Masa Luna Tamaleria Opens in Little Bohemia
Masa Luna Tamaleria has opened in the former Muchacho’s space at 1258 South 13th Street in Little Bohemia. Masa Luna is limited to customers age 21 and over. The menu includes handmade masa for tamales and al pastor tacos from the trompo. Masa Luna also offers “a progressive bar program based on additive free, sustainable agave-based spirits.” The primary owners are Carlos Cuevas and Gillian Cromwell Cuevas. Co-owners are Noah and Katie Mock, who also own Nite Owl and Fizzy’s Fountain & Liquors.
Sinkhole Rising Starts Today
Work begins today to remediate a sinkhole on the west side of 16th Street between Farnam and Harney streets. The project will last through November. The sinkhole opened last January when a garbage truck fell into an underground void while turning into an alley. Remediating the sinkhole is more complicated than simply filling it. An exposed building foundation needs to be shored up, a sewer must be repaired, and Omaha Public Power District needs to fix a duct line.
Peregrine Hotel in Downtown Plans Two New Dining Concepts
The Peregrine Hotel at 18th & Douglas Street downtown plans to launch two dining concepts in late October. They include The Perch Rooftop, which will be open on top of the building year-round, and the Gilded Feather, a full-service restaurant.
La Plaza Fiesta Opens in Westwood Plaza
La Plaza Fiesta, a Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Mexican restaurant, has opened its first Omaha location at 12405 West Center Road in the former El Vallarta space at Westwood Plaza. Known for its margaritas and scratch-made menu, the restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. – Nicole Buntgen
MCC students to compete for International Space Station research opportunity
Up to 30 Metropolitan Community College students will have the opportunity to participate in the ultimate “distance learning project” this fall. Through a partnership with the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education, teams of MCC students will design and propose spaceflight experiments, with one MCC project selected for testing by astronauts on the International Space Station. Registration is open to all MCC students, including high school students participating in MCC dual enrollment programs.
Habitat for Humanity Plans to Build at 26th & Corby
Habitat for Humanity plans to build new housing on vacant lots near 26th Street and Corby Street in north Omaha directly east of the City of Omaha’s fleet maintenance facility. Plans call for 27 housing units, consisting of single-family attached and detached homes and townhomes. Building sized range from 1,000 sq. ft., 2-bedroom homes to 1,800 sq. ft., 4-bedrooms units. The for-sale homes will have an average appraised value of $230,000. Habitat for Humanity also applied for $1.7 million in TIF to support the $7 million project. Construction is set to begin this October and be completed by August 2026. – Isaiah Ang
Bergman Incentives Opens New Headquarters
Bergman Incentives will celebrate a ribbon cutting for its new headquarters at 9700 J Street on September 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. The 44,000 sq. ft. space will also house fulfillment and distribution functions. Bergman Incentives provides branded merchandise and promotional items. In addition to Omaha, the company operates in Kansas City, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City.
Combined Book Store & Tattoo Studio Opening Soon
Paper Crane Books & Tattoo plans to open Saturday, September 27 at 735 North 120th Street in the Skin Deep tattoo location. The business will be combined indie bookstore and licensed tattoo-and-piercing studio.
Hawaiian Bros Opens Monday in Miracle Hills
Hawaiian Bros will open its second Omaha restaurant Monday, September 8th at 704 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. The grand opening starts at 11 a.m., and the first 100 customers in line will receive a free t-shirt and a Hawaiian Bros gift card ranging from $25-$500 (with purchase). The local Bros franchises are owned by Dean Hodges of DKPM Investment Corp. Kansas City-based Hawaiian Bros is known for its island-inspired plate lunch, which offers chicken or pork, macaroni salad, a bed of steamed rice or vegetables and Dole Soft Serve for dessert.
Baby Bob Bridge Ribbon Cutting Takes Place Next Week
The City of Omaha will hold an official, ceremonial ribbon cutting event to celebrate the opening of the $7.5 million Baby Bob bridge on September 10 at 2 p.m. The 1,100-foot bridge has been functionally open for several months now and connects North Downtown to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.
Holy Name Housing Corporation to Build at 40th & Franklin
The Omaha Planning Department approved a preliminary plat for a 28-unit subdivision east of 40th & Franklin Street. Home Name Housing Corporation plans to build 28 two-bedroom townhomes on 2.8 acres of vacant land. One duplex is planned for a smaller lot off Decatur Street, while the other units will be in 3- and 4-unit buildings. The project is adjacent to the NRD Beltline Trail. – Isaiah Ang
bb.q Chicken Opens Second Omaha Location
bb.q Chicken has opened its second Omaha location at 1028 South 74th Plaza, next to Eileen’s Cookies. The Seoul, South Korea-based Korean fried chicken chain debuted its first Nebraska location in February 2024 at 2521 South 132nd Street. – Nicole Buntgen
Holy Grounds Coffeehouse & Gifts Opens in West Omaha
Holy Grounds Coffeehouse & Gifts opened on August 8 at 19405 Polk Street near 194th & Harrison. The faith-based coffee shop and gift store sources locally roasted coffee and offers café fare alongside a curated retail selection. – Nicole Buntgen
Lauritzen Gardens Conservatory Reopening After Renovation
Lauritzen Gardens announced that the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory will be reopening to the public on September 20 following a two-phase renovation, which upgraded the facility’s functionality and allows for a new collection of rare and remarkable plants. – Mark Champion
The Cannabis Factory Opens Store with Drive-Thru Window
The Cannabis Factory has opened at 3434 South 84th Street in the Westgate area in a building that was once the Omaha Fire Department’s hazmat facility. More recently, it was a Midwest Medical Transport Co. location. The store is open daily and includes drive-thru open 24 hours a day. the Cannabis Factory has 22 locations in Nebraska and says its “Nebraska’s number-one cannabis dispensary.”
Kansas-Based Bank to Acquire Frontier Bank of Omaha
Equity Bank of Wichita, Kan., announced today it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Omaha-based Frontier Bank, marking Equity’s entrance into the Nebraska market. Frontier has $1.4 billion in total assets and operates seven locations in eastern Nebraska. Subject to receipt of customary regulatory and member approvals and closing conditions, the merger is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Creighton Business Index Reports Shows Slight Economic Growth
For the seventh time in 2025, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, rose slightly above growth neutral in August. The index, which ranges between 0 and 100 with 50.0 representing growth neutral, climbed to 50.5 from 49.4 in July.
Downtown Tech Company Makes Office Move
QAT Global is relocating its downtown office from the twin towers of Central Park Plaza to the Capitol District. According to a building permit, QAT Global is planning to remodel space at 1100 Capitol Avenue, an office building with ground floor retail. Current office tenants include Deloitte and Private Wealth Asset Management. QAT Global is a locally grown IT company with international offices in Costa Rica and Brazil. Los Concuños MexicanFood Opens in Omaha
Los Concuños MexicanFood, a food truck, debuted on August 24 at 9630 Ida Street in the Tractor Supply Co. parking lot. The truck serves tacos, tortas, burritos, sopes, super fries, super nachos and menudo on weekends. – Nicole Buntgen
Barbershop Opening Inside Oakview Mall
G1fted Barbershop plans to open September 2nd in Oakview Mall. Locally owned by Wellson Yusif, the 1,300 sq. ft. barbershop will be located next to mall’s food court near JCPenney. G1fted will be open seven days a week.

Bad Seed Coffee Closing Both Locations
After more than 10 years in business, Bad Seed Coffee & Supply will close its shops at 5015 Dodge Street and 2452 Harney Street on September 13 or while supplies last. New Apartment Units in Omaha Up 79 Percent
RentCafe expects another robust year of apartment construction with more than 500,000 new units anticipated to open nationwide by year’s end. Over the past 10 years, apartment openings averaged 439,000 per year, with a crest of 640,000 openings in 2024. RentCafe also tracked year-over-year increases in apartment openings. Notably, Omaha has the 7th highest year-over-year increase in openings expected in 2025 compared to 2024. Omaha’s expected 3,335 new openings in 2025 is 79% more than openings in 2024. - Isaiah Ang
Locally Owned Liquor Store Coming to Blackstone District
Shoeman’s Liquor & More plans to open in the Blackstone District inside the recently completed 37 West Farnam Building. The space is just west of Revival House along the south side of Farnam Street. The wine, beer and spirits store will be locally owned by Chad Shoeman, who also has the Red Lion Lounge a block to the west. Interior build-out is underway.
Big Grove Taphouse Opening Delayed After License Denial
Big Grove Brewery’s taphouse in the Catalyst building has delayed opening after the Nebraska Liquor Commission denied its craft brewer’s license, an exemption typically reserved for local breweries. Regulators said the denial came because Big Grove already manufactures alcohol and tried to use a separate entity to qualify. The Iowa-based brewery is now seeking a liquor manufacturer’s license, which would allow it to open but limit offerings to its own beer. - Nicole Buntgen
National Tire Store Chain Entering Omaha Market
Les Schwab Tire Center plans to open its first Omaha-area location at 121 Scott Road in Papillion’s Tower District, just north of 84th & Highway 370. According to a Papillion city building permit, the 2-story building will have seven service bays. Based in Bend, Ore., Les Schwab Tire has nearly 600 stores in 15 states mostly in the western part of the country. The only existing Nebraska store is in North Platte.
Kros Strain Releases Official Husker Beer
La Vista-based Kros Strain Brewing Company has partnered with Nebraska Athletics to launch Cornhusker Crusher, “the official beer of the Huskers.” The wheat ale with a light citrus flavor will be available year-round at the brewery’s La Vista and downtown Omaha taprooms and at Memorial Stadium during football games. - Nicole Buntgen
Centris Credit Union Plans Ribbon-Cutting for Ames Branch
Centris Federal Credit Union will hold a ribbon cutting Wednesday, September 17 at 8:15 a.m. for its latest location at 6572 Ames Avenue. The new branch office is on the site of a former restaurant building which was demolished. Centris has 14 offices in the Omaha metro area as well as Grand Island and North Platte, Neb.
Japanese Steakhouse Breaks Ground Near 180th & Maple
A groundbreaking ceremony took place last week for Kyoto Sushi & Hibachi, a Japanese steakhouse planned for 18118 Evans Street. The 1.3-acre site is southwest of 180th & West Maple Road. The 7,000 sq. ft. restaurant will occupy part of a 12,558 sq. ft. retail building expected to be complete sometime next year. Kyoto’s owners are Michael and Amy Chen, who also own Osaka Steakhouse & Sushi Bar at 12746 Westport Parkway in La Vista.

The Still Plans to Open West Omaha Store This Week
The Still, a longtime wine and spirits store in Lincoln, is expanding to west Omaha. Located at 204th & V Street in the Coventry development, the new store is scheduled to open August 28. Both the store and the recently completed building are owned by Omaha-based Gottsch Enterprises.
Millard Activity Center Gets Naming Rights Sponsor
Millard Public Schools Foundation has announced a naming rights partnership with Iowa-based GreenState Credit Union for an activity center under construction near 210th & Q Street. The 85,000 sq. ft., privately funded facility will be known as GreenState Millard Activity Center. Opening is scheduled for fall 2026. GreenState was founded in 1938 and was previously known as University of Iowa Community Credit Union. Its first Nebraska location opened recently at 181st & West Maple Road.
Signage Installed at Future Hawaiian Bros Location
Crews are installing signage today at a future Hawaiian Bros Island Grill restaurant, which is going into the former Boston Market building at 704 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. Hawaiian Bros’ first Nebraska location opened a year and a half ago near Interstate 80 & Highway 370 in Gretna. The Kansas City-based restaurant chain has 65 locations in 12 states.
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings Coming to The Yard
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings will open at 812 North 14th Street in the former Session Room space on the southeast corner of the first floor at 1415 @ The Yard Apartments, according to Oak Investment Real Estate. The 3,600 sq. ft. restaurant has not announced an opening date. – Nicole Buntgen
Papio-Missouri NRD Selling Surplus Properties in North O
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District is selling surplus properties in north Omaha totaling 3.6 acres to inCommon Housing Development for $53,837. The three parcels are located near Military Avenue & Hamilton Street next to the under-construction Beltline trailhead. inCommon plans to convert the vacant properties into rental and for-sale housing and public green space. inCommon is currently developing a residential project at Park & Poppleton avenues. – Isaiah Ang
Airline Plastics Renovates Corporate Office
Airlite Plastics is renovating its corporate headquarters at 6110 Abbott Drive near Eppley Airfield. According to a building permit application, Airlite plans to invest $1 million to create new divisions and office space in the building. Airlite was founded in Omaha and has more than 1,100 employees in six North American locations. It manufactures prepackaged food containers. – Isaiah Ang
Sugared Ledge Bakery Closing Elkhorn Location
Sugared Ledge Bakery will close its Elkhorn shop at 920 North 204th Avenue on August 24. The business, which temporarily closed in February for renovations, said it will not renew its lease due to space limitations but is seeking a larger location. – Nicole Buntgen
Teledyne Prepares for New Omaha Location
Teledyne CETAC Technologies is renovating a light industrial space at 11105 Mockingbird Drive. The location was previously occupied by Cybotic Health Technologies. Teledyne is headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and provides products and services for elemental analysis of samples ranging from drinking water to radioactive waste. Bowlero Rebrands Elkhorn Location as Lucky Strike
Bowlero has rebranded its Elkhorn bowling entertainment center at 20902 Cumberland Drive as Lucky Strike, following the Virginia-based brand’s 2023 acquisition. The company’s Council Bluffs location at 1900 Madison Avenue is also slated to rebrand as part of a two-year rollout. – Nicole Buntgen
