Interstate 480 Closed for Weekend Construction Project
Interstate 480 is closed on the west side of downtown this weekend as workers install horizonal girders for the new Farnam Street bridge. The installation will require the freeway to be closed until no later than 6 a.m. Monday. The bridge is being rebuilt to accommodate the Omaha Streetcar and because of its advanced age. The bridge’s concrete deck is expected to be poured in June.
Anthem Opening Thursday in Former Plank Provisions Space
Flagship Restaurant Group will open Anthem, a Tex-Asian pub, this week in the former Plank Provisions restaurant at 1205 Howard Street in the Old Market. Anthem has one existing location in Austin, Tex., and is described as a “design-savvy eatery for Latin & Asian pub fare, plus tiki drinks & sake bombs.”
Unicameral Passes LB 1165 Known as “Grow the Good Life Act”
The Nebraska Legislature today passed Legislative Bill 1165, the “Grow the Good Life Act,” one of the most significant economic development packages in recent years. The bill, which passed 42-7, modernizes the state’s economic development tools by enhancing performance-based incentives, strengthening employer retention strategies, expanding flexibility for childcare support and introducing new mechanisms to attract and retain workforce talent.
SubLuna Opening First Brick-and-Mortar Location
SubLuna, an herbal wellness company, will open a 1,653 sq. ft. brick-and-mortar space at 12109 Emmet Street near Tranquility Park. The brand’s products are currently carried locally at Myrtle & Cypress Coffeehouse. SubLuna offers herbal remedies, functional beverages, electrolyte mixes and gummies. – Nicole Buntgen
Connecticut-Based Restaurant Chain Expands to Omaha
Wing It On!, a quick-serve restaurant concept, will open its first Nebraska location in Harvey Oak Plaza near 144th & West Center Road. Local owner, Bill Anderson, signed a franchise agreement last year to open three locations in Nebraska. Wing It On! serves fresh, never frozen chicken wings and sandwiches. The Waterbury, Conn.-based business has nine locations, primarily on the East Coast, with the closest in Chicago. – Isaiah Ang
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings Opens at The Yard Apartments
Bobo’s Noodles and Dumplings has opened at 812 North 14th Street in the former Session Room space at 1415 @ The Yard Apartments. The restaurant, under the same ownership as Blue Hawaii, is in a soft-opening period through April 21, offering 20 percent off all orders. – Nicole Buntgen
Casey’s General Store to Join Fareway at Valley Landing
Casey’s General Store plans to build a location in the Valley Landing development southwest of 264th & East Meigs Street in Valley. Opening is planned for a year from now. The mixed-use development is next to DC West Community Schools’ recently completed, 45-acre sports complex. Valley Landing will also be home to a Fareway grocery store, with construction beginning soon.
Omaha Named One of Top 100 Best Places to Live in 2026
Livability.com named Omaha as one of its “Top 100 Best Places to Live” in 2026. The national rankings highlight small to mid-sized cities offering a strong combination of affordability, opportunity and quality of life. The ranking is based on a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of nearly 100 data points. Omaha ranked #54. Huntsville, Ala. was number one.
Golf Galaxy Opens in L Street Marketplace
Golf Galaxy has opened at 12204 K Plaza in the former Buy Buy Baby space at L Street Marketplace, according to ACCESS Commercial. The 25,000 sq. ft. space is between World Market and ROSS Dress for Less. In addition to being a retail store, Golf Galaxy has indoor golf practice space.
National Cosmetics Retailer Signs Lease at Westroads
Westroads Mall has signed a lease with Miss A, a chain of affordable cosmetics stores geared to teenagers and young women. The store is expected to open late this year before the peak holiday shopping season. The Dallas-based retailer started in 2013 and has 80 stores in 16 states and another 27 stores in the development pipeline. The closest existing Miss A is in Wichita, Kan.
Prime Steakhouse Applies for Building Permit
Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille has filed a building permit for its planned restaurant in the Avenue One Goodlife District southeast of 192nd & West Dodge Road. The Houston-based chain of prime steakhouses will occupy a 12,000 sq. ft, 1-story, free-standing building to be constructed at 310 North 191st Street. Opening is planned for summer 2027. Perry’s has 23 existing locations in nine states with the closest existing ones in Chicago and Denver.
Midwest Laboratories Expanding to Papillion Campus
Midwest Laboratories will officially begin construction tomorrow on a new campus at the former InfoGroup building near East 1st Street & American Parkway in Papillion. Midwest Labs will occupy 120,000 sq. ft. of the 176,000 sq. ft. building with room for future expansion. The project includes an animal nutrition laboratory and will house 85 employees. The facility is expected to be operational in 2027. – Nicole Buntgen
UPS Store Opens Near Gretna Hy-Vee
The UPS Store has opened in Gretna at 18870 Oakmont Drive, Suite #8, in a retail strip just east of Hy-Vee supermarket on the north side of Highway 370. The first day of business was yesterday. Other tenants in the strip include Bisou Nail Spa, Great Clips, Club Pilates and a veterinary clinic.
NDOT Upgrading West Dodge Road & Highway 275 Intersection
The Nebraska Department of Transportation kickedoff a construction project this week at Highway 275 & West Dodge Road in the Waterloo area. The intersection will be converted to a roundabout. The intersection will be closed until completion, which is estimated to be late summer. Detours will be posted.
Ben’s Soft Pretzels Food Truck Coming to Omaha in May
Ben’s Soft Pretzels, a national pretzel franchise with both brick-and-mortar stores and food trucks, is coming to the metro area. Local franchisees Benjamin and Melissa Gaul are launching a Ben’s Soft Pretzels trailer on May 8th. It will be based in Gretna but will serve areas in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. The brand is known for Amish-inspired, jumbo soft pretzels and has an existing metro-area location inside Vala’s Pumpkin Patch.
Thrift World Opens in former ReStore Locations
Thrift World has opened two locations at 10910 Emmet Street and 1003 South 24th Street, both in former ReStore spaces operated by Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. The retailer operates eight other thrift stores across Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. – Nicole Buntgen
Wingstop Stop Opens Restaurant in Manawa Power Centre
Wingstop opened last Thursday in an end-cap bay at 3120 Manawa Centre Drive in Council Bluffs. The retail strip is part of Manawa Power Centre, southeast of Interstate 80 & South Expressway. Wingstop is a fast-casual restaurant chain, specializing in cooked-to-order Buffalo-style wings and now has 11 Omaha metro area locations.
Slick City Action Park Plans First Nebraska Location in La Vista
Slick City Action Park, “the world’s first indoor slide park,” is building its first Nebraska location as part of a 32-acre, mixed-use development northwest of Westport Parkway & West Giles Road in La Vista. The 41,000 sq. ft. building will have slides and other indoor attractions. Opening is planned for early 2027. Co-headquartered in St. Louis and Nashville, Slick City started in 2022 and has 34 locations open and 43 in development. The closest existing ones are in Minneapolis and St. Louis.
Red Door Woodfired Grill Prepares to Open Two Metro Locations
Construction is underway on Red Door Woodfired Grill at 6680 Center Street in Aksarben Village, in the former Spirit World space. The Kansas City-based concept plans to open in the second quarter of 2026. Construction has just started on a free-standing Gretna Red Door location northeast of 192nd & Highway 370. – Nicole Buntgen
Developer Plans to Renovate North Omaha Assisted Living Facility
A developer plans to bring back a former assisted living facility at 4809 Redman Avenue. The existing 1-story building will be rehabilitated, while a 100,000 sq. ft., 3-story building is constructed. The $36 million project will be called the Novalla and will have 160 apartments, split between 136 affordable units and 24 market-rate units. The Omaha Planning Board approved Tax Increment Financing for $6.3 million. Construction should start this October and be completed by October 2028. – Isaiah Ang

Nebraska Has Fourth Lowest Rate of Adults Living with Parents
Thirty-three percent of U.S. adults, ages 18 to 34, live with their parents, according to Visual Capitalist. In Nebraska, it’s 20 percent. Only three states – North Dakota (12%), Wyoming (16%) and South Dakota (18%) – are lower. The highest states are New Jersey (44%), Connecticut (41%), California (39%) and Maryland (39%). Here are some states closer to home: Iowa (22%); Kansas (23%); and Missouri (27%).
NDOT Starts Interstate 680 Widening Project South of Dodge
The Nebraska Department of Transportation has started a project to widen a 1.49-mile stretch of Interstate 680 between Frances Street on the south and West Dodge Road on the north. Completion is planned for this November. The project will add an extra lane in both directions and make it possible to expand the I-680 & West Dodge Road interchange starting in 2028.
Perfume Palace Opens Second Westroads Mall Store
Perfume Palace has opened a second location within Westroads Mall. The first location is on the mall’s upper level near the H&M store. The second one is now open on the level one across from Victoria’s Secret and PINK. Perfume Palace has several stores in Florida and a handful of them in the Midwest.
Jamaican-Style Food Truck Launching This Month
Jerk Makin Shack, a food truck inspired by traditional Jamaican cooking, plans to launch this month. The truck will operate throughout the metro area at local events, food truck gatherings and private catering opportunities. Locally owned by Shava Jackson, Jerk Makin Shack specializes in authentic Caribbean flavors, featuring jerk chicken, jerk pork, oxtails, Jamaican beef patties and coco bread.
Developer Plans Apartment Building at 76th & Pacific
Parkway Development Company plans to squeeze a 5-story, 34-unit apartment building onto a .48-acre site at 7630 Pacific Street. The property used to have a single-family residential building. The new apartment building will have 34 stalls in a first-floor parking garage. The Omaha Planning Board approved a planned unit redevelopment overlay and rezoning to accommodate the project. Parkway Development previously built the Swivel Apartments near 72nd & Dodge Street and the Centerline by 72nd & Center Street. - Isaiah Ang

Omaha Chef David Utterback of Yoshitomo and Ota has been named one of five finalists for Best Chef: Midwest in the 2026 James Beard Awards, marking his second consecutive year as a finalist. Winners will be announced June 15 in Chicago. - Nicole Buntgen
Penn Station East Coast Subs Restaurants Change Ownership
Local entrepreneurs Josh and Courtney Kenney have acquired the Omaha area locations of Penn Station East Coast Subs through their investment company, JCK Capital. Penn Station is known for grilled-to-order subs, hand-cut fries and freshly squeezed lemonade. The restaurants are located at 168th & West Center Road, 80th & Dodge Street and in Bellevue. The Kenneys are evaluating opportunities to add a fourth restaurant in Gretna within the next two years.
Omaha by Design Seeks Venue Applications for Open Omaha
Omaha by Design will host Open Omaha again this year on Saturday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Open Omaha is a one-day, all-access, city-wide open house. Featured venues are invited to show off their space to the public. Omaha by Design is now accepting venue applications HERE. Last year’s event garnered more than 10,000 venue visits.
The Breakfast Club Opening Soon in Aksarben Village
The Breakfast Club will open soon at 2121 South 67th Street in Aksarben Village, in the former Jones Bros. Cupcakes space. The Des Moines, Iowa-based breakfast concept has restaurants in Des Moines, West Des Moines and Ankeny and is currently hiring staff in Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen
New Lounge Opening Monday at Indian Creek Golf Course
Indian Creek Golf Course will open The Sand Room Monday, April 6th, on the lower level of its clubhouse near 202nd & West Maple Road. The lounge will offer food, drinks and golf simulators. The Sand Room has a “moody, speakeasy feel” and is available for walk-ins. The public golf course is open to anyone. The new lounge is part of a completely renovated clubhouse that will also include The Approach, a restaurant opening in late April on the upper level.
Creighton Mid-America Business Conditions Index Moves Up
The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, moved above growth neutral for March to its highest level since March 2025.The index, which ranges between 0 and 100 with 50.0 representing growth neutral, increased to a solid 55.6 from 54.7 in February and a much weaker 49.6 in January, according to Dr. Ernie Goss, director of Creighton’s Economic Forecasting Group.
Nonprofit Plans to Build North Omaha Grocery Store
Heart Ministry Center plans to open a grocery store on a vacant lot southeast of 26th & Lake Street. Plans call for a 24,670 sq. ft. building that would house a full-service grocery store that would function as a “social enterprise,” providing jobs and affordable groceries and supplies to a neighborhood of nearly 50,000 people. The proposed project goes before the Omaha Planning Board today.
Amazing Pizza Machine Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary
The Amazing Pizza Machine is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this month. The indoor entertainment center and restaurant is located along Millard Avenue at 13955 S Plaza. The Amazing Pizza Machine offers more than 75 items on its buffet plus go carts, bumper cars, rides and other attractions.
Food Truck Sets Up Shop in Blackstone District
M&M Beef and Steak, a new food truck, has opened for business in the Blackstone District, serving cheesesteak and Italian beef. The truck is stationed outside Jay’s Beer Garden at 3724 Farnam Street and is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. M&M is locally owned by Brian Magarro and Joel Marsh, who also owns Noli’s Pizzeria.
Omaha’s First Women-Only Membership Club Opens Tomorrow
Legacy Collective will celebrate its grand opening and ribbon cutting tomorrow – April 1 – at 9 a.m. in Regency Landing at 10730 Pacific Street. Legacy Collective is Omaha’s first exclusive women-only membership club. According to a press release, “members will enjoy curated experiences, networking opportunities and amenities tailored to elevate both personal and professional growth.”
Lincoln Company Opening Omaha Office in North Downtown
A fast growing agtech startup from Lincoln plans to open an Omaha office in the Millwork Commons District. According to a building permit, Marble Technologies will occupy a 7,400 sq. ft. space in the Mastercraft Building at 1111 North 13th Street. The Mastercraft was one of the first anchors of the burgeoning Millwork Commons District, providing flexible office and light industrial space for more than 60 businesses and organizations. – Isaiah Ang
Council Bluffs to Purchase Land for River’s Edge Playground
The Council Bluffs City Council approved a land purchase from the Iowa Department of Roads to build a destination playground near River’s Edge. The site is south of the Interstate 480 overpass, just west of the River Park by Broadmoor apartment complex. Southwest Iowa Nonprofit for Collective Impact will pay the $70,000 price tag. The property will be owned by the city. Broadmoor will donate the remaining needed land. It’s part of River’s Edge phase V, which also includes a dog park and a plaza highlighting donor contributions. – Isaiah Ang
Dingman’s Collision Center Opens Gretna Location Monday
Dingman’s Collision Center plans to open a Gretna location on March 30 at 20227 Husker Drive in a recently constructed, 20,600 sq. ft. building just north of 202nd & Highway 370. Dingman’s has four existing locations at 120th & West Maple Road, 144th & Industrial Road, Midtown Omaha and downtown Papillion.
USA TODAY Ranks Lauritzen Gardens #3 in America
Omaha’s Lauritzen Gardens placed third in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards contest for “Best Botanical Garden.” Nominees for the category were submitted by a panel of experts, and Lauritzen Gardens was selected as one of 20 finalists from a national pool of garden nominations. Public voting narrowed the field to the top 10, with voting open from February 9 through March 9. In its second year as a nominee, the garden improved to a third-place finish after ranking fifth in 2025.
Council Bluffs Ensures Equitable Access to Riverfront Attractions
As the MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower, skywalk and pier at River’s Edge near completion, the City of Council Bluffs amended the license agreement between Southwest Iowa Nonprofit for Collective Impact and The Approach, LLC. The tower will have a climbing wall, roller glide and other amenities. The Approach agreed to work with non-profit organizations to help provide access to low-income families by having access days and free passes distributed through the Council Bluffs and Omaha public libraries. – Isaiah Ang
