Stories Coffee Closes Midtown Crossing Shop

Stories Coffee Company closed its Midtown location at 3201 Farnam Street on October 20. The local coffee shop plans to open a new location near 156th and Maple, behind Walgreens, with an anticipated opening in early 2025. – Nicole Buntgen

Construction Starting Soon on Home for Combat Veterans

Construction is expected to begin next year on The Dunham House, a 27,000 sq. ft. residence that will house 30 combat-wounded veterans from Nebraska and around the country, according to KMTV. The facility will sit on an 8-acre property near 60th & Craig Streets in north Omaha. Opening is planned for Memorial Day of 2026.

Wall Street Journal Features Upscale Omaha Neighborhoods

The Wall Street Journal featured Omaha’s upscale housing market this week in an article titled, “What Makes Omaha Different from Other Million-Dollar Housing Markets.” The article discussed how Omaha’s upscale houses are so affordable compared to most larger markets. Featured neighborhoods included Fairacres, Linden Estates and Regency-District 66.

Omaha’s Largest Indoor Play Park Opening Soon

Kipp (Kids Indoor Play Park) is opening soon at 14445 West Center Road Suite 101 and connected to VASA Fitness. Set to be Omaha’s largest indoor play park, Kipp will feature trampolines, zip lines, and a parent lounge with coffee and workspace. Omaha Startup Focuses on Women Entrepreneurs

Megan Hale, a former psychotherapist turned business strategist, has founded Dream Money, a new fintech company set to launch next spring. The Omaha-based startup has received a $75,000 Nebraska Innovation Fund Prototype Grant. Dream Money’s software app is designed “to transform how women and other underserved entrepreneurs manage, strategize and connect with their finances.”

Construction Starts on Tommy’s Car Wash

Construction has gone vertical on a Tommy’s Express Car Wash location northeast of 204th & Q Street. The construction site is just south of an existing McDonald’s restaurant. Michigan-based Tommy’s has four existing Omaha-area locations.

Omaha by Design Announces Winners of Duplex by Design

Omaha by Design announced the results of Duplex by Design, an AARP-funded competition for age-accessible and affordable duplex home designs. Winning entries were selected by a multi-disciplinary jury with expertise in accessibility, architecture and community development. The following designs were selected based on how they successfully responded to the goals of the competition: First Place: Mod_RAD | Holland Basham Architects; Second Place: Duplex+ | Actual Architecture; Third Place: Access Homes | Oscar Avila.

Brownie Bar Moves to New Location

The Brownie Bar Bakery has moved to 10922 Prairie Brook Road, which is just across the street from their previous location and next to Corkscrew in Rockbrook Village.

Skate Ribbon Transitioning to Ice

Despite the nice fall temperatures, the Skate Ribbon at Heartland of America Park will soon transition for the winter season. This Sunday will mark the last day for roller skating. The Riverfront’s social media pages will announce the official opening date for ice skating and details on how to reserve your spot on the ice when its ready to open.

Modern Love Closing Next Summer

After more than 10 years in Midtown, Modern Love announced it will not renew its lease at 3157 Farnam Street when it expires in summer 2025. The vegan comfort food restaurant said it hopes to reopen in a smaller concept in the future. – Nicole Buntgen

Alchemy Salon Studios Opening This Month

Alchemy Salon Studios, a women-owned salon suite business, will open later this month at 17925 Barker Court in the same building as MiBöca Dentistry near Hy-Vee off 180th & Pacific. Wingstop Opens Tuesday at 180th & Q

Wingstop will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting this Tuesday for it’s new location at 17676 Welch Plaza. That’s between Javi’s Tacos and Sunrize Donuts northeast of 180th & Q Street. The Addison, Texas-based wing franchise has more than 1,600 locations nationwide, including seven in the Omaha area.

Mexican Ice Cream Shop Opens Third Location

Tipico Helado, a Mexican ice cream shop, has opened its third Nebraska location at 15623 West Dodge Road. Other locations include 5210 South 21st Street and 453 North Main Street in Fremont. The shop offers more than 50 unique flavors, from ice cream bars dipped in coconut flakes to specialty scoops infused with candy, chamoy, tajin, sweet cream, and more. – Nicole Buntgen

Werner Enterprises, Inc. has been recognized as a 2024 “Top Food Chain Provider” by Food Chain Digest, the official magazine of Food Shippers of America. This marks the third consecutive year Werner has been named to this list of 25, which highlights third-party logistics companies, freight brokers, motor carriers, rail/intermodal and maritime companies excelling in capabilities and service to food shippers.

Shadow Lake Town Center Hosting Holiday Event

Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion will host its 17th Annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade on Wednesday, November 27th. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., participants will enjoy a parade followed by Santa performing the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree in the center of Main Street. There will be a Firework show sponsored by The Salvation Army Kroc Center, which will be kicking off its Red Kettle Campaign that evening.

Legacy Chophouse opens today in the former Jams restaurant location at 17070 Wright Street in the Legacy development.  One of the new restaurant’s owners is Daryl Leise, former manager of The Drover. The menu includes classic steakhouse entrees, several seafood items and a full salad bar.

Thai and Lao Restaurant Opens in Bellevue

Sabaidee Thai Lao Cuisine, a family-owned Thai and Lao restaurant, recently opened at 4102 Twin Creek Drive near 42nd & Highway 370 in Bellevue. The menu includes traditional dishes like Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles, Thai and Lao variations of Papaya Salad, and other offerings like Ground Pork Sausage, spicy Laab, savory curries, and Mango Sweet Rice. – Nicole Buntgen

Auto Body Shop Under Construction at 72nd & Cornhusker

Construction has started on Caliber Collision, a body shop just east of Brakes Plus on the southeast corner of 72nd & Cornhusker Road in Papillon. New Iteration of Rivera’s on Target for Winter Opening

Santoro Mexican Restaurant is set to open in the next 11 weeks in a 2,409 sq. ft. space on the east end of the 8601 Dodge Street building. The highly anticipated restaurant is owned and operated by Jesus Rivera, who ran the former Rivera’s Mexican Food restaurant near 120th & Blondo Street. Via Farina Opening Second Location Tomorrow

Via Farina will open its second location November 8th at 10730 Pacific Street in Regency Landing next to Twisted Cork. The new space will serve as a production hub for both the Regency and Little Italy locations, featuring an open kitchen, a “pasta lab” for in-house pasta making, and a charcuterie island. A patio is planned for spring 2025. The original Via Farina is in Little Italy at 1108 South 10th Street. – Nicole Buntgen

MECA Delays Pickleball Court Construction

The long awaited pickleball courts at the Riverfront Parks have been further delayed. MECA continues to wait for the issuance of the permit to construct the courts. It is the third of three permits that must be issued in sequential order. The other two permits are for bleacher panels adjacent to the Missouri River flood wall and for installation of pumps underneath the I-480 Bridge. According to the notes, the RFP’s would go out immediately after the permits are issued. As early as September 18, MECA posted public notice of bids for fencing, landscaping, flatwork and lighting for the pickleball courts. Originally scheduled for late 2024, MECA now expects the courts to be open next May. – Isaiah Ang

Sephora Replacing Eddie Bauer at One Pacific Place

Sephora, a national make-up and beauty store, has a permit to renovate the former Eddie Bauer space at One Pacific Place. The standalone store will be the second of its kind in Omaha – other stores are located within Kohl’s department stores. Sephora’s other standalone store is at Village Pointe. According to the permit, the renovation includes more than 5,300 sq. ft. of interior and exterior work. – Isaiah Ang

Omaha Voters Pass All Six Bond Issues

Omaha voters passed all six bond issues on yesterday’s ballot, including one for $146 million in public facilities bond that would help expand the CHI Health Center Omaha’s convention and meeting space. The bond issues also covered public safety, streets, infrastructure improvements and parks.

Drury Hotels Targets Downtown Omaha for Expansion

Drury Development Corporation, part of St. Louis-based Drury Hotels, recently purchased a half city block at 322 South 10th Street in the Old Market. The 34,848 sq. ft. parcel is currently a surface parking lot on the northwest corner of 10th & Harney Street. The purchase price was a stunning $179.35 per square foot. The property was listed for sale by Justin Spooner and Michael Miller of Colliers. Drury has more than 150 locations in 26 states. The hotel chain does not currently operate in Nebraska but has an 8-story, 252-room hotel under construction in downtown Lincoln.

Redline Athletics Opening First Nebraska Location Next Week

Redline Athletics will open its first Nebraska or Iowa location Monday, November 11th at 4 p.m. at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. Redline offers speed, agility and strength training for 8-to-18-year-olds customized for every sport. The facility is located northeast of 180th & Highway 370 and will have two batting cages plus a pitching machine. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based company has locations in 23 states. The closest exiting ones are in Kansas City and North Sioux City, S.D.

New Office Building Completed in Elkhorn

Cutchall Management Company has completed construction of Skyline Landing, a 1-story, 11,180 sq. ft. office building at 1630 North Main Street in the Elkhorn area, according to Lee & Associates, which has the building listed for sale and lease. Office sizes range from 1,565 to 11,180 sq. ft.

Rally Coffee Co. Plans Second Location in Gretna

Rally Coffee Co. is opening a second location at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. That’s just north of Highway 370 in the same newly constructed retail strip where Net Par recently opened. Interior build-out is well underway. Rally Coffee’s current location is at 749 North 14th Street in North Downtown.

Omaha & Council Bluffs Team Up for Urban E-Scooters

Council Bluffs and Omaha are working together to provide e-scooter transportation in the urban core. The Omaha City Council approved an interlocal agreement with its Iowa neighbor that formalizes the cities’ relationship and defines responsibilities in managing a regional e-scooter program. Council Bluffs agreed to allow use of e-scooters through the program already established in Omaha, whose current partner is Lime. E scooters serve as an important last-mile, micro-transit option within an overall mobility plan. The initial term is one year, but there is an option to renew up to 10 years. – Isaiah Ang

Bellevue Bay Water Park Set to Break Ground in March

Groundbreaking for the $60 million Bellevue Bay Water Park is now expected to take place in March instead of this fall, according to KMTV. Completion is still planned for late 2026. The major tourist attraction will be located at the Kennedy Freeway & Platteview Road.

Local Beer, Patio & Kitchen Closing Village Pointe Location

Local Beer, Patio & Kitchen will not renew its Village Pointe lease at 17304 Davenport Street due to rising operating costs, with plans to close in early December. An exact date will be announced soon. The Millard location at 4909 South 135th Street will remain open. – Nicole Buntgen

SweetBeans Coffee Plans Grand Opening

SweetBeans Coffee will host a grand opening November 14th at 18960 Edna Street near 192nd & Harrison. The shop will feature gluten-free, sugar-free, non-dairy and organic options. Metro Building New Bus Shelters Along 30th Street

METRO is building new bus shelters on the 30th Street corridor. The Omaha City Council approved an amendment to a lease agreement with the transit authority to allow three new bus shelters near the intersections of Bondesson and Hanover streets as well as Curtis Avenue. The agreement allows METRO to build bus shelters on city-owned property. Increasing the number of bus shelters is one component of METRONext, a master plan outlining future improvements to public transit throughout the metro. – Isaiah Ang

Thai & Boba Tea Concept Opens November 5th

Sip and Spice, a new Thai and boba tea concept, will host a grand opening on Tuesday, November 5th at 6610 South 168th Street, near Pickleman’s and Skyybox Grill & Bar near 168th & Harrison. – Nicole Buntgen

Scissors and Scotch Coming to West Maple Corridor

Scissors and Scotch, a chain of men’s barber shops that include a cocktail, coffee or cold one with every haircut, will open next year at 17205 Evan St in Whispering Ridge. Perkins-Critser Construction will begin building out the space in a few weeks.

New Development Planned Near Elkhorn South HS

Elkhorn Center, a 72-acre, mixed-use district, is planned south of Elkhorn South High School. The development would include a mix of light industrial, retail and multifamily buildings. Light industrial appears to the predominant use with the plans calling for 180,000 sq. ft. spread over eight buildings, including six smaller 16,000 sq. ft. buildings. Retail development would total nearly 120,000 sq. ft. The residential component would be a 144-unit “apartminium” development. “Apartminiums” are rental units that boast condominium amenities, such as private entrances and garages. - Isaiah Ang

Baby Blue Sushi Expanding Restaurant Space

Baby Blue Sushi Sake Grill at 16939 Wright Plaza is temporarily closed for an expansion project. The popular restaurant in the Shops of Legacy is taking over the 2,000 sq. ft. bay next door. Blue plans to be open before Thanksgiving. The restaurant is one of many concepts from Omaha-based Flagship Restaurant Group.

Total Wine Opens at Aksarben

Total Wine opened its first Nebraska or Iowa store yesterday in a former Bed Bath & Beyond space in The Shoppes at Aksarben southeast of 72nd & Pacific Street. The Maryland-based company has hundreds of stores in approximately 28 states. The closest previously existing stores are in Kansas City and Minneapolis.

Manufacturing Index Turns Positive Even as Job Losses Continue

Creighton University’s Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, climbed slightly above the 50.0 growth neutral threshold. The October index rose to 51.1 from 48.1 in September. The October employment index sank to 44.2 from September’s 44.3. Despite falling manufacturing employment, approximately 11.1 percent of supply managers named labor shortages as their firm’s top threat to business operations in the months ahead.
