Exterior of Cattle Call in downtown Omaha

‘Cattle Call’ is Downtown Late-Night Food with Fine Dining Flair

‘Cattle Call’ opened its doors August 10th at the corner of Farnham and 16th in downtown Omaha. It was developed as a late-night food spot but has become so much more. It’s a great place to stop in, grab a bite and a cocktail. It’s also a great date night spot with a short menu that screams fine dining.

Inside is a rustic design with deep reds and blacks. When you walk in, you can immediately see into the kitchen where the chefs take great care, preparing and plating appetizers, entrees and desserts.

At the helm is executive chef Dominic Gurciullo, who’s previous experience includes working as a sous chef for V. Mertz and Dante (without the official title, as it wasn’t an official position at either restaurant during his tenure). This is Gurciollo’s first time as executive chef, and he’s off to a fantastic start as his entrees are hallmarked with experience and confidence.

Gurciullo credits his team for a big part of the Cattle Call’s success. Abraham Vidaurre is the sous chef after working with Gurciullo at Yoshimoto and V. Mertz. They have developed a memorable menu, which will change seasonally.

The Big Story

Dignataries participate in a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this week for the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s $66 million residence hall.

UNMC Breaks Ground on Student Residence Hall

University of Nebraska Medical Center leaders broke ground this week on a new, on-campus student housing facility, fulfilling a longstanding request from its biomedical graduate and health profession students.

Construction work already has begun on the $66 million, 200,000 sq. ft. residence hall that will accommodate approximately 300 students on the eastern edge of the campus. Occupancy of the 6-story facility, planned for 39th & Dewey Avenue, is expected in August 2026.

“The availability of safe, affordable housing for our students is important, especially those who come from out of state and are not familiar with the city,” said Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies. “Providing such housing is key to ensuring a seamless education for all students that enables them to thrive both academically and personally while at UNMC.”

The UNMC community was joined Monday by University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold. The former UNMC chancellor recalled the day five or six years ago when a small delegation of students stopped by his office to request on-campus housing.

Fast forward to today, he said, as “we’re here to provide high-quality, affordable, safe housing in a wonderful environment for our students.”

Gold said the facility also will house UNMC students in the Scott Scholars, a program established by the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation to prepare high-achieving medical students to serve as health care professionals in Nebraska.

“The connection, the intersection is they will be housed in a living, learning community in this beautiful facility that is about to be built,” Gold said.

See a photo album from the event.

Pranita Devaraju, fourth-year UNMC College of Medicine student and president of the UNMC Student Senate, applauded UNMC leaders for listening to students’ concerns. “This is really very near and dear for students,” Devaraju said. “Students have been asking for this for a very long time and we’re excited to have more housing on campus.”

Also in attendance for the ceremonial groundbreaking: UNMC student representatives; numerous UNMC deans, directors and vice chancellors; Lisa Roskens, CEO of Burlington Capital, which is a consultant on the project; the UNMC facilities team; Phil Covington, associate vice chancellor for student success who has been instrumental throughout the planning of the project, including the 2022 student surveys to gauge interest; Curt Witzenburg, a principal at Holland Basham, who are architects on the project; and Dan Ridder, vice president at Hausmann Construction, the general contractor on the project.

The residential facility will include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units and a “grab-and-go” food option with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as first floor meeting and study spaces open to all UNMC students, including non-tenants.

The long awaited pickleball courts at the Riverfront Parks have been further delayed. MECA continues to wait for the issuance of the permit to construct the courts. It is the third of three permits that must be issued in sequential order. The other two permits are for bleacher panels adjacent to the Missouri River flood wall and for installation of pumps underneath the I-480 Bridge. According to the notes, the RFP’s would go out immediately after the permits are issued. As early as September 18, MECA posted public notice of bids for fencing, landscaping, flatwork and lighting for the pickleball courts. Originally scheduled for late 2024, MECA now expects the courts to be open next May.

Omaha voters overwhelming approved bonds totaling $333 million in Tuesday’s election. Six bond issues were on the ballot covering street, sewer and park improvements and new equipment for police and fire departments. Additionally, a $146 million bond was approved for public facilities including new downtown police and fire stations as well as the highly anticipated CHI Convention Center expansion.

About half of the $200 million budget for the expansion will be funded by the city. Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority is raising the other half privately. MECA had already received $60 million in private funding commitments. The expansion aims to add an additional 25 meeting rooms and 94,000 sq. ft. to make the convention center more competitive in bringing conventions and other large meetings to Omaha. The bonds will not result in raised taxes.

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT

A well-deployed silence can radiate confidence, but too many professionals can’t keep their mouths shut, according to Rachel Feintzeig in the Wall Street Journal: “We struggle to sit in silence with others, and rush to fill the void during a pause in conversation. We want to prove we’re smart or get people to like us, solve the problem or just stop that deafening, awkward sound of nothing.”

As remote work has increased, so have cosmetic surgery consultations, according to The Hustle. In a 2021 survey of 335 people who’d used videoconference technology, more than 40 percent of respondents reported noticing a new aspect of their appearance that they disliked due to their use of video calls.

What’s one of the biggest negotiation mistakes you can make? Revealing your deadlines. According to SalesGravy, a tight deadline puts you under time pressure. A savvy opponent will use this to grind out a better deal from you.

Humor can help build rapport with a prospective client, but humor can be misjudged or misinterpreted. Jay Fuchs, writing for HubSpot, recommends the “Two-Second Rule.” Before sharing a joke, pause for two seconds. This allows you to assess if the timing, context and content align with your prospect’s demeanor and current emotional state. If you’re seasoned in the art of humor, this probably comes naturally to you.

Only 60 percent of sales reps meet their quotas, according to Spotio.

Wall Street: The Week in Review

Commentary by George Morgan

Views and opinions expressed herein are solely those of the author.

He is the founder of Morgan Investor Education of Omaha.

As I listen to the plethora of Wall Street mavens on CNBC ramble through the day, I find it inexplicable that they can spend hour after hour parsing every jot or tittle spewed forth from the Fed. Such minutia as, how will the Fed respond to the latest GDP, PPI, CPI, and BFD numbers? Will the next move be stay-the-course, cut 25 bases points, cut 50 basis points or whatever the next windmill tilting exercise enters the Feds wheelhouse?

Then one morning, in the midst of the CNBS drivel, the immortal worlds of Sherlock Holmes flashed before my eyes; “Elementary my dear Watson.” These words come from the Adventure of the Silver Blaze, a crime involving a stolen thoroughbred race horse that Scotland Yard devoted weeks trying to solve. Then, Sherlock Holmes arrived on the scene and solved the case in 30 seconds with the observation that the trainer did it because the stable dog didn’t bark.

Buffett made an equally profound statement during the 2017 Berkshire annual meeting when he introduced Jack Bogle to the assembled adoring masses, proclaiming that Jack “saved the investing public thousands of hours and billions of dollars by inventing the index fund.”

This year, the investment gurus of Wall Street have expended massive amounts of time and energy in the quest for outstanding returns and admittedly, some have been able to achieve results that exceed the historic norm. But what about the 70 million neophyte, rudimentary Americans who simply bought index funds. Disclaimer; I am only referring to those individuals who bought the three unsullied index funds, the DOW, S&P 500, and the NASDAQ. (My definition of unsullied is not tarnished by the Wall Street marketing departments on the misguided belief that they can fool Mr. Market.

Drum roll please. So far this year, the DOW is up 12.5 percent, the S&P 22.9 percent and the NASDAQ an eye-popping 23.9 percent. To put this in perspective, the historical norm for the market is 10.4 percent. Not bad for a bunch of unsophisticated know-nothings.

In a world where our cars drive themselves, and all we have to do is ask Siri for dinner reservations and a hot date, it is difficult for most Americans to accept the fact that a simple, passive, almost free index fund can outperform Wall Street’s best and brightest and their gazillion-dollar computers. But, 70 million individual investors (Most over the age of 50) understand that it’s not nice to fool Mr. Market.
