The January 1st Sports Report
Creighton men’s basketball guard Josh Dix was named Big East Player of the Week on Monday. In Creighton’s game last week against Utah Tech, Dix put up 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. He is the first Bluejay this season to earn Big East Player of the Week honors.
The Bluejays also improved to 3-0 in Big East play, defeating Butler 89-85 on Tuesday. Creighton was led by a career-high 23 points from Omaha native Jasen Green. Miami transfer Austin Swartz added 22 points. Creighton will travel to Newark, N.J. this Sunday, December 4, to take on 12-2 Seton Hall. That game will begin at 11 a.m. and will be streamed live on Peacock.
Omaha hockey won an exhibition against Manitoba at Baxter Arena on Tuesday, 4-1. This weekend, it’s back to business against another ranked opponent. The Mavericks travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face No. 17 Cornell. Puck drop on both Friday and Saturday will be at 6 p.m.
Omaha men’s basketball will begin its conference schedule today at South Dakota State. The Mavericks finished their nonconference schedule with seven wins, the best mark since coach Chris Crutchfield took over the program in 2022. Today’s matchup against the Jackrabbits will tip off at 4:15 p.m.
Omaha women’s basketball has added two new faces to its roster following midseason tryouts. The December 24th Sports Report
Creighton baseball was picked to finish second in the Big East in the 2026 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released last Thursday. The Bluejays won both the Big East regular season and tournament championships last season in Ed Servais’ final season at the helm. In 2026, Mark Kingston will take over after spending 2025 as the associate head coach/coach-in-waiting under Servais. Kingston brings 15 years of head coaching experience to the Bluejays and has brought each team he was head coach of (South Carolina, South Florida, Illinois State) to the NCAA Tournament.
Junior catcher Connor Capece and sophomore pitcher Wilson Magers were both unanimous selections to the Preseason All-Big East Team. Magers earned the Big East Freshman of the Year award last season, recording a team-high 67.0 innings pitched while posting a 3.09 ERA.
Creighton will begin its 2026 season against Saint Mary’s on February 13.
Following a disappointing start to the season, Creighton men’s basketball has shot out of the gates in conference play, carrying a Big East Conference record +62-point differential through its first two Big East games. The previous conference record for point differential over the first two Big East games was +50 by Providence in 1988-89. While set against two struggling offenses in Xavier and Marquette, the staggering differential is encouraging for Greg McDermott, who is still trying to find a reliable rotation on a team with nine new faces and two season-ending injuries. Creighton defeated Utah Tech on Monday, 92-69, to round out nonconference play. Next Tuesday, December 30, the Bluejays return to conference play, hosting Butler at 8 p.m.
Arena Soccer has returned to Baxter Arena, as the Omaha Kings and Omaha Queens each hosted the men’s and women’s clubs from the Iowa Raptors last weekend. The Queens were featured first in Saturday’s doubleheader, dominating the Raptors 9-1. The Kings fell in the second game 4-5 in overtime.
Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) represents the highest level of professional indoor soccer in the world and features teams across the country with players from more than 50 countries. The Omaha Kings FC and Omaha Queens FC are Omaha’s professional men’s and women’s arena soccer clubs, competing in MASL2 and MASLW, respectively. MASL2 is the second division of the Major Arena Soccer League, while MASLW is the first women’s indoor league under the MASL umbrella.
Omaha Hockey won its first game since November 29 on Saturday, defeating Augustana 4-1. The Mavericks split the series, but that and their upcoming three games are not NCHC matchups, allowing them an opportunity to get back on track before returning to conference play for the rest of the season. Omaha is 7-11 on the season and 3-7 in conference play. Next Tuesday, December 30, they return home for a home game against Manitoba at 7 p.m.
Creighton Volleyball has added two transfers to its 2026 roster following the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament. Junior middle hitter Ayden Ames (Texas) and graduate setter Katie Dalton (Kansas) will become Bluejays next year, with two and one seasons of eligibility, respectively. Creighton has had three different transfers earn All-American honors the past two seasons.
Omaha men’s basketball guard Lance Waddles was named Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Waddles scored 25 points in each of Omaha’s wins last week against York (Neb.) and Lamar, shooting 67.9 percent from the field. He is the first Maverick men’s basketball player to earn a weekly honor this season.

The December 18th Sports Report
Terence Crawford announced his retirement from sanctioned boxing on Tuesday via a post on his Instagram account. The Omaha native ends his career a perfect 42-0, with 31 wins coming by way of knockout, and is the first boxer in the four-belt era to be undisputed champion in two and three divisions.
Crawford is known to represent his hometown of Omaha on the national stage and show his appreciation for the city he still calls home. Mayor John Ewing paid appreciation back to Crawford, stating that “Bud Crawford made boxing history while wearing his hometown name. Beyond his success in the ring, I have always appreciated Bud’s love for Omaha, his service to youths and the way he brought people together to share in his victories.”
Crawford did not announce what is next in his retirement video, but did state that this is the start of a new fight for him. The world champion is likely to remain in the boxing world in some capacity.
Creighton Volleyball had its season ended on Saturday, falling in three sets to Kentucky. Head coach Brian Rosen ended his first season 28-6, winning both the Big East regular-season and tournament titles. Creighton is still seeking its first Volleyball Final Four in school history, where it would become the first school without football to make the Final Four since Santa Clara in 2005.
Seniors Ava Martin, Kiara Reinhardt and Annalea Maeder earned All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday. Martin and Reinhardt were named to the Second Team, while Annalea Maeder earned a Third Team nod. Creighton’s three All-Americans were tied for fifth most in the nation, trailing only Kentucky, Nebraska, SMU and Texas A&M, who had four each.
The University of Nebraska Omaha announced last week that it has opted in to the terms of the House case settlement effective for the 2026-27 academic year. Omaha did not opt in for the first year of the settlement to better position its athletic department for future opportunities to do so. The athletic department decided 2026-27 is the optimal time to opt in and improve its ability to attract top coaching and student-athlete talent.
This summer, a federal judge approved a $2.8 billion antitrust settlement that will allow schools to pay student-athletes directly for their name, image and likeness through licensing deals. The decision came from a lawsuit filed by Grant House, a former Arizona State swimmer who sued the NCAA and “Power Five” athletic conferences.
Beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, schools now have the opportunity to opt-in and share up to $20.5 million with student athletes, with that funding coming from sources such as media rights revenue, ticket sales and sponsorships. These funds are to be distributed among entire athletic departments. Omaha did not opt in for this academic year.
Omaha Storm Chasers director of marketing and creative, Alex Seder, has been recognized with Diamond Baseball Holdings’ Triple Play Award for Creativity, Innovation and Problem Solving. The Triple-Play Award recognizes someone who brings a combination of creativity, innovation and problem solving to the table. The recipient, nominated by their coworkers, is someone who thinks outside the box to take on club challenges or reach their goals.
Omaha men’s basketball senior guard Ja’Sean Glover recorded the program’s first triple-double in program history in a 105-58 win over York (Neb.) on Tuesday. Glover recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, with 10 of his rebounds coming in the second half. The Mavericks will head to Beaumont, Tex., on Saturday to face Lamar at 6 p.m.
The Omaha Supernovas will have 13 of their 28 matches featured on national broadcasts this season, as Major League Volleyball unveiled its full schedule Thursday. The Supernovas have announced their local broadcast coverage for next season, with Nebraska Public Media (five matches) and News Channel Nebraska (four matches) providing statewide coverage for nine of their 14 home matches. The 13 national broadcasts will air across CBS Sports Network, VICE TV and the Roku Sports Channel.
Wednesday night, Creighton and Omaha women’s basketball held a crosstown rivalry game at Baxter Arena, and the Bluejays headed back downtown with a 92-48 win. Sisters Neleigh and Nora Gessert combined for 40 points to put Creighton over the top.
Creighton returns to Big East play on Saturday, hosting DePaul at 1 p.m. Omaha will head to Los Angeles for the Loyola Marymount Tournament, where it will face Southern Utah on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Weber State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Omaha Hockey, following a strong start to the season where it saw itself receiving votes in the USCHO poll, has now lost five of its last six games. Over the weekend, Omaha was swept by No. 4 North Dakota, falling 4-1 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. This weekend, the Mavericks will head to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face Augustana. Puck drops will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Creighton men’s basketball began Big East conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Cincinnati, where it handed Xavier its worst ever home loss, 98-57. The Bluejays were led by a career-high 27 points from sophomore transfer Austin Swartz. Wednesday’s game was Creighton’s first win in a conference opener since 2021. Saturday will feature another Big East battle when Creighton welcomes Marquette to the CHI Health Center at 7:30 p.m.
