Uptown Java Opens in Olde Towne Elkhorn
Uptown Java held a grand opening last Thursday in the former Fala’s Coffeehouse space at 2627 North 205th Street. The Olde Towne Elkhorn coffee shop is operated by Fresh Hope for Mental Health founders Pastor Brad & Donna Hoefs, with all profits going to support the ministry.
City Moves Forward on Streetcar Maintenance Facility
The City Omaha Council approved an agreement with Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority to accommodate the building of the streetcar vehicle maintenance facility. The amendment reduces the land leased by MECA from the city on the Lot A surface parking lot, south of the CHI Health Arena. The facility will be located next to an existing OPPD substation just north of the I-480 overpass. Site plans show three separate rail entrances and an outdoor spur along the side of the 2-story building. – Isaiah Ang
Cabin Coffee Coming Soon to Papillon
Cabin Coffee is opening its first Nebraska location at 99th & Portal Road in Papillion. The drive-thru coffee chain is based in Clear Lake, Iowa and currently has 23 locations in seven states. The closest existing locations are in Winterset, Iowa and Savannah, Mo. Opening is planned for January.
Greenbelly Closes Last Remaining Location
Greenbelly has abruptly closed its doors at 210 North 114th Street, just southwest of 114th & Dodge. The family-owned restaurant, which opened in Omaha in 2008, had previously operated additional locations in Elkhorn and Aksarben. – Nicole Buntgen
Back from the dead? Dario’s Reopens for One Night
Dario’s Brasserie, Dundee’s beloved French eatery that closed in 2022 after 16 years, will return for a one-night pop-up tomorrow, October 31st. Classics like cheeseburgers, mussels and French onion soup will be served from 4 to 8 p.m. at Avoli Osteria, a northern Italian spot under the same ownership at 5013 Underwood Avenue. Ice-Skating Rink Coming to Heartwood Preserve
Heartwood Preserve plans to transform Heartwood Park into a holiday ice-skating rink along with festive attractions as part of Winterland at Heartwood Preserve in celebration of the holidays. Heartwood Park is located just west of Boys Town. The ice-skating rink, which will open to the public on November 29, will offer free, 90-minute ice-skating sessions and free skate rental courtesy of Applied Underwriters. The skating rink will be open daily through January 5.
Restaurant Goes Out of Business in Olde Towne Bellevue
Mission Ave BBQ at 900 West Mission Avenue in Bellevue plans to close permanently this Saturday – November 2nd. The restaurant was only open about a year and a half.
Untamed Kitchen Permanently Closing Today
Today is the last day of business for Untamed Kitchen at 1421 Farnam Street. The healthy food restaurant opened in October of 2023. The owner plans to reopen next year in a yet-to-be determined location.
Taste of India Moves to Blackstone District
Taste of India has relocated to 3562 Farnam Street in the former Farnam House Brewing Company space near 36th & Farnam in Blackstone, according to Sage Capital Real Estate Investments. The restaurant previously operated from a very small building at 3572 Leavenworth Street near 36th & Leavenworth. – Nicole Buntgen
Ziggi’s Coffee Opens November 22nd
Exterior signage has been installed for Ziggi’s Coffee Drive Thru’s first metro-area location near 201st & Q Street. Omaha-based Perkins-Critser Construction is the contractor. Ziggi’s will open for business on November 22nd. Colorado-based Ziggi’s has locations nationwide including one in Lincoln and one in Fairbury, Neb.
MAPA Releases “Safe Streets” Survey Results
As part of its Safe Streets for All project, the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency has released early survey results, showing the greatest safety concerns for metro area residents: 65 percent of safety concerns are reported to be at intersections; 57 percent of participants report feeling unsafe as a driver while 29 percent report feeling unsafe as a pedestrian; 56 percent report feeling unsafe due to speeding.
Café Expanding in Old Towne Bellevue
The Light House Cafe at 119 West Mission Avenue in Olde Towne Bellevue is expanding and adding a full-service coffee shop. The business will double in size, taking over the three bays next door. The Light House Coffee Shop features local Bellevue-roasted Reboot Roasting Bean, a variety of coffees and teas plus light-fare foods and pastries. Opening is planned during the holiday season.
Prehistoric Putt Open This Friday in Former Nobbies Building
Prehistoric Putt will open its new location in the former Nobbies building this Friday, November 1st, at 2500 South 120th Street in Bel Air Plaza. Its current Omaha location at 11134 Q Street will remain open until October 31st. The indoor miniature golf course has other locations in Independence, Mo. and in Lincoln. The owner also operates The Fat Putter, Medieval Putt, and Capitol Arcade. – Nicole Buntgen
Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse Closing October 31st
Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse is closing its Village Pointe location this Thursday – October 31st. That’s two months before the current lease expires. The restaurant is located north of Kona Grill and west of the brand-new Nordstrom Rack. There are no plans to reopen a Johnny’s anywhere else in the Omaha area. Heart of America Group, the Moline, Illinois-based parent company, does plan to open a Burger Shed restaurant next year southwest of 180th & West Maple Road.
Unique Restaurant Closes on Council Bluffs Riverfront
The Terrace, a social enterprise café located at 4201 River’s Edge Parkway in Council Bluffs, will permanently close on November 1. No reason for the closure was provided. The café opened in the summer of 2023 just east of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain independence and learn life skills. – Nicole Buntgen
New Bar Opens in Blackstone District
Muki Lounge has opened in the former Sports Hall space at 3852 Farnam Street in the Blackstone District. The bar is next door to Lucky Tiger Izakaya.
Could Trader Joe’s Be Coming to North Downtown?
In his annual Presidential Town Hall program last month, Creighton University president Fr. Daniel Hendrickson said Trader Joe’s grocery store may be built on or near the university’s North Downtown campus. A Creightonian article says, “Hendrickson also noted that an on-campus Trader Joe’s is in the works.” No other details were provided. Creighton is currently building a sophomore residence hall as well as new baseball and softball fields along the south side of Cuming Street.
It’s All About Signs Opens Pop-Up Store in Oakview
It’s All About the Signs recently opened a pop-up store inside Oak View Mall at 3001 South 144th Street for its second consecutive year. The Omaha-based business, which launched in 2010, primarily sells products at car shows across 11 states. Items include posters, tins, wood signs, and lighted and non-lighted metal signs for homes, garages, and man caves. – Nicole Buntgen
Local Coffee Shop Relocates to NW Omaha
Hay Jay Coffee has reopened in a new location at 8001 North 157th Street, just southwest of 156th & State Street. The original location had been at 1416 North Saddle Creek but it closed earlier this year. The shop serves products from Hardy Coffee Company, Sweet Magnolias bake shop and The Tea Smith. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place this morning.
Parking Garage Opens in Blackstone District
The City of Omaha has opened a new parking garage inside the 37 West Farnam building at 37th & Farnam Street. The 9-story building includes a city-owned, open-to-the-public garage on the first four levels and apartments on the top five levels. The building has street-level retail space. While the parking garage is open, the retail and residential space is still under construction.

Nordstrom Rack Opens at Village Pointe
Nordstrom Rack has officially opened its first Nebraska store at Village Pointe in a 30,000 sq. ft. space formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond at 255 North 170th Street. The Seattle-based, off-price, department store’s nearest existing locations are in Des Moines, Iowa as well as the Kansas City and Minneapolis areas. - Nicole Buntgen

EPIC for Girls, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing inequities in sports for girls of color, has relocated to the College of Saint Mary campus near 72nd & Mercy Road. Deviled Egg Co. Closing December 1st
Deviled Egg Co. announced it will not renew its lease at 18111 Q Street and has switched to carry-out orders only until its closure on December 1. The company’s other locations in Denison, Tex. and McKinney, Tex., will remain open. Deviled Egg started as a delivery service in 2017 before opening its first brick-and-mortar store in Omaha in 2021. - Nicole Buntgen
Cilantro’s Mexican Bar & Grill Moving to Oakview
Cilantro’s Mexican Bar & Grill plans to close its location at 14440 F Street on October 27th. A replacement location is expected to open by the end of the year at 3309 Oakview Drive, Suite 102. That’s in a small retail building immediately southeast of Oakview Mall.
Lincoln Taekwondo Gym Expands to Omaha
Master Lee’s Taekwondo has opened at 3510 North 167th Circle. That’s just south of a Rocket Car Wash at 168th & West Maple Road. The business, which has an existing location in Lincoln, offers classes for children ages 4 and up as well as adults of all ages.
Wingstop Plans to Open Near 180th & Q
Wingstop will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting for its newest location at 17676 Welch Plaza near Hy-Vee off 180th & Q. The wing franchise has more than 1,600 locations nationwide, including seven in the Omaha area. - Nicole Buntgen
New Manufacturing Plant to Be Constructed in Gretna
Lawson Cryogenic Manufacturing & Repair plans to break ground Thursday on its first manufacturing plant at 15130 South 205th Avenue in Gretna. The site is southeast of Interstate 80 and Highway 31 on the opposite side of the interstate from Nebraska Crossing. The plant will produce cryogenic transport trailers.
Paint-and-Sip Franchise Comes to Omaha
Board & Brush will open its first Nebraska location on October 26th at 6016 Maple Street in Benson. The sip-and-paint franchise describes itself as a creative studio that combines woodworking with Do-It-Yourself projects. - Nicole Buntgen
BBQ Restaurant Swaps Bricks and Mortar for a Truck
Pulled BBQ has closed its restaurant at 11036 Elm Street in Rockbrook Village and is converting to a food-truck business model. The truck will be based at Trucks & Taps southwest of 108th & Q Street.
Taco Bell Under Construction in Coventry Development
Construction is underway for a new Taco Bell in the Coventry development near 204th & Harrison Street, just east of Children’s Hospital and south of ACX Cinema 12+. The fast-food chain operates more than 20 locations in the Greater Omaha area. - Nicole Buntgen
Boutique Store Opening at Countryside Village
Sage Grove Boutique will soon open at 8706 Countryside Plaza off 87th & Pacific. Its temporary location is at 8721 Shamrock Road, next to House of R on the opposite side of the retail strip. Council Bluffs Plans West Side Improvements
The Council Bluffs City Council approved a resolution to initiate bids on the West Broadway Extension Project. The project has been funded by a $3.5 million grant from the Iowa West Foundation. It entails landscaping, irrigation and signage improvement between 35th and 40th streets, roughly the area around the newly constructed I-29-I-480 Interchange and the western entrance to Council Bluffs. - Isaiah Ang
Sports Bar Closes in Millard
Varsity Sports Bar & Roman Coin Pizza is closing its Millard location at 145th & F Street today. Other locations at 96th & Q Street as well as 36th & HIghway 370 will remain open.
4-Story Building Planned for 16th & Locust
A developer plans to build an apartment project at 1614 Locust Street. The vacant lot is about 29,000 sq. ft. and lies just west of Chubb Food grocery store. The 51,000 sq. ft., 4-story building would have an adjacent surface parking lot. The building will have 36 units, including 19 three-bedroom units, with the remaining being a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments. Blackstone District Karaoke Bar Adds West Location
Reno’s Karaoke, a private karaoke bar in Blackstone, will open a second location inside Blue Sky Bar & Patio at 10730 Pacific Street in Regency Landing this winter. Unlike the Blackstone location, which is 21+, the new venue will be open to all ages. - Nicole Buntgen
Mochinut Plans Ribbon Cutting for First Nebraska Store
To celebrate its first store in Nebraska, Mochinut will host a ribbon cutting on November 2nd at 3605 North 147th Street, near Chipotle and First Watch. The shop recently opened and specializes in mochi donuts, a Hawaiian creation that combines American donuts with Japanese mochi. - Nicole Buntgen
Union Pacific Sponsors U.S. Speedskating
Union Pacific Railroad announced a four-year partnership with US Speedskating, the organization dedicated to supporting speed skaters from local clubs to the Olympics. Omaha-based Union Pacific is an official sponsor. The US Speedskating National Team is based in Utah, a state with long historical ties to Union Pacific and home to approximately 1,200 of the company’s employees.
Shared Venue Opens at Rockbrook Village
Corkscrew Wine & Cheese recently opened Alco-Hall, a semi-enclosed shared space between its Rockbrook Village location and Public House, a whiskey bar. The outdoor patio includes a fire pit and swings, open during Corkscrew and Public House business hours. - Nicole Buntgen
Charleston Homes Plans Subdivision at 204th & Ida
Charleston Homes is planning a residential subdivision named Indian Ridge at 204th & Ida Street. According to an Omaha Planning Board application for rezoning, there will be two phases to build out 487 single family lots throughout the 146-acre development. Phase 1 consists of 206 lots with the remaining 281 lots reserved for Phase 2. The subdivision will be north of Indian Creek Golf Club and west of Flanagan Lake. - Isaiah Ang
First Watch Opens 7th Omaha Location
First Watch has opened at 248 North 144th Street in Heartwood Preserve. The Florida-based, breakfast-and-lunch restaurant now has seven Omaha-area locations.
