Building the Omaha of the Future – Together

June 9, 2025

Guest Column by Heath Mello
President & CEO, Greater Omaha Chamber

On behalf of the Greater Omaha Chamber and the entire business community, we would like to extend our congratulations to Mayor John Ewing on his historic victory as Omaha’s new mayor. Your election marks an exciting chapter, filled with promise for stronger partnerships and collaborative action to build a more prosperous city.

Mayor Ewing takes office at a pivotal moment as the Chamber and our partners advance our comprehensive economic development strategy, “A Greater Omaha.” This strategy puts people at its center, recognizing that true economic success is measured in part by the quality of life for all residents. Omaha thrives when its people thrive, which is why the Chamber remains committed to an inclusive economic growth agenda.

Our new approach is epitomized in our innovative “Scaling Homegrown Innovation” program, a key initiative within “A Greater Omaha.” This economic gardening tactic prioritizes nurturing local entrepreneurs and existing businesses, providing the resources, mentoring, and strategic guidance needed to scale operations. By focusing on local talent and supporting homegrown innovation, we are not only boosting economic resilience but also ensuring wealth creation stays in Omaha, benefiting our neighborhoods, schools, and communities directly.

Yet, while nurturing our local businesses remains critical, we must also proactively recruit new businesses offering high-paying jobs. Mayor Ewing’s tenure presents an unparalleled opportunity to emphasize Omaha’s unique assets to companies seeking locations offering exceptional workforce talent, robust infrastructure, and a high quality of life. Targeted recruitment of businesses in sectors such as insurance, healthcare, AI, and advanced manufacturing will diversify and fortify Omaha’s economic landscape, enhancing job opportunities for current and future residents.

Moreover, Mayor Ewing’s historic election underscores a crucial moment for Omaha to actively engage every community member, ensuring equitable access to economic opportunities. This commitment aligns directly with the Chamber’s people-centric approach. Working together, we can address longstanding disparities, build stronger neighborhoods, and provide pathways for all Omahans to succeed.

As we look ahead, collaboration between city leadership, the Chamber, and community partners will be essential. We have the blueprint in “A Greater Omaha” and the momentum through programs like “Scaling Homegrown Innovation” and our new “Workforce Excellence” department. Our collective success relies on a shared commitment to fostering an economy where innovation flourishes, new businesses thrive, and everyone shares in the city’s growth.

Congratulations once again, Mayor Ewing. The Greater Omaha Chamber is eager to partner with your administration, businesses, and residents to build the Omaha of the future—one where everyone has the opportunity and resources to succeed. Let’s seize this significant moment and work together to make Omaha even greater.
