Creighton Baseball Faces Tough Tests Against Nebraska & UConn

Creighton baseball has another big week ahead, beginning with a Tuesday night bout with a ranked opponent. The Bluejays will face an in-state rival for a third straight week, hosting No. 19 Nebraska at Charles Schwab Field Omaha today at 6 p.m.

Creighton trails the all-time series with Nebraska 94-57-2. However, the Bluejays have taken 13 out of the last 16 matchups in the series, dating back to the 2018 season. Last season, Creighton took the season series, 2-1.

Something to watch for is a too-comfortable home team – the road team won each game last season. Another is if head coach Mark Kingston and the Bluejays can score a ranked victory. Creighton is 5-19 against Nebraska when the Huskers are ranked.

Tuesday’s game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and the local radio broadcast will be on 1620 AM.

Following Tuesday’s rivalry game, Creighton will head to Storrs, Conn. for a weekend series against UConn and the first Big East action of the season for the Bluejays.

The two programs have met just 15 times, with Connecticut holding a 10-5 advantage. Creighton however, won their first series over UConn last season, 2-1, and defeated the Huskies in the Big East Championship to reach the NCAA Tournament.

While Creighton hasn’t faced a Big East opponent this season, UConn is already off to a hot start, taking Xavier down in a series over the weekend, 2-1. The Bluejays will have no better early-season test than at UConn, where they are 1-5 all-time.

Creighton provides almost a perfect coin flip result in the opening game of Big East play, going 6-5 in the first game of the season since joining the league in the 2013-14 academic year. They are 7-4 in the first Big East away game of the season in that timeframe.

A potential measuring stick for this weekend’s game could be the common opponent that both the Bluejays and Huskies will share by first pitch on Thursday. UConn opened its season with a 12-2 run-rule loss to Nebraska, ending after seven innings.

This weekend’s series will begin on Thursday, April 2, at 5:05 p.m. and each game can be streamed live on ESPN+.

The March 26th Sports Report

Following the announcement of Greg McDermott’s retirement, Creighton men’s basketball introduced Alan Huss as the 17th head coach in program history on Wednesday. Huss served as an assistant coach for six years (2017-2023) at Creighton before returning last April as associate head coach and head coach-in-waiting.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton University,” Huss said. “This university has meant so much to me as a former player, as an alum and through the seven years I’ve spent serving this program. Creighton helped shape who I am, and the opportunity to now lead this program is something I do not take lightly.”

Alan Huss will take over as head coach after Greg McDermott’s retirement following Creighton’s participation in the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas (April 2-5).

The Omaha Supernovas’ three-match winning streak was snapped on Wednesday night by the San Diego Mojo, 3-1. Omaha took set one 25-16, but was subdued by the Mojo, who took the next three sets 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. The Supernovas will enjoy an extended break, with their next match at the Atlanta Vibe next Thursday, April 2.

Opposite hitter Emily Londot was named the Major League Volleyball Player of the Week by the league prior to Wednesday’s match. Londot recorded a match-high 18 points on 17 kills while posting a career-best .417 hitting percentage in Omaha’s sweep of the Grand Rapids Rise last Friday. She becomes the first opposite hitter to earn an MLV weekly award in 2026.

LOVB Nebraska scored a reverse sweep on the road against LOVB Atlanta on Wednesday night. With the win, Nebraska vaulted Atlanta in league standings and now sits in third place with three matches remaining before the LOVB playoffs, beginning April 10. Nebraska has to face the top two teams in LOVB standings, Houston and Salt Lake, in its next two matches, beginning with a home match against LOVB Salt Lake on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Creighton and Omaha baseball met for the second time in seven days on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field. Creighton trailed 6-3 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth before using five straight singles to score three runs and tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Nate McHugh secured the walk-off victory for the Bluejays, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.

Creighton went right back to work against South Dakota State Wednesday night, and defeated the Jackrabbits, 11-5. Creighton will host Sacramento State for a weekend series, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Omaha will return to Summit League play this weekend, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a series against St. Thomas. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday. Omaha is now 8-14 on the season and 4-2 in Summit League action.

Wednesday night, Omaha softball hosted Creighton for the first of two meetings this season, and defeated the Bluejays 3-2. Creighton took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning on a double from Kaelan Shultz. Omaha answered in the bottom of the inning when Taylor Sedlacek scored on a wild pitch. Omaha took the lead for good in the fourth with a solo home run from Sammy Schmidt and run-scoring groundout by Bailey Sample.

Omaha (21-7, 3-0) will host Summit League foe Kansas City for a weekend series, beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Creighton (15-8, 7-2) will host Seattle for a weekend series, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Union Omaha defeated USL League One newcomers, Athletic Club Boise, in its home opener on Sunday, 3-2. Omaha had help from Boise midfielder Philip Mayaka, who gave the Owls their first goal of the match on an own goal. From there, Omaha forward Diego Gutierrez scored twice to put the Owls over the top, delivering the game-winner in the 84th minute. Omaha returns to action at Morrison Stadium on Saturday, hosting Corpus Christi FC at 4 p.m.

The Omaha Kings FC will return to Baxter Arena on Friday for their final home match of the regular season against the Wichita Wings. The club will be hosting Military & First Responders Night, with all active and retired military members and first responders receiving free admission and discounted tickets for family members. At halftime, the organization will recognize the Omaha Queens FC, which just concluded their season. Friday’s match will kick off at 7 p.m.

League One Volleyball announced on Tuesday that the LOVB Championship will be held at LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif., on Thursday, April 16 and Saturday, April 18. The top two teams from the three-day LOVB Playoffs, held April 10-12 in Louisville, Kentucky, will enter a two-day championship format. Should the two matches yield different winners, they’ll move to a golden set to decide who takes home the trophy. First serve for the championship match is set for Saturday, April 18 at 5 p.m. PT, live on USA Network.

Next Tuesday, Creighton baseball and softball will each host in-state rival Nebraska for a downtown doubleheader, beginning with the women at the Creighton Softball Stadium at 5 p.m. Baseball’s first pitch will be thrown at Charles Schwab Field one hour later, at 6 p.m.

In the last 10 complete matchups against Nebraska, Creighton softball is 1-9, while baseball has found more success, going 8-2 against the Huskers. Tuesday’s game against Nebraska will be Creighton softball’s only one this season, while baseball will play a full season series, heading to Lincoln on Tuesday, April 14 before returning to Omaha for the season finale on Tuesday, May 12.

Coach Greg McDermott Retires from Creighton Basketball

Greg McDermott, the all-time winningest coach in Creighton men’s basketball history, announced today his decision to retire from his position as head coach of the Creighton men’s basketball program following the team’s final game in the College Basketball Crown tournament. At that time, Alan Huss, who returned to his alma mater last April as associate head coach and head coach in waiting, will take over as head coach of the Bluejay program.

“It has been an incredible honor to lead the Creighton men’s basketball program for the past 16 years,” said McDermott. “I’m very proud of the young men that have proudly worn the Bluejay uniform and represented our program in a first-class manner. Witnessing their growth and development on and off the playing floor was especially gratifying.

“I’m deeply grateful for the support of my family, our players, coaching staff and support staff, as well as the presidents, athletic directors, and all the University and athletic administrators. The support of the Omaha community consistently packing our arena with 17,000 fans has created many fond memories.

“While this chapter of my career comes to a close, my love and respect for the Bluejays will never fade. I look forward to the continued success of Bluejay basketball under the leadership of Alan Huss.”

“I join Creighton men’s basketball fans and supporters everywhere in thanking Coach McDermott for his 16 years as head coach,” said Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD. “He has guided our teams to thrilling wins and numerous NCAA Tournament appearances. Beyond the basketball court, he has helped student-athletes develop into leaders and galvanized our community with events like the Creighton vs. Cancer Pink Out game. While we will miss Coach McDermott’s leadership and presence on the sidelines, I am confident Coach Huss will continue to build upon our culture of excellence and success.”

With Coach McDermott’s retirement, Creighton University is implementing the innovative coaching transition plan that was announced in April 2025 by Fr. Hendrickson and McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom, with collaborative insight from Coach McDermott.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton University,” said Huss. “This University has meant so much to me as a former player, as an alumnus and through the seven years I’ve spent serving this program. Creighton helped shape who I am, and the opportunity to now lead this program is something I do not take lightly.”

McDermott compiled a 365-188 record in his 16 years at Creighton. During that time, he led the Bluejays to 14 seasons of 20-plus wins and 12 NCAA Tournament wins in 10 NCAA Tournament trips, including one Elite Eight (2022-2023) and three Sweet 16 appearances (2020-2021, 2022-2023, 2023-2024). Creighton has 21 victories in 14 postseason trips overall under McDermott, taking two teams to the NIT quarterfinals and one to the CBI final. That doesn’t take into account the 2019-2020 season, when Creighton won a share of its lone BIG EAST title to date and was ranked seventh nationally before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to the 2019-2020 BIG EAST regular-season title, Creighton also won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season crown in 2012-2013 as well as the Valley Tournament title in both 2012 and 2013.

McDermott helped transition Creighton from the Missouri Valley Conference to the BIG EAST in 2013. The Bluejays rank second in league victories in that time and its active streak of 10 straight top-five BIG EAST finishes ranks as the third-longest streak in league history and the best by any program in 35 years. Creighton has met or exceeded its preseason poll prediction in 11 of 13 years in the BIG EAST. McDermott’s 147 league victories rank sixth in the storied history of the BIG EAST, trailing only Naismith Hall of Fame inductees Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, Jay Wright, John Thompson and Rick Pitino.

Creighton has produced three NBA First Round picks (Doug McDermott, Justin Patton, Baylor Scheierman) and three NBA Second Round picks (Khyri Thomas, Marcus Zegarowski, Ryan Kalkbrenner) during his tenure. His son, Doug McDermott, was a three-time First Team All-American and was named National Player of the Year following the 2013-2014 season as he finished with 3,150 career points, ranking fifth in NCAA history at the time.

Creighton has been a fixture in the Top 25 under McDermott, spending 121 weeks in the Associated Press rankings. His teams have produced 43 Top-25 victories, with 17 Top-10 wins, including triumphs over No. 1 Connecticut and No. 1 Kansas in 2024.

McDermott’s impact hasn’t been limited to on-court success. He was recognized after the 2017-2018 season with the NABC’s Coaches vs. Cancer Champions Award, a testament to his work in the community and with the program’s annual Pink Out game. Held each January, Creighton’s Pink Out game has raised over $1 million to benefit Hope Lodge and support the ongoing fight against cancer.

Additionally, 35 of 37 seniors who completed their eligibility requirements over the past 12 years have earned their undergraduate degree, with 26 going on to play professionally and four others attending graduate school.

The on-campus home to Creighton men’s basketball was renamed from The Championship Center to The McDermott Center in 2024. Creighton plans to honor Coach McDermott for his contributions to the men’s basketball program with the hanging of a banner at CHI Health Center Omaha arena during a halftime ceremony at a yet-to-be-determined game during the 2026-2027 season.
