-family houses with garages. Each home will be approximately 1,500 sq. ft. and have 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. – Isaiah Ang
Revival House Expanding to Legacy
Revival House will open a second Omaha location in January 2026 at 16939 Wright Street in the former Parliament Pub space the the Shoppes at Legacy. Creighton Welcomes Largest Freshman Class in History
Creighton University has welcomed 1,250 freshmen, its largest incoming class ever. Thirty-seven percent of them ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, and nearly 50 percent graduated with a 4.0 GPA or higher. The class is geographically diverse with 36 percent coming from more than 400 miles away. Nebraska is the most represented home state with 294 students, while Minnesota is second with 188. Other states sending more than 50 freshmen to Creighton this year include Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Hawaii.
Duchesne Academy Constructing $43 Million Athletic Complex
Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, a private, all-girls high school, is building an athletic complex on its Midtown campus near 36th & Burt Street. The state-of-the-art facility is tailored to serve female athletes and includes a competition gym holding 1,200 fans with an indoor track as well as a turf soccer field with a geothermal system installed below ground. Amenities include a locker room, weight room and commons area with a commercial-grade kitchen. Fundraising has surpassed 81 percent of the school’s $43 million goal.
Wick & Paper Studio Opens in Millwork Commons
Wick & Paper Studio has opened in a boutique space inside The Dizzy Mule building at 1252 Izard Plaza. The building is part of Millwork Commons, a burgeoning urban district north of Charles Schwab Field. Wick & Paper Studio is the shared brick-and-mortar home of Telle & Resa Candle Co. and J.Diane Creations. Telle & Resa sells handcrafted soy wax candles. J.Diane Creations provides creative services, including handmade greeting cards, custom art and planning for events.
VIP Lounge Reopens in New Location
VIP Lounge has reopened in its new space at 8505 Frederick Street in a space once occupied by Gaeta’s restaurant and For the Wild Birds store. VIP Lounge had operated at 9001 Arbor Street for 61 years.
Blood Bank Opens in Eagle Run
The Nebraska Community Blood Bank opened its Eagle Run Donor Center July 29th in Omaha near 132nd & Birch Street, accepting whole blood, plasma, double red cells and platelets. Executive Director Cheryl Warholoski described it as a vital resource for rapid response to hospital needs, especially amid a severe summer blood shortage.
Lincoln Developer Plans Apartment Project in Council Bluffs
The Council Bluffs Planning Board reviewed a plan from Lincoln-based Hoppe Development for a 2.54-acre site next to the First Avenue Trail bounded by 28th and 29th streets and 2nd Avenue. Hoppe plans to build an 89-unit, mixed-income, residential complex. The city had previously approved other proposals from Brinshore Development and White Lotus Group. In late 2024, Hoppe was chosen as the developer from the third Request for Proposal. Hoppe’s plan is named West End Roost and consists of eight buildings ranging from 4-plex buildings to a 3-story, 47-unit building. In addition to traditional residential units, Hoppe plans several live-work units in a building adjacent to the trail. – Isaiah Ang
Starbucks Opens in Papillion’s Tower District
Starbucks Coffee has opened a store in Papillion’s Tower District, a 120-acre, mixed-use project northwest of 84th & Highway 370 in Papillion. The Tower District will also be home to Panera Bread, Casey’s, Pinnacle Bank, AutoZone and GreenState Credit Union. The development gets its name for its proximity to Papillion’s iconic water tower.
OPPD Plans to Add 3,000 Megawatts of Additional Capacity
The Omaha Public Power District continues to expand its electrical power generation capacities to keep up with current and future growth. By the end of the decade, OPPD plans to add more than 3000 megawatts in additional generation while diversifying its energy portfolio. Earlier this summer, OPPD announced that the new Turtle Creek Station was officially operational. Located near 168th & Fairview Road in Sarpy County, the station currently has two dual-fuel combustion turbines, with a combined output of 450 megawatts. OPPD is adding a third turbine which is expected to be completed in 2027. – Isaiah Ang
Pa Más Kitchen Hosting Grand Re-Opening
Pa Más Kitchen at 220 South 31st Avenue in Midtown Crossing is holding a grand re-opening August 15-17 after a remodel. The restaurant reopened July 9 with brunch, extended hours and an evening bar. Habitat for Humanity Plans Council Bluffs Townhome Development
Habitat for Humanity is planning a 7-unit townhome development on a .6-acre site near downtown Council Bluffs. The property is located in the north half of the block bounded by 1st and Willow avenues and South 7th and 8th streets. Each 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom townhome will have a private garage with access from a public alley. - Isaiah Ang
Izzy’s Pizza Retires Mobile Pizza Bus
Izzy’s Pizza has officially retired its mobile pizza bus, which launched in Las Vegas in 2019 and moved to Omaha in 2022. The Detroit-style pizzeria will now focus solely on its brick-and-mortar location at 522 South 24th Street, open Wednesday through Saturday. - Nicole Buntgen
Southwest Airlines Adds Nonstop Flights from Omaha to NYC & Miami
Southwest Airlines announced that it will add nonstop flight service from Omaha’s Eppley Airfield to New York City LaGuardia and Miami International Airport. The New York service begins March 5, 2026, while the Miami route starts March 7. American and Delta already offer nonstops between Omaha and New York. American currently offers seasonal nonstops to Miami. Southwest is Eppley’s biggest carrier and currently offers nonstops to Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Tampa and Washington, D.C.
Omaha Housing Authority Plans to Renovate 13-Story Tower
The Omaha Housing Authority is planning major renovations to Pine Tower Apartments at 1500 Pine Street. Built in 1965, the 13-story apartment building has 144 units. According to a building permit, studio units will be converted to 1-bedroom apartments. Additionally, kitchens, bathrooms, finishes and common areas will be updated. Some mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades are planned. The project will cost $8.6 million. - Isaiah Ang
New Vegan Restaurant Coming to Blackstone District
Fifth House, a local vegan restaurant, plans to open soon in the former Get Real Sandwiches space at 3901 Farnam Street in the Blackstone District. The restaurant’s tagline is “the vegan joint of your dreams.”
