Visit Omaha Announces Douglas County Tourism Award Winners

Nearly 14,000 votes were cast in the 2026 OMA Tourism Awards, which honor tourism-related businesses in Douglas and Pottawattamie counties. According to Visit Omaha, here are the winners in Douglas County: Joslyn Art Museum for Best Attraction; Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel for Best Hotel; Big Mama’s Kitchen for Best Restaurant; and City Limits for Best Retail Business. All were first-time honorees.

Good Life Sports Bar Plans to Open in North Downtown

The Good Life Sports Bar & Grill plans to open at 1501 Mike Fahey Street in the Builders District. The North Downtown bar is currently under consideration for a liquor license. Interior build-out has started. Opening is anticipated to coincide with the College World Series. The 7,258 sq. ft. space is on the southeast corner of the building and will include a three-season, covered outdoor seating area. Good Life has five existing locations in Omaha, Papillion and Gretna.

Renovations Start inside Future Dillard’s Store at Westroads

Work has started inside the former Younker’s store at Westroads Mall. Dillard’s will relocate its Oak View Mall department store into the space when work is completed in the second half of 2027. Dillard’s is using its own in-house construction company, Arkansas-based CDI Contractors. Dillard’s will gut the space, add a 32,000 sq, ft. expansion and construct a new entrance. Once complete, the two-story store will total 207,800 sq. ft.

City Approves Streetscape Improvements for North 24th Street

The Omaha City Council approved the acquisition of land along North 24th Street. The Omaha Public Works Department will improve the land as part of a major streetscape project. The stretch of North 24th Street extends from Ohio Street to Sahler Street. Improvements include pedestrian nodes that shorten crosswalks, on-street parking, sidewalks, landscaping and signage. The project is in final design consideration. Construction is planned to start in spring 2027. – Isaiah Ang

Technology Company Moving to Regency Landing

Regency Landing northeast of Interstate 680 & Pacific Street will be home to another office tenant. According to a building permit for tenant-finish at 10730 Pacific Street, EGiS Technologies will occupy a 5,500 sq. ft. office space. EGiS is currently located at 210 Regency Parkway and provides computer and technology services. – Isaiah Ang

Bar Blaha Opens for Business in North Downtown

Bar Blaha opened last week at 721 North 14th Street in the former Zipline Brewing space in North Downtown next to the Ruth Sokolof Theater. The upscale-yet-approachable bar has 24 taps, 12 of which feature rotating craft beers. Locally owned by Oliver Blaha, Bar Blaha features a modern-industrial setting and opens at 3 p.m. daily.

Omaha Ranks #5 on Best Large Metros for Working Moms

A CoworkingCafe study has ranked Omaha as the fifth-best large U.S. metro area for working moms in 2026. The analysis reviewed metros using 14 metrics, from employment and income to childcare affordability, commute times and access to healthcare. The only metros with more than 1 million people to place ahead of Omaha were Minneapolis, Denver, St. Louis and Kansas City. Omaha has more than 83,000 working moms.

State Board Approves Turnback Financing for Union Omaha Stadium

The State of Nebraska’s Sports Arena Facility Financing Assistance Act Board this week approved turnback-tax financing for Union Omaha’s planned 6,500-seat soccer stadium in North Downtown. Union Omaha plans to build the $140 million stadium in partnership with the City of Omaha, which will own it. The site is currently a mostly vacant, former Union Pacific railyard northeast of 11th & Cuming Street. As part of the project, plans call for an adjacent mixed-use development with residential, retail and entertainment uses.

The Alibi Room Bar Coming to 90th & Arbor

Signage is up for The Alibi Room at 9001 Arbor Street in the former VIP Lounge building north of 90th & West Center Road. The cocktail lounge has not yet announced an opening date. VIP Lounge relocated to 8505 Frederick Street last summer. – Nicole Buntgen

Orel Alliance Opens Community Center at Bel Air Plaza

Orel Alliance, an Omaha nonprofit organization founded in 2024 in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, celebrated the opening of its first community center at the Bel Air Plaza near 120th & West Center Road on May 3. So far, Orel Alliance has provided more than $1.5 million in direct financial support to 2,500 Ukrainian families across the Omaha area. The new community center will house the program’s offices as well as community programming. – Mark Champion

Shoeman’s Grocery Opens in Blackstone District

Shoeman’s Grocery has opened next door to Shoeman’s Liquor & More at 3737 Farnam Street in the Blackstone District. The bodega-style, neighborhood-focused grocery store opened May 1st on the ground floor of the 9-story 37 West Farnam Building. The liquor store opened back in November. The owner, Chad Shoeman, also owns the Red Lion Lounge one block to the west.

The Only Facial Opening Second Omaha Location

The Only Facial, a top-rated facial spa, plans to open its second Omaha location Monday, May 11 at 17219 Evans Street. That’s just south of West Maple Road. Local owners Skip and Katy Joyce have an existing location at 1020 South 74th Plaza. Founded in 2017 and based in St. Louis, The Only Facial has locations in 11 states.

Research Firm Ranks Omaha as Nation’s #8 Hottest Housing Market

Among large cities, Omaha is one of the top-10 hottest housing markets in the nation, according to Construction Coverage, a San Diego-based construction research company. Here’s the top 10: 1. San Francisco; 2. San Jose, Calif.; 3. Minneapolis; 4. Virginia Beach, Va.; 5. Milwaukee; 6. Oakland, Calif.; 7. Chicago; 8. Omaha; 9. Baltimore; 10. Seattle. Among the states, Nebraska ranked No. 9. Connecticut was number one, while Texas was 50th.

Kiddie Academy Child Care Centers Break Ground in Omaha Area

Two Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care locations broke ground in the metro area last month. Kiddie Academy of Bennington will be located at 15623 Hanover Falls Drive. Kiddie Academy of Papillion is under construction at 2055 Creekside Drive. Based in Maryland, Kidde Academy has 375 locations in 40 states. Each building will be 12,900 sq. ft. Together they will serve 400 children. Kidde has an existing Omaha location at 1111 South 206 Circle.

Benson Grocery Opens on Northwest Radial Highway

Benson Grocery has opened at 5420 Northwest Radial Highway in the Benson area. The space, which was previously occupied by Hosiery Plus, is west of Hartland Bar-B-Que. The neighborhood grocery store sells food and convenience items.

Indian Creek Opens New Restaurant in Renovated Clubhouse

Indian Creek Golf Course has opened Approach, a new restaurant on the upper level of its recently renovated clubhouse near 202nd & West Maple Road. As a public golf course, Indian Creek’s clubhouse is open to everyone. Approach is a chef-driven, casual-fine dining restaurant open year-round, offering lunch, happy-hour and dinner menus.

The Buckle Opens May 11th and Nebraska Crossing

The Buckle plans to open a new store on Monday, May 11th at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna. Between May 11 and June 8, the store plans to give away several gift cards as part of its grand-opening giveaway. The Buckle is taking over the former Eddie Bauer space. Based in Kearney, Neb., The Buckle has 444 stores in 42 states.

Maharaja Indian Cuisine Opening Second Location in Papillion

Maharaja Indian Cuisine will open its second location at 8419 South 73rd Plaza in Papillion, replacing the former Miyake Sushi House space. Its original location is in Miracle Hills at 617 North 114th Street. – Nicole Buntgen

Taco Bell Renovating Harvey Oaks Location

Renovations are underway on a Taco Bell restaurant at 14554 West Center Road in Harvy Oaks Plaza. The 2,354 sq. ft. building sits on a .63-acre lot and was originally built in 1985. The restaurant is temporarily closed during the project, which includes extensive interior and exterior updates.

Crisp & Green Plans to Open Papillion Location This Sumer

Crisp & Green plans to open a third metro area location in Papillion at Midlands Place, a retail center southeast of 84th & Highway 370. The quick-serve restaurant is shooting for an August opening in a former boba tea shop. Crisp & Green’s original Omaha store is at 225 North 80th Street. The brand just opened a new store near 168th & West Center Road on April 24th. Crisp & Green has more than 45 locations nationwide.

Construction Underway on Dental Office at 168th & State

Commercial development is stretching into far northwest Omaha as several buildings are going up northeast of 168th & State Street. Heartland Dental is now constructing a 4,124 sq. ft, one-story building at 16759 Willit Street, immediately west of a recently opened McDonald’s restaurant. Based in Effingham, Ill., Heartland Dental supports 1,900 offices in 39 states.

Park Omaha Launches $1 Parking for Employees Along Streetcar Route

Park Omaha has launched a program to help employees of businesses impacted by streetcar construction. Employees can now access $1 parking sessions in two downtown garages and one surface lot in the Blackstone District. Corridor businesses must sign up through the program and validate their employees before they receive the rate. A similar program to help the general public is coming within a few weeks.

Monty’s Bar & Bottle Shop Opens Today in Old Market

Monty’s Bar & Bottle Shop opens for business today at 2 p.m. in the former Wine Beer and Spirits space at 1037 Jones Street. Operated by Charles “Monty” Carter, the neighborhood bar is on the ground level of the Old Market Lofts Building. Wine Beer and Spirits’ original location near Oak View Mall remains open. The retailer has additional stores in Fremont, Lincoln and Grand Island, Neb.

Creighton Business Conditions Index Stays Above Growth Neutral

Creighton University’s Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas under the leadership of Dr. Ernie Goss, moved above growth neutral for the third straight month, pointing to improving economic growth in manufacturing and the overall economy. The index increased to 56.0 in April from 55.6 in March. A score of 50.0 represents growth neutral.

Omaha Approved 22 Tax Increment Financing Projects in 2025

The Omaha Planning Department presented the 2025 Tax Increment Financing Report to the City Council last week as required by law. In 2025, the city approved 22 TIF projects providing $52 million in TIF loans to support $424 million in total development. The projects could create 1,600 residential units and more than 75,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. More than $6 million of the covered costs support public infrastructure improvements. – Isaiah Ang

Park Omaha Wins National Award

Park Omaha, the City of Omaha’s Parking & Mobility Division, won the 2026 International Parking and Mobility Institute’s Organization of the Year award. Criteria focus on an organization that creates a culture of excellence; embraces innovation, excellence and technology in parking, transportation and mobility; and demonstrates years of proven leadership. Park Omaha will receive the honor at a conference in June.

Masala Indian Bar and Grill Opens on Grover Street

Masala Indian Bar and Grill has opened at 7007 Grover Street inside Comfort Inn & Suites. The restaurant specializes in regional Indian cuisine with freshly ground spices and traditional clay-oven cooking. – Nicole Buntgen

Metro Community College Opens Small Business Development Center

Metropolitan Community College is hosting a ribbon cutting and open house celebrating its Small Business Development Center designation by the U.S. Small Business Administration on Wednesday, May 6. The MCC center is located at The Ashton building in Millwork Commons, and will be the second federally designated Small Business Development Center in Nebraska. – Mark Champion

“Dirty Soda” Shop Plans to Open First Nebraska Location in Former Starbucks

Another “dirty soda” shop chain appears to be opening its first location in Nebraska, this time near 72nd & Dodge Street. According to a building permit, Swig plans to take over a former Starbucks coffee shop at 219 South 72nd Street. Swig is the original “dirty soda” shop and was started in St. George, Utah. The dirty soda concept focuses on non-alcoholic beverages, primarily soda, mixed with cream, syrups or fruit. The company has around 150 locations in 16 states. Currently, the closest locations are found in Kansas City, where there are eight. – Isaiah Ang

Renovated Dairy Queen Reopens at 114th & Dodge

Dairy Queen Grill & Chill has reopened at 404 North 114th Street on the southwest corner of 114th & West Dodge Road after extensive renovations. Crews demolished the second floor and roof of the classic, barn-style Dairy Queen building last December. The ice cream shop has been converted into a contemporary, single-story, fast-food restaurant.

Developer to Break Ground Friday on 70-Acre Retail Development

The Lerner Company will break ground Friday on Gretna Crossing, a 70-acre retail development southwest of 192nd & Highway 370. Some site preparation work has already started. The development will have up to 500,000 sq. ft. of retail, restaurant and commercial space, while supporting 1,400 permanent jobs. Upon completion, Gretna Crossing is expected to generate an estimated $50 million in combined sales and property tax revenue for the City of Gretna over 10 years.

Trader Joe’s Plans to Build Store Near 192nd & West Dodge Road

A building permit has been filed for a Trader Joe’s store at 210 North 191st Street. The 13,500 sq. ft. store would be constructed on the northeast corner of 192nd & Burke Street, just south of West Dodge Road in the Avenue One Good Life District. The California-based grocery chain has an existing Omaha store at One Pacific Place. Other retailers planning to join Avenue One include West Elm, Arhaus, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Barnes & Noble and Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille.   

Ageless Skin Co. Opens New Location Near 132nd & Pacific

Ageless Skin Co. has opened at 1150 Sterling Ridge Drive southeast of 132nd & Pacific Street, relocating from its previous 96th & L Street space. The med spa also has a location in Gretna and will celebrate its seventh anniversary in May. – Nicole Buntgen

Gourmet Popcorn Shop Coming to North Omaha

Still Poppin Gourmet Popcorn will occupy a storefront in north Omaha. According to a building permit at 3207 North 30th Street, Still Poppin will open a 1,700 sq. ft. store. Known as Malcolm’s Place, the mixed-use building has 51 apartment units and ground-floor retail. Still Poppin is currently selling out of Big Mama’s Kitchen in the Highlander Accelerator building in the Seventy-Five North development. – Isaiah Ang

Baker’s Supermarket Files Building Permit for West Maple Store

Baker’s has filed a building permit for its planned 100,181 sq. ft. grocery store at 18303 Evans Street, which is southwest of 180th & West Maple Road. The building will sit on a 13-acre lot, which was originally going to be a Fleet Farm store before those plans changed. Kroger, which owns Baker’s, has not announced a construction timeline. Baker’s has another store under construction northwest of 204th & Q Street.

Kidlavie Opens Indoor Amusement Park at Oak View Mall

Kidlavie, an entertainment center for children and families, has opened in Oak View Mall. The indoor amusement park occupies a 22,000 sq. ft. space on the mall’s second level between a vacant Sears store and the former Rush Market. Geared to children ages 1 through 12, Kidlavie also has a full restaurant. The business was founded in 2022 and has another location in Mobile, Ala.

Forbes Highlights Scooter’s Coffee Founders Don & Linda Eckles of Omaha

Forbes featured Don and Linda Eckles, founders of Omaha-based Scooter’s Coffee, yesterday in an article titled, “From Coffee Kiosk to Billion-Dollar Business: How Scooter’s Became One of America’s Top Franchises.” The Eckles founded Scooter’s in 1998. The company now has 912 locations in 32 states and rang up $859 million in total sales last year. The Eckles, who remain majority owners, said they are not currently looking to sell the company, and "for now, we love being a privately held company." 

West Elm, Pottery Barn & Williams Sonoma Seek Building Permits

Three more upscale retailers have filed for permits at Avenue One, the Good Life District south of 192nd & West Dodge Road. A week after Arhaus filed, West Elm, Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma filed permits. Pottery Barn will occupy 12,500 sq. ft., and Williams Sonoma will have 5,600 sq. ft. in the same building. West Elm’s 12,500 sq. ft. store will be in the same building as Arhaus. – Isaiah Ang

Osaka Steakhouse & Sushi Bar Opening on West Maple

Osaka Steakhouse & Sushi Bar Elkhorn will open in mid-2026 at 18118 Evans Street southwest of 180th & West Maple Road. The restaurant, previously planned as Kyoto Sushi & Hibachi, will be owned by Michael Zhu and Amy Chen, who also operate the original Osaka location in La Vista. The 7,000 sq. ft. space will feature an expanded kitchen, hibachi dining and a menu similar to the La Vista restaurant. - Nicole Buntgen

Tipico Helado to Open Ice Cream Shop at Nebraska Crossing

Tipico Helado, a locally owned Mexican ice cream shop, is opening a Gretna location inside the former Cold Stone Creamery space at Nebraska Crossing. Opening is planed for May 15. Founded in 2017, Tipico Helado has existing shops in South Omaha, the Old Market, 156th & West Dodge Road and downtown Fremont.
