Spirit World Closing After 50 Years in Business

After 50 years in business, Spirit World will close its Aksarben location at 6680 Center Street in early 2025. The family-owned wine and spirits store will continue serving customers through mid-January. Spirit World’s bar will remain open until further notice, and loyalty points must be redeemed by December 24. Gift cards will expire after the closure. – Nicole Buntgen

Google Invests Nearly $1 Billion in Nebraska This Year

Google has invested $930 million in Nebraska in 2024. That large capital investment has gone towards projects such as the under-construction Lincoln data center and a new Omaha-area data center near 120th & State Street. The latter is operational. During Monday’s announcement, Google also revealed that it provided a $250,000 grant to the University of Nebraska system for artificial intelligence research. Google has made similar grants to Creighton University and Lincoln Public Schools. – Isaiah Ang

Gambino’s Pizza Opening in Old Lo Sole Mio Banquet Hall

Gambino’s Pizza plans to open a restaurant in the former Lo Sole Mio banquet hall at 3018 South 32nd Avenue. The building has been divided into a handful of spaces since Lo Sole Mio closed. Before moving to North Downtown, Ellie’s Chinchorro Caribbean Bistro had operated in the building. Gambino’s is also working on a new location in Gretna. Gambino’s has 44 locations in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Existing Nebraska locations are in Fremont, Kearney and North Bend.

Lockwood Development Plans Council Bluffs Apartment Complex

Lockwood Development of Omaha plans to build a $58 million apartment complex on a 6.45-acre site at 30th Street and 2nd Avenue in Council Bluffs. Plans call for 264 apartments in four, 4-story buildings done in three phases. The entire project is scheduled for completion in December 2027. – Isaiah Ang

New Occupant at Former Saddle Creek Breakfast Club

Blue Line Coffee will open Green Line Cafe, a new concept at 1540 North Saddle Creek Road in the former Saddle Creek Breakfast Club location. The eatery will serve breakfast, lunch and grab-and-go items. An opening date has yet to be announced. Blue Line’s existing location is in Dundee at 4924 Underwood Avenue. – Nicole Buntgen

Jersey Mike’s Taking Over Former Tide Dry Cleaner Space

Jersey Mike’s Subs is taking over the former Tide Dry Cleaners’ space at 12327 West Center Road, according to Perkins-Critser Construction, which is renovating the space. Interior build-out will begin soon. Tide Dry Cleaners has moved next door.

King of Kings Church Expands to Fremont with Merger

King of Kings, a Lutheran church in southwest Omaha, will merge with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont. Starting this spring, Good Shepherd will officially re-launch as King of Kings Fremont. Founded in 1962, King of King’s main location is at 11615 I Street and has a northwest Omaha campus at 15656 Fort Street. The congregation has more than 3,000 members.

Local Restaurant Leases Former Blackstone Meatball Space

Charred Burger + Bar plans to open a third metro location in the former Blackstone Meatball space at 18101 Chicago Street. That’s just southwest of 180th & West Dodge Road. Both Blackstone Meatball locations closed earlier this fall. Charred Burger + Bar has existing locations in Sterling Ridge southeast of 132nd Street and Southport West near Cabela’s in La Vista as well as one in Lincoln.

Wienerschnitzel Now Hiring for First Omaha Location

Wienerschnitzel, the popular California-based hotdog chain, is now hiring for its first Nebraska/Iowa location. The space is under construction in MH Landing northeast of 72nd & Grover Street. Wienerschnitzel will share the building with Salty Dog, which has an existing location in Council Bluffs. Both Salty Dog and Wienerschnitzel are expected to open by the end of the year.

Westwood Plaza Nail Salon Rebrands

Blue Moon Nails, located at 2720 South 123rd Court in Westwood Plaza, has rebranded from Nail Nirvana Beauty Spa under new ownership. Originally opened as Nail Nirvana in July, the salon transitioned and reopened under its new name in late September. – Nicole Buntgen

Rural Economy Finally Picking Up

For the first time since July 2023, Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index rose above growth neutral, according to the November survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a 10-state region dependent on agriculture and/or energy. November’s overall reading climbed to 50.2 from October’s very weak 35.2. It was the highest reading since July of last year. The index ranges between 0 and 100, with 50.0 representing growth neutral.

Specialty Store Opening in Modern Work

Evodia Fragrances will host a ribbon-cutting and grand opening for its first storefront on December 7 inside Modern Work Suites & Studios at 8790 F St, Suite 222. The Omaha-based company specializes in personalized fragrances, custom scents, and consultations to create aromas that evoke memory, mood, and connection. – Nicole Buntgen

Texas-Style BBQ Opens at Inner Rail Food Hall

Romance BBQ, a Texas-style barbecue concept, has opened at Inner Rail Food Hall at 1911 South 67th Street in Aksarben Village. The menu features house-made offerings like smoked brisket, Glizzy Sandwiches, kimchi and a “by the pound” selection. – Nicole Buntgen

Eppley Officials Expect Thanksgiving Travel to Exceed Last Year

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is one of the biggest travel periods of the year. The Omaha Airport Authority expects approximately 185,800 travelers to go through Eppley Airfield during the next week, approximately 2.7 percent more than last year. Eppley’s three busiest days this Thanksgiving season are expected to be, in order: Sunday, December 1; Tuesday, November 26; and Wednesday, November 27.

Ziggi’s Coffee Opens Today at 201st & Q

Ziggi’s Coffee opened its first Omaha location today at 5:00 a.m. at 5102 South 201st Street. The 865 sq. ft. coffee shop is owned by first-time franchisee Lindsay Kroger. Denver-based Ziggi’s Coffee has 101 locations in 20 states including existing ones in Lincoln and Fairbury, Neb.

Church’s Chicken Replacing Godfather’s on 90th Street

Church’s Texas Chicken plans to open a second metro area location at 2310 North 90th Street, where a former Godfather’s Pizza was recently demolished. Church’s will build a 1,700 sq. ft., free-standing building with a drive-thru. Church’s currently operates a location at 4042 North 168th Street in northwest Omaha.

Dog Park Opens in Council Bluffs

The City of Council Bluffs opened the 1.2-acre Valley View Dog Park last week at 1300 Franklin Avenue. The park includes two secure, off-leash areas – one for large dogs (about 0.9 acres), and a smaller, 0.25-acre area for small breeds. Daily hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Rathskeller Bier Haus Appears to Be Reopening

Rathskeller Bier Haus, a popular German-inspired restaurant located at 4524 Farnam Street, may soon reopen under new ownership after closing in October 2023. A recent post on the restaurant’s Facebook page hinted at the announcement, with further details promised on November 30. – Nicole Buntgen

Hotel & Mixed-Use Building Planned for 132nd & Pacific

A multifamily apartment building and a hotel may soon grace the southeast corner of 132nd & Pacific Street corner at Sterling Ridge. Developers hope to amend an existing development agreement to build a 5-story, 145-room hotel right on the corner. A 6-story, 250-unit apartment building is planned next to the hotel. Four stories of residential units will be built on a 2-story podium with parking garage space and ground floor retail. The apartment building will have 12,000 sq. ft. of retail and 14,000 sq. ft. of restaurant space. An attached parking analysis indicates that the restaurant user will be the national steakhouse chain Ruth’s Chris. – Isaiah Ang

5-Story Building Planned in Council Bluffs’ River’s Edge Development

The Council Bluffs City Council this week accepted a proposal from Broadmoor Development for River’s Edge, Block 1. The 1.72-acre parcel is located east of the Pavilion and has remained vacant while surrounding lots have been developed. The city has been trying, unsuccessfully, to land a project that would have an assessment of at least $32 million. This most recent Request for Proposal was the third. Broadmoor’s $24.5 million project was the only proposal. Broadmoor plans to build a 91-unit, 5-story apartment building. The building will have two levels of indoor parking – one underground. Broadmoor has already completed 229 apartment units at River’s Edge, with an additional 48 under construction. Completion is planned for spring 2028. – Isaiah Ang

City Studies Possible Changes to Streets in Urban Core

The Omaha Public Works Department is working on the Urban Core Street Reconfiguration Study, which incorporates the area from Saddle Creek Road to the Missouri River and Cuming Street to Leavenworth Street. The study will evaluate the street network, identify recommended changes and develop plans and timelines to implement the changes. Goals include improving safety for all modes of transit, increasing multi-modal connectivity and helping obtain funding for future projects. Possible infrastructural changes might include converting one-way streets to two-way streets, road diets and adding bike lanes. The study started last May and will conclude in May 2025. – Isaiah Ang

Eppley Adding Nonstop Flights to Sarasota, Fla.

The Omaha Airport Authority announced today that Allegiant will offer seasonal nonstop service from Eppley Airfield to Sarasota, Fla. starting February 14th. Allegiant currently offers nonstop service from Eppley to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando (Sanford), Phoenix/Mesa and several cities in Florida.

Old Mill Apartment Project Planned Next to Charles Schwab Building

A developer plans to build multifamily buildings in the Old Mill area at 10842 and 10826 Farnam Drive. Currently, there are two, 2-story office buildings. Sandwiched between the office buildings is a 4-story, 383-stall parking garage. The garage will remain, but the office buildings will be razed, and in their place, the 4-story apartment buildings will be constructed. The development will have outdoor pickleball courts, additional surface parking and up to 50 car chargers in the garage, expandable to 100. The two buildings will total 327 units with a mix of one-to-three-bedroom apartments. – Isaiah Ang

Is Ruth’s Chris Steak House Coming to 132nd & Pacific?

Ruth’s Chris Steak House might be coming to the Sterling Ridge development southeast of 132nd & Pacific Street. An amendment to a development agreement submitted to the Omaha Planning Board proposes a 6-story apartment building with ground-floor retail. The documentation shows space for a 13,543 sq. ft. Ruth’s Chris restaurant with seating for 380 diners. The closest existing Ruth’s Chris is in West Des Moines, Iowa. Kansas City once had a location, but it closed several years ago. - Isaiah Ang

Arby’s Under Construction in Gretna

Construction is underway on a future Arby’s restaurant building at 196th & Oakmont Drive in Gretna. That’s part of the Gretna Landing development northwest of 192nd & Highway 370. The building is fully enclosed. It will sit on a one-acre pad site in front of a planned Fleet Farm store. Gretna has an existing Arby’s location at 11310 Wickersham Boulevard.

Temporary Street Closure Downtown

Starting Wednesday, December 20th, 8th Street between Farnam and Douglas streets will be temporarily closed to traffic, according to The Riverfront newsletter. The closure will remain in effect through the afternoon of Friday, December 22nd.

Bellevue Church Plans $8 Million Expansion

Thanksgiving Church is planning an $8 million expansion and renovation of their facilities on the southwest corner of 36th & Highway 370 in Bellevue. Groundbreaking will take place Sunday, November 24th. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months.

ALDI Store Under Construction in Gretna

Construction is underway on an ALDI grocery store northwest of 192nd & Highway 370. It’s part of the Gretna Landing development. Other retailers either open or coming soon to the development include Fleet Farm, Chase Bank, Arby’s, Starbuck’s Coffee, Walgreen’s, McDonald’s, Scooter’s and Centris Credit Union.

Vala’s Planning a Thanksgiving Pop-Up Store

Vala’s Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard will host its annual Thanksgiving Market on November 26–27 in the Exit Barn. The pop-up will feature hard cider samplings, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and fall treats available for preorder or purchase day of. Peter Kiewit Foundation Plans to Spend $480 Million by 2030

The Peter Kiewit Foundation, one of Omaha’s prodigious philanthropic donors, plans to spend $480 million by 2030 to wind down the organization. According to the Omaha World Herald, the foundation has historically spent $25 to $50 million, but the current plan may lead to even larger investments in the Omaha community. The foundation has provided almost $1 billionto a variety of projects, local non-profits and the University of Nebraska system. The foundation donated $55 million to The Riverfront Parks project. With over $225 million donated to support projects in the Urban Core, it’s anticipated that the foundation will make additional investments in projects that will continue the downtown area’s transformation. – Isaiah Ang

30Hop Opening December 6th in Heartwood Preserve

30hop will officially open its first Nebraska location on December 6th at 114 North 145th Street in Heartwood Preserve. The bar and grill has additional locations in Ankeny, Coralville and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. - Nicole Buntgen

Physical Therapy Practice Opens in La Vista

Doctors of Physical Therapy opened its third location at 8124 South 84th Street at Brentwood Square in La Vista on November 2nd. The business has existing locations in Millard and Fremont. Doctors of Physical Therapy “provides personalized care for injuries and pain for all ages and all insurance types.”

Ribbon Cutting in the Blackstone District

Avant-Garde Wealth Partners celebrated a grand opening and ribbon cutting this week, in conjunction with the Greater Omaha Chamber, at its new location in the Historic Danish Brotherhood Building at 3717 Harney Street in the Blackstone District.

Dundee Restaurant Expands Offerings

Ooh De Lally has expanded its weekly offering to include a Sunday brunch buffet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This brunch takes place every Sunday, and includes things like Picanha Steak, Shakshuka, Mac & Cheese, a full bagel and pastries spread and more. - Nicole Buntgen

Omaha Entertainment Company Expands to Iowa

The Fat Putter plans to open at the end of November at 713 Walnut Street in Des Moines, Iowa. The 11,600 sq. ft. space will be modeled after the original downtown Omaha location with different themed holes, according to The Des Moines Register. Lincoln Retailer Opens First Omaha Store

Comfort Made Mattress Factory’s first Omaha location is now open at 14941 Evans Plaza. That’s in a retail strip along the souths side of West Maple Road anchored by Planet Fitness. The Lincoln-based company is a custom mattress retailer.
