10 Interesting Facts about Large Employers & Our economy

Omaha is home to more than 45,000 businesses, including the headquarters of seven Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies.

It’s easy to Google and find plenty of information about businesses and our economy, but here are a few points that you might not know…

1. There currently are 1,300 employees at the Conagra Brands Omaha campus, making it the largest workforce center in the company.

2. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska recently launched the Nebraska Blue Foundation, which gives focused investments in promising programs and community initiatives across the state.

3. Union Pacific Railroad operates around the clock on more than 32,000 miles of track in 23 states transporting an average of 8 million carloads annually.

4. The Fiserv Small Business Index is a first-of-its-kind indicator for assessing the performance of small businesses in the United States, using insights data from the millions of payments it processes.

5. International trade in Nebraska & Iowa sustains more than 635,000 jobs and generates more than $31 billion annually in imports and exports.

6. FNBO was recently honored by Money Magazine as the best bank in the Midwest in the category for “Best Fees,” in recognition for eliminating overdraft fees.

7. Conagra has a food production facility in Council Bluffs, which employs 800 employees making frozen meals for brands such as Healthy Choice, Marie Callender’s, Birds Eye and Banquet.

8. In addition to building a dynamic new building (slated to open in 2026), Mutual of Omaha prioritizes the well-being and growth of its workforce, garnering recent accolades such as the Great Place to Work-Certified TM Company (July 2023-July 2024) and Forbes’ America’s Best Large Employers (2024).

9. About 18 percent of Union Pacific Railroad’s workforce lives and works in Nebraska.

10. Omaha has more Fortune 500 HQ than many other regional cities including Des Moines (1), Kansas City (2), Milwaukee (4), Oklahoma City (3), St. Louis (4) and Tulsa (3). Utah is the only state that doesn’t have any Fortune 500 headquarters.
