Creighton and Omaha will renew their crosstown rivalry on Wednesday at 6 p.m., playing the first of two games against each other in just one week. The second out of three matchups this season will take place next Tuesday, March 24, at 6 p.m. The first two games will be held at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, and Omaha will host the series finale on April 22 at Tal Anderson Field.
Both programs, still trying to find their footing early this season, enter Wednesday’s game on a three-game winning streak. Omaha (7-10) swept North Dakota State over the weekend to begin Summit League play 3-0, while Creighton (8-8) took this weekend’s series at Tulane.
Creighton and Omaha have met 100 times with the Bluejays holding a 64-36 edge. Since 2012 Creighton leads 19-9, including taking two of three last season.
Omaha head coach Evan Porter, an Omaha alumnus and Hall of Fame inductee, Class of 2018, is no stranger to this rivalry. In his ninth season as head coach, he owns a 6-14 record against the Bluejays. Wednesday will provide an opportunity to improve that mark against first-year Creighton head coach Mark Kingston.
Mark Kingston helped lead Creighton back to the NCAA Tournament in 2025 as the associate head coach and coach-in-waiting under Ed Servais, and in 2026, became Creighton’s 11th head coach in program history. Kingston will now get his first chance at a win against crosstown rival, Omaha as head coach.
More familiar with this rivalry than the two head coaches are the 18 combined players from the Omaha metro on the two rosters.
Omaha leads the way with 14 players hailing from the metro: Henry Zipay (Westside), Brayden Curtis, Jackson Trout and Brycen Botos (Papillion La Vista South), Joey Craig (Omaha Central), Tanner Foertsch and Cal Cooper (Elkhorn South), Nate Moquin (Millard South), Drew Borner (Millard West), Tanner Hosick (Bellevue West), Michael Sall and Nick Riggs (Creighton Prep), Hayden Lewis (Yutan) and Drew Iverson (Plattsmouth).
Creighton holds four players from the metro: Connor Capece (Gross Catholic), Nick Venteicher (Millard West), Shea Wendt (Blair) and Robert O’Malley (Creighton Prep).
To these players, Wednesday’s matchup is more than just a win or a loss, it’s for pride, and the claim to the city.
Omaha swept the two games that the two programs played in 2022, but on Wednesday, the Mavericks will set out to win their first-ever three-game season series over Creighton. First pitch at Charles Schwab Field Omaha is set for 6 p.m. and tickets are now on sale.
