Lauritzen Gardens Prepares for Another Major Upgrade
Lauritzen Gardens will undergo a transformative project, according to a Facebook post AO, a local architectural firm. The Woodland Flyway will create a new entry into the main gardens. The project consists of an elevated walkway, from the Visitor and Education Center to the Garden of Memories. The walkway will allow visitors to be separated from staff and vehicles in addition to creating better views of the gardens. – Isaiah Ang
Two More Retail Businesses Coming to Gretna
The UPS Store and Great Clips plan to open next door to each other at 18870 Oakmont Drive in a recently constructed retail center just east of the “world’s largest” Hy-Vee in Gretna. The center is already home to Bisou Nail Spa.
City of Omaha Working on Celebration for Terence Crawford
The City of Omaha is putting together a “hero’s celebration” for Omaha’s own Terence “Bud” Crawford, who became the first male fighter to be undisputed champion in three weight classes in the four-belt era. The undefeated Crawford beat Canelo Alvarez Saturday night in Las Vegas. An event date will be announced soon. “Omaha is proud of Bud,” said Mayor John Ewing. “We want to show support for him and what he’s done for our city — not just representing Omaha but also sharing his success with the community and investing in young people.”
Big Grove Brewery Plans September 25th Grand Opening
Big Grove Brewery plans to hold its grand opening celebration on Thursday, September 25th. The soft opening takes place this week. The Iowa City-based tap room and restaurant is located in an 11,000 sq. ft. space inside The Catalyst, a refurbished steel factory in the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s EDGE District. Big Grove also features a 6,600 sq. ft. outdoor patio.
Retail Construction Planned for Avenue One Good Life District
The Avenue One Good Life District at 192nd & West Dodge Road appears to be getting closer to construction. Developer Jasper Stone plans to build the district’s first two retail buildings northeast of 192nd & Burke Street. One of the proposed buildings is 13,500 sq. ft., while the other is 2,834 sq. ft., according to City of Omaha planning department documents. No occupants have yet been announced for the retail buildings.
KAMP Blackstone Closes Permanently
KAMP Blackstone, a food hall and bar at 3618 Farnam Street, recently closed its doors permanently. The locally owned business had several quick-serve restaurant concepts including Hola Seoul, Taco Co., Nice Rollz and Single-Double.
Grocery Store Taking Over South Omaha Walgreens Building
Supermercado Nuestra Familia, a grocery store specializing in Hispanic food and produce, plans to open in a former Walgreens building at 2323 L Street in South Omaha, according to a City of Omaha building permit. Supermercado has four existing Omaha locations plus one coming soon to Topeka, Kan. The company’s stores are commonly 40,000 sq. ft., but the South Omaha store will be much smaller at 15,000 sq. ft. – Isaiah Ang
Major Data Center Planned for East Council Bluffs
The Council Bluffs City Council approved Tax Increment Financing for a major data center project planned for vacant land near Iowa Western Community College southwest of Interstate 80 & Highway 6. The project will be built in two phases by a global company called Edged. Each phase will include a 283,497 sq. ft. data center building. The first phase will also include a 23,200 sq. ft. administrative building. The developer’s costs are estimated to be $220 million. The city will offer up to $50 million in TIF. The first phase is to be complete no later than 2029 and the second phase no later than 2033. – Isaiah Ang
Nothing Bundt Cakes Opens in Council Bluffs
Nothing Bundt Cakes has opened at 3701 Metro Drive near Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse in Council Bluffs’ Metro Crossing center. The franchise bakery has existing metro locations at 10347 Pacific Street in One Pacific Place and 2921 South 168th Street in Omaha.
Greater Omaha Chamber Launches Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund
The Greater Omaha Chamber launched a business resiliency fund to support target small businesses during streetcar construction. The Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund will distribute about $1 million to qualifying businesses that have been most significantly impacted by utilities work to date and will be affected once rail construction begins. Funds for distribution were given to the Chamber by a donor. The first distributions started in mid-August and are intended for businesses most severely impacted in the corridor west of Turner Boulevard on Farnam Street.
Aroi Asian Cuisine Coming to Horseshoe Casino
Aroi Asian Cuisine will soon open at 2701 23rd Avenue inside Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs. The Asian-fusion restaurant combines Thai and Cajun flavors with menu items like papaya salad, shrimp spring rolls and pho with a Cajun twist. – Nicole Buntgen
Board & Bloom Coming to Miracle Hills
There are plans for a new restaurant at 645 North 114th Street in the Miracle Hills Square retail center. According to a building permit, the 1,500 sq. ft. retail bay will be remodeled for a restaurant called Bloom & Board. While not confirmed, it appears to be a charcuterie board restaurant. – Isiah Ang
Marrow Now Open in Gretna
Marrow officially opened September 2nd at 17870 Oakmont Drive in Gretna, just south of Tiburon Golf Club. The casual fine-dining restaurant offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and is under the same ownership as Timber Wood Fire Bistro, Railcar Modern American Kitchen and Pasta Amore. – Nicole Buntgen
MECA Unveils New Scoreboards Inside CHI Health Center
Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority today unveiled the new scoreboard, LED displays and ribbon boards inside the CHI Health Center arena. The center-hung scoreboard is the first wraparound board of its quality (2.5MM main video) in the nation. LED displays and video boards were upgraded throughout the arena. The entire project cost $6.5 million.
Porky Butts BBQ Resumes Catering During Temporary Closure
As of September 10, Porky Butts BBQ is serving Porky Platters, Family Platters, catering orders and bulk meat orders for two pounds minimum for pick-up at its catering office at 15475 Ruggles Street between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The restaurant remains temporarily closed for repairs and clean-up after extensive flooding damage that occurred at the beginning of August. – Nicole Buntgen
Ariat Plans Grand Opening Celebration at Nebraska Crossing
Ariat will hold a grand opening celebration this Saturday – September 13th – for its new store at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna. The 8,800 sq. ft. store opened for business last month between YETI and Athleta. Based in San Leandro, Calif., Ariat is an apparel, footwear and accessories retailer that focuses on equestrian, outdoor and work styles.
Heartwood Preserve Neighborhood to Unveil Model Houses This Weekend
The Arbour at Heartwood Preserve, an upscale neighborhood development in Heartwood Preserve, will unveil two model homes during the Metro Omaha Builders Association Street of Dreams Multi-Site Luxury Home Tour September 12-14 and 19-21. The Street of Dreams features six houses in five neighborhoods throughout the metro. The Arbour neighborhood occupies 30 acres of the 500-acre Heartwood Development, which is located west of 144th Street between West Dodge Road and Pine Street.
Baker’s Supermarket Buys Land Intended for Fleet Farm
Baker’s plans to build a 100,000 sq. ft. grocery store along the West Maple Corridor. A company affiliated with Baker’s purchased a 20-acre lot at 18303 Evans Street last month. Baker’s will occupy 13 of those acres. The seller was Fleet Farm, which had intended to build a store on the site but had a change of plans. No timeline for construction has been determined. Dillon Real Estate Company, part of Baker’s parent company Kroger, purchased the lot last month for just over $10 million. Fleet Farm had purchased the land in 2021 for $4.84 million. Baker’s has announced another new Omaha store to be built northwest of 204th & Q Street.
Good Evans Opens Third Metro Area Location
Good Evans, a breakfast-and-lunch restaurant, opened its third Omaha location last week in the former Old Chicago space on the northeast corner of 144th & West Center Road. Good Evans started in Kearney, Neb., in 2019 and currently has locations 74th & Pacific Street and 204th & West Maple Road as well as one each in Kearney and Lincoln.
UNO Enrollment Remains Mostly Steady
The University of Nebraska at Omaha reported that 14,954 students are enrolled this fall. That’s a decrease of 18 students (or 0.1%) compared to fall 2024, but student credit hour production rose by a half percent. New freshman enrollment jumped 3.9 percent, with first-generation students from that group increasing 7.3 percent year over year. UNO’s College of Education, Health and Human Sciences saw the highest percentage increase in undergraduate enrollment.

Masa Luna Tamaleria Opens in Little Bohemia
Masa Luna Tamaleria has opened in the former Muchacho's space at 1258 South 13th Street in Little Bohemia. Masa Luna is limited to customers age 21 and over. The menu includes handmade masa for tamales and al pastor tacos from the trompo. Masa Luna also offers “a progressive bar program based on additive free, sustainable agave-based spirits.” The primary owners are Carlos Cuevas and Gillian Cromwell Cuevas. Co-owners are Noah and Katie Mock, who also own Nite Owl and Fizzy’s Fountain & Liquors.
Sinkhole Rising Starts Today
Work begins today to remediate a sinkhole on the west side of 16th Street between Farnam and Harney streets. The project will last through November. The sinkhole opened last January when a garbage truck fell into an underground void while turning into an alley. Remediating the sinkhole is more complicated than simply filling it. An exposed building foundation needs to be shored up, a sewer must be repaired, and Omaha Public Power District needs to fix a duct line.
Peregrine Hotel in Downtown Plans Two New Dining Concepts
The Peregrine Hotel at 18th & Douglas Street downtown plans to launch two dining concepts in late October. They include The Perch Rooftop, which will be open on top of the building year-round, and the Gilded Feather, a full-service restaurant.
La Plaza Fiesta Opens in Westwood Plaza
La Plaza Fiesta, a Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Mexican restaurant, has opened its first Omaha location at 12405 West Center Road in the former El Vallarta space at Westwood Plaza. Known for its margaritas and scratch-made menu, the restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. – Nicole Buntgen
MCC students to compete for International Space Station research opportunity
Up to 30 Metropolitan Community College students will have the opportunity to participate in the ultimate “distance learning project” this fall. Through a partnership with the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education, teams of MCC students will design and propose spaceflight experiments, with one MCC project selected for testing by astronauts on the International Space Station. Registration is open to all MCC students, including high school students participating in MCC dual enrollment programs.
Habitat for Humanity Plans to Build at 26th & Corby
Habitat for Humanity plans to build new housing on vacant lots near 26th Street and Corby Street in north Omaha directly east of the City of Omaha’s fleet maintenance facility. Plans call for 27 housing units, consisting of single-family attached and detached homes and townhomes. Building sized range from 1,000 sq. ft., 2-bedroom homes to 1,800 sq. ft., 4-bedrooms units. The for-sale homes will have an average appraised value of $230,000. Habitat for Humanity also applied for $1.7 million in TIF to support the $7 million project. Bergman Incentives Opens New Headquarters
Bergman Incentives will celebrate a ribbon cutting for its new headquarters at 9700 J Street on September 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. The 44,000 sq. ft. space will also house fulfillment and distribution functions. Bergman Incentives provides branded merchandise and promotional items. In addition to Omaha, the company operates in Kansas City, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City.
Combined Book Store & Tattoo Studio Opening Soon
Paper Crane Books & Tattoo plans to open Saturday, September 27 at 735 North 120th Street in the Skin Deep tattoo location. The business will be combined indie bookstore and licensed tattoo-and-piercing studio.
Hawaiian Bros Opens Monday in Miracle Hills
Hawaiian Bros will open its second Omaha restaurant Monday, September 8th at 704 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. The grand opening starts at 11 a.m., and the first 100 customers in line will receive a free t-shirt and a Hawaiian Bros gift card ranging from $25-$500 (with purchase). The local Bros franchises are owned by Dean Hodges of DKPM Investment Corp. Kansas City-based Hawaiian Bros is known for its island-inspired plate lunch, which offers chicken or pork, macaroni salad, a bed of steamed rice or vegetables and Dole Soft Serve for dessert.
Baby Bob Bridge Ribbon Cutting Takes Place Next Week
The City of Omaha will hold an official, ceremonial ribbon cutting event to celebrate the opening of the $7.5 million Baby Bob bridge on September 10 at 2 p.m. The 1,100-foot bridge has been functionally open for several months now and connects North Downtown to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.
Holy Name Housing Corporation to Build at 40th & Franklin
The Omaha Planning Department approved a preliminary plat for a 28-unit subdivision east of 40th & Franklin Street. Home Name Housing Corporation plans to build 28 two-bedroom townhomes on 2.8 acres of vacant land. One duplex is planned for a smaller lot off Decatur Street, while the other units will be in 3- and 4-unit buildings. The project is adjacent to the NRD Beltline Trail. - Isaiah Ang
bb.q Chicken Opens Second Omaha Location

The Cannabis Factory Opens Store with Drive-Thru Window
The Cannabis Factory has opened at 3434 South 84th Street in the Westgate area in a building that was once the Omaha Fire Department’s hazmat facility. More recently, it was a Midwest Medical Transport Co. location. The store is open daily and includes drive-thru open 24 hours a day. the Cannabis Factory has 22 locations in Nebraska and says its “Nebraska’s number-one cannabis dispensary.”
Kansas-Based Bank to Acquire Frontier Bank of Omaha
Equity Bank of Wichita, Kan., announced today it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Omaha-based Frontier Bank, marking Equity’s entrance into the Nebraska market. Frontier has $1.4 billion in total assets and operates seven locations in eastern Nebraska. Subject to receipt of customary regulatory and member approvals and closing conditions, the merger is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Creighton Business Index Reports Shows Slight Economic Growth
For the seventh time in 2025, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, rose slightly above growth neutral in August. The index, which ranges between 0 and 100 with 50.0 representing growth neutral, climbed to 50.5 from 49.4 in July.
Downtown Tech Company Makes Office Move
QAT Global is relocating its downtown office from the twin towers of Central Park Plaza to the Capitol District. According to a building permit, QAT Global is planning to remodel space at 1100 Capitol Avenue, an office building with ground floor retail. Current office tenants include Deloitte and Private Wealth Asset Management. QAT Global is a locally grown IT company with international offices in Costa Rica and Brazil. G1fted Barbershop plans to open September 2nd in Oakview Mall. Locally owned by Wellson Yusif, the 1,300 sq. ft. barbershop will be located next to mall’s food court near JCPenney. G1fted will be open seven days a week.
