December 21, 2025

Heath Mello, president & CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber released the following statement regarding Union Pacific Corporation and Norfolk Southern Corporation filing an application today with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) requesting approval to combine the two railroads:

“This is a truly historic moment for our country and a monumental milestone for Greater Omaha.

“Union Pacific Railroad’s filing with the Surface Transportation Board to create America’s first transcontinental railroad marks a defining chapter in our nation’s economic story. One that will shape freight transportation, supply chains, and the competitive landscape for generations to come.

“Union Pacific’s history is woven into the fabric of Nebraska and who we are as a state. For more than 160 years, Union Pacific has connected communities, moved vital goods, and powered economic growth across our state and the region. This merger with Norfolk Southern reflects not only a bold step forward in transportation infrastructure but also an enduring commitment to innovation and national competitiveness.

“The Greater Omaha Chamber and our partners stand ready to do everything needed to support this endeavor, but first of all we extend a huge congratulations to Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern on this visionary move. What is underway here will be studied by future leaders as a landmark achievement in American economic history.
