Mobile Golf Simulator Brings Famous Courses to Local Events
Midwest Mobile Golf has opened for business, serving the Omaha metro area. Founded by Garrett Hamilton and Chase VanWinkle, the Gretna-based company provides a golf simulator on a custom-built, truck trailer. The simulator debuted two weeks ago at the SIP Festival in Ashland. Guests can play simulated famous courses such as Pebble Beach. Because it’s mobile, the simulator is available for corporate events, fundraisers and parties.
Nebraska is the #1 State for Women in Retirement
Nebraska is the number-one state in the nation for newly retired women, according to Travel + Leisure. A study by Manhattan Mental Health Counseling ranked all 50 states on many factors including cost of living, health care, life expectancy, crime, climate and more. In addition to #1 Nebraska, several regional states made the top 10: South Dakota (#2); Iowa (#3); Kansas (#4); Wisconsin (#7); North Dakota (#8); and Wyoming (#9).
Prestigious Architecture Award Recognizes Joslyn as One of World’s Best
Prix Versailles, an architecture design award, has recognized Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha as one of the seven most beautiful new museum openings. The other winners were Grand Palais in Paris; Saka Museum in Bali, Indonesia; Audeum, in Seoul, Republic of Korea; Kuntstsllo in Kristiansand, Norway; Diriyah Art Futures in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio. Joslyn recently opened its $100+ million, 42,000 sq. ft. Rhonda & Howard Hawks Pavilion designed by renowned architecture firm Snøhetta.
Godega Market Signage Installed in Aksarben Village
Exterior signage is now in place for Godega Market, a coffee shop and convenience market, which is planning a second location in Aksarben Village. Godega is remodeling a space at 1917 South 67th Street on the ground floor of the HDR global headquarters building. The previous tenant was Zoup, which closed last year. Godega Market’s original location is at 423 South 11th Street in the Old Market.
New Barn to Replace Demolished One at Heartwood Preserve
Developers of Heartwood Preserve are planning to raise a new barn. According to a building permit, a 3,358 sq. ft. barn structure will be built in the park that is adjacent to South 144th Street and will serve as an event venue. The new barn honors the area’s heritage as Heartwood Preserve was previously the Boy’s Town west farm. – Isaiah Ang
Eyewear Store Opening in Millwork Commons Next Week
Kinkead Optical Co., an independent eyewear and sunglasses store, is opening next week at 1001 North 13th Street in Millwork Commons. The store occupies a ground-floor space on the southwest corner of the 5-story Dizzy Mule building. The recently completed Dizzy Mule complex includes both new construction and historic renovations. The upper floors have a total of 172 apartments.
Jersey Mike’s Coming to Former Tide Dry Cleaners Space
Signage is up for Jersey Mike’s Subs at 12327 West Center Road in the former Tide Dry Cleaners location. Perkins-Critser Construction is renovating the space, with interior build-out nearing completion. Tide Dry Cleaners has moved next door. First Occupants Announced for Papillion’s Tower District
We now know the first businesses planning to open in the Tower District, a 120-acre, mixed-use project on the northwest corner of 84th & Highway 370 in Papillion. Developed by Calabretto Building Group, the Tower District will be home to Starbucks Coffee, Panera Bread, Casey’s, Pinnacle Bank, AutoZone and GreenState Credit Union. The development gets its name for its proximity to Papillion’s iconic water tower.
Iowa Coffee Chain Entering the Omaha Market
Hyper Energy Bar, a small coffee and infused energy drink chain from Urbandale, Iowa, is planning to build a new location in Omaha. The company has a building permit for a location on the southwest corner of 180th & West Maple Road. The 900 sq. ft. building will have a drive-through similar to Scooters and Starbucks. The company currently has seven locations – six in the Des Moines, Iowa, metro area and one in Iowa City. – Isaiah Ang
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Opening Soon in Sorensen Park Plaza
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is opening its first Nebraska location soon at 6516 North 73rd Plaza in Sorensen Park Plaza. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based company has 574 stores and calls itself “America’s largest retailer of closeout merchandise and excess inventory. The closest existing locations are in Kansas City.
Baker’s Candies Opening Mega Store in Greenwood
Baker’s Candies will celebrate the grand opening of its factory outlet store May 23rd through 25th in Greenwood. The 14,000 sq. ft. store will offer 500 varieties of candy and snacks plus 18 flavors of Kool-Aid on tap. The Kool-Aid will be free of charge as a way to celebrate the Nebraska-born beverage. The store will also feature a 14-foot tall “talking cocoa tree” and retro candy from the past 100 years.
Omaha Supernovas Finish #1 in Pro Volleyball Attendance
The Pro Volleyball Federation released 2025 attendance numbers, and the Omaha Supernovas finished #1 for the second straight year. Over 14 home matches in 2025, the club welcomed 152,949 fans, a 32 percent increase from last season. Its 10,925 spectators per match eclipsed last season’s figure of 9,656 for a year-over-year increase of 13 percent. Omaha now has hosted 19 of the top 20 highest-attended pro volleyball matches in history. Average Supernova attendance surpasses league averages for the WNBA (9,807), PWHL (7,260) and WSL (6,713). – Cole Young
Habitat Omaha & Cobalt Credit Union Partner on Affordable Housing in Papillion
Habitat for Humanity of Omaha will break ground May 19th on its first new-build development – 30 single-family houses – in Papillion. Cobalt Credit Union has invested $7 million to help make these houses possible. Habitat Omaha is partnering with a for-profit developer, Hoppe Development, on Tallgrass, a 600-unit, mixed-income, 35-acre neighborhood inside the 440-acre Oak Leaf subdivision near 72nd & Capehart Road.
Papi’s Mexican Grill Opens Second Location in Gretna
Papi’s Mexican Grill has opened a second location at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna in the former PepperJax space. Papi’s menu includes tacos, burritos, bowls and more crafted fresh daily. The original location is in the Inner Rail Food Hall at Aksarben Village.
Census Bureau Releases Population Estimate for City of Omaha
The City of Omaha grew by 2,485 people from 2023 to 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates just released. That’s a growth rate of barely over half a percent. The population inside the city limits was 489,265 in 2024 compared to 486,780 last year. Omaha is now the 41st largest city in America just behind Kansas City (#38), Raleigh (#39) and Colorado Springs (#40). Omaha is just ahead of Miami (#42), Virginia Beach (#43) and Long Beach (#44). The Census Bureau released 2024 metro population estimates back in March, and Omaha was 1,001,010.
Stories Coffee Opening West Maple Location Monday
Stories Coffee will open its new location at 15526 Spaulding Plaza Monday morning. Located just northeast of 156th & Maple in a recently constructed building, Stories will occupy a 2,500 sq. ft. bay. Stories will share the building with Williamsburg Pizza, but interior build-out is still under way in future pizza space. Stories’ business hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The locally owned coffee chain has four existing stores.
Rural Mainstreet Economy Remains Weak
For the 20th time in the past 21 months, Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index sank below the 50.0 growth neutral reading in May, according to the monthly survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a 10-state region dependent on agriculture and/or energy. The region’s overall reading for May increased to 44.0 from April’s 40.0.
Popeyes To Open Near 168th & Maple
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen will open at 3430 North 167th Street near 168th & West Maple Road. The project, contracted by Perkins-Critser Construction, has been slightly delayed due to revisions requested by Popeyes’ corporate office. Omaha-based Eat Out Now will be the owner. Fusion Restaurant Opening in Former Curry in a Hurry Building
Flaming Bowls Teriyaki and Taco will soon open at 8303 Maple Street in the former Curry in a Hurry space. The Japanese-Mexican fusion concept will offer gyoza, flavored teas and smoothies, teriyaki bowls and queso birria tacos. A grand opening date has yet to be announced. – Nicole Buntgen
French-Inspired Steakhouse to Open in Former Mahogany Space
PIVOT Prime, a French-inspired steakhouse from Lucky Eleven Hospitality Group, will open May 23 at 13665 California Street. The menu features prime cuts, seafood and seasonal dishes like the Red Wine Aged Manhattan Steak. Buffett Fundraiser Benefits Omaha’s Stephen Center
A fundraiser led by Warren Buffett and shareholders as part of Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting has raised $1.3 million for The Stephen Center. Buffett signed 20 copies of the new book 60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway, which were auctioned off to the highest bidders. Buffett then matched the final dollar amount raised in the auction. The money will help The Stephen Center fund a new substance abuse treatment center and a housing facility for women and children. – Mark Champion
Funny Bone & Draft Cade Getting Close to Opening
Exterior signage is in place, and most of the interior build-out has been completed for the relocated Funny Bone Comedy Club, which will open soon in Miracle Hills. The 16,270 sq. ft. space will also include Draft Cade, and arcade bar and restaurant with existing locations in Kansas City; Toledo, Ohio; and Richmond, Va. Funny Bone is moving from Village Pointe. The comedy club has 15 locations in eight states.
Bellevue Good Life District Now Offering Lots for Sale
NAI NP Dodge has listed several lots for sale in Bellevue’s Good Life District at the interchange of Highways 75 & 34. Four shovel-ready, commercial lots from 6.73 to 32.65 acres are now available in the mixed-use development. The 575-acre Good Life District is anchored by Bellevue Bay, a 100,000 sq. ft. water park now under construction. When it opens in 2027, it will be the fourth-largest indoor water park in the nation with 600,000 visitors annually.
Wingstop Plans to Open in Midtown Near UNMC
Wingstop, a quick-serve restaurant that sells Buffalo wings, plans to open a new store in a Cricket Wireless building at 365 Saddle Creek Road, according to Dave Critser of Perkins-Critser Construction, which is renovating the space. Cricket will move to the back half of the building, while Wingstop will take the front part. Construction begins later this month. Wingstop has nine existing Omaha locations.
Retail Rebel Opens First Nebraska Location
Retail Rebel, a discount shopping retailer, will soon open its first Nebraska location at 8005 Blondo Street in Omaha. The store features two components—The Bins, a warehouse of hand-picked items sold at flat rates that drop daily, and The Auctions, a virtual platform where shoppers can bid on select items. Retail Rebel operates additional stores in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and soon Georgia. - Nicole Buntgen
Construction Starts on Model House at Heartland of America Park
Omaha by Design is bringing something new to the Riverfront. From June to October, visitors can tour an Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ADU, at Heartland of America Park. The ADU is currently under construction just north of the Skate Ribbon. The City of Omaha has expanded zoning regulations to allow ADU’s in more areas, including recently passing an amendment to allow them in agricultural zoned areas. ADUs create additional housing on single-family lots. Designed by Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, the Heartland Park ADU is a 600 sq. ft., one-bedroom, one-bathroom concept with two patios. – Isaiah Ang
Westroads Plans to Expand Former Younkers Space
Westroads Mall will see some big changes, according to final plat documents reviewed by the Omaha Planning Board last week. The 174,000 sq. ft. west anchor building, previously a Younkers department store, will see a 32,000 sq. ft., two-story expansion. According to the plat documents, the former Granite City building will be demolished and will be replaced with additional parking spaces. - Isaiah Ang
Salon to Open Above Coneflower Creamery in Downtown Elkhorn
RAEVA Mane Street Oasis, an eight-chair, booth-rental salon, plans to open in Olde Towne Elkhorn this June. The salon will operate in a recently constructed building at 2625 North Main Street on the second floor above the soon-to-open Coneflower Creamery. The owner is Lindsay Karella, a seasoned hairstylist and Elkhorn native.
Mouth of the South Returns to Original Ownership
Mouth of the South, a local Southern and Cajun-inspired restaurant, is now fully back under the ownership of founder Ryan Ernst. A 2017 fire destroyed its original location at 8505 North 30th Street in Florence, leading to changes in location and ownership structure. Ernst said the business has now “returned to the concept that started it all,” with a renewed focus on community, hospitality and Southern flavors. First-Ever Aksarben Crit Takes Place Next Weekend
The first-ever Aksarben Crit is coming to Aksarben Village Saturday, May 17. For the layperson, a “crit,” or “criterium,” is a bicycle race of a specified number of laps on a closed course over public roads closed to normal traffic. The event will begin near Baxter Arena at 3 p.m. with the Men’s Open. Then, a new race will start for different divisions at the top of each hour before the final event of the night at 8:15 p.m. for the Men’s Professional. Admission is free. – Cole Young
Omaha’s First Video Game & Energy Bar Opening in September
The Stamina Bar, Omaha’s first video game-themed energy bar, will open at 8713 Shamrock Road in Countryside Village. The bar is an extension of The Gamers Oasis—a video game store located just next door—and will serve energy drink-infused smoothies and beverages. Omaha is the fourth best mid-sized metro area in America for working moms in 2025, according to CoworkingCafe. The rankings were developed using 15 metrics such as the share of employed moms, childcare accessibility and affordability, work-from-home and self-employment rates, access to pediatricians, income and more.

Right at Home, an Omaha-based, in-home caregiving franchise with more than 750 locations worldwide, is celebrating its 30th anniversary during its annual conference this week at the CHI Health Center. More than 600 Right at Home national and international franchisees, office staff and corporate staff are attending.
Wounded Warriors Family Support Breaks Ground for Dunham House
Dunham House broke ground Tuesday on a 40-acre site in north Omaha for a first-of-its-kind, transformational housing initiative meant to serve combat-wounded veterans in need of long-term residential-centered care. Dunham House is being developed in collaboration with Omaha-based nonprofit Wounded Warriors Family Support. When the single-story, 27,500 sq. ft. building opens in July 2026, Dunham House will house 30 veterans who require supportive care yet seek to maintain independence. – Mark Champion
Big Grove Brewery Prepares to Open on UNMC Campus
Big Grove Brewery is just weeks away from opening its first Nebraska taproom in the recently completed Catalyst building on the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s EDGE District campus. The building was historically a steel mill. Big Grove Brewery has been working to fill 100 full- and part-time jobs this week. Big Grove started in 2013 in Solon, Iowa, and now has locations in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa.
Iowa Credit Union Plans Second Omaha Location
GreenState Credit Union will open a second Omaha branch at the northwest corner of 204th & Harrison Street in the Coventry development, near the recently opened Taco Bell. The Iowa-based credit union is also preparing to open its first Omaha location near 180th & West Maple Road. GreenState operates nearly 30 branches across Iowa, Illinois, and the Chicago area. Darland Completes Renovation of DMSi Software Office
Darland recently completed an office remodel for DMSi software at 11650 Miracle Hills Drive. This renovation involved the removal of a section of the upper floor, creating an open, two-story area with a 'floating' conference room. A custom staircase was constructed to anchor the two spaces. The project included the creation of a work café with various seating options, interactive games and beer taps. Founded in 1976 by Omaha's Baum Iron to create an inventory system, DMSi quickly pivoted to serve others in the building products industry.
Baker’s to Build New Grocery Store at 204th & Q
Baker’s plans to build a $40 million Baker’s Marketplace grocery store northwest of 204th & Q Street. At 123,000 sq. ft., this Baker’s Marketplace will be approximately 55,000 sq. ft. larger than traditional Baker’s stores. The property will include a Baker’s fuel center and space for future development. The store will employ more than 300 people. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this summer. Completion would likely be in 2026, but Baker’s will release the official construction timeline later.
Council Bluffs City Council Thwarts Redevelopment of Riverfront Golf Course
The previously reported plans to redevelop the Dodge Riverside Golf Club hit a snag last night. In April, the City of Council Bluffs released plans to redevelop the golf course into a mixed-use development with up to 3,900 residential units. While the plan was merely conceptual, it was intended to identify the potential redevelopment ahead of a vote to make the property surplus and initiate the process of possibly selling the property to a developer. In a 3-2 vote, the city council rejected the motion to make the golf course surplus property. Future proposals could be considered, but efforts to sell the property have been thwarted. – Isaiah Ang
Clarkson College Plans to Install Digital Sign on Dodge Plus Renovations
Clarkson College plans to install a large digital board on its main building at 42nd & Dodge Street. Plans call for a 4-story scrim on the northwest corner of the building. On top of it would be the college’s logo and the vertical digital board, wrapping around the corner of the building. The digital board will display information about healthcare with a goal to attract more students to healthcare careers. The college plans several other renovations, including a new entrance and welcome center.
