St. Cecilia Cathedral to Construct Outdoor Plaza and Garden
St. Cecilia Cathedral is embarking on a campaign to construct a welcoming outdoor plaza and memorial garden, creating new spaces for worship, fellowship and reflection while preserving the legacy of this historic landmark, according to The Catholic Voice.
The $8.2 million project fulfills the original vision of renowned architect and designer Thomas Rogers Kimball, who died in 1934 and did not live to see the cathedral’s completion.
Kimball’s original design included an extension to the west façade to create an embracing and welcoming space in response to the westward expansion of the city at the time. Today, the cathedral community seeks to realize Kimball’s plan through the “Complete the Vision” campaign.
The project has raised approximately $3.1 million toward the overall goal. Construction may begin as early as this summer with the accessibility ramp, plaza, streetscape and garden, as funds become available. The designer is Leo A. Daly.
