Food Truck to Offer Products at Brick-and-Mortar Shop

Gimme the Scoop, a locally owned Italian-ice food truck, will soon offer its products at Huskerland Popcorn at 2305 North 90th Street. Established in 2022, the dessert concept features gluten- and dairy-free flavors like mango, green apple, blue raspberry and more. – Nicole Buntgen

Coffee Shop Opening in Olde Towne Bellevue

The Light House Coffee Olde Towne will hold a grand opening on Valentine’s Day – February 14th at 119 West Mission Avenue in Bellevue. As a non-profit organization, The Light House coffee shop strives “to give back all we can to Bellevue, southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska.”

House of R Closing January 31st at Countryside

The House of R plans to close January 31 at 911 south 87th Avenue in Countryside Village. The business is a venue for events such as corporate meetings, wedding receptions and graduations.

Caddy’s Brunch Bar Opening February 3rd

Caddy’s Brunch Bar, formerly known as Caddy’s Kitchen & Cocktails, will reopen on February 3 in its original location at 103 West Broadway in Council Bluffs’ historic 100 Block. Caddy’s closed in October 2024 and is under the same ownership as The Salty Dog Bar & Grill, which operates in Council Bluffs and the recently opened Omaha location near 72nd & Grover.

Hy-Vee Closing All In-Store Wahlburger’s Restaurants

Hy-Vee plans to revert its remaining in-store Wahlburgers restaurants to their previous status as Hy-Vee Market Grilles, according to the Des Moines Register. The announcement affects 80 locations of the Iowa-based supermarket chain. Wahlburger’s was founded by actors and brothers Mark and Donnie Wahlberg with their chef brother Paul. Several Omaha-area Hy-vee stores host a Wahlburger’s but not all of them.

Bubble Tea Shop Converts to Asian Fusion Restaurant

Kawaii Tea Time, formerly Tea Time, recently rebranded its bubble tea shop into an Asian fusion restaurant. Located at 14505 West Maple Road, the New York City-based concept specializes in authentic boba tea, sushi tacos and poke bento bowls. – Nicole Buntgen

The Posh Peacock Closes Permanently Today

The Posh Peacock, a locally owned consignment furniture store, will close its doors at 12100 West Center Road in Bel Air Plaza on January 25. The store, which opened in October 2011, specializes in home furnishings and decor sourced from model homes, estate liquidations, and store close-outs.

Omaha Company Wins National Award

Bergman Incentives, an Omaha-based provider of promotional products and corporate branding solutions, has been named the 2024 Facilis Group Partner of the Year. The award was presented at the annual PPAI Expo, held in Las Vegas. The award celebrates excellence in collaboration, innovation and growth within the Facilis Group’s network of distributors.

Berkshire Hathaway Invests in Brazilian Digital Bank

Berkshire Hathaway has now sunk $750 million into Nu Holdings, a Brazilian digital bank with its own cryptocurrency platform, according to The Hustle. It’s a big change in tune; Warren Buffett denigrated digital currency as “rat poison” back in 2018.

Paradise Bakery & Café Opens at Nebraska Crossing

Paradise Bakery & Café has officially opened at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna, located in an end-cap bay near Ulta Beauty. The new location includes delivery options and a drive-thru lane. Paradise relocated from Village Pointe Shopping Center in late 2024. Most Paradise Bakeries have been converted into Panera restaurants. The only remaining location besides Omaha is in Dallas. – Nicole Buntgen

LOVB Omaha Volleyball Makes Home Debut Tonight

After two and a half weeks of pro volleyball competition, LOVB Omaha (2-0) will make its home debut tonight at Liberty First Credit Union Arena against LOVB Madison (1-2) at 7:00 p.m. Tonight will mark the first of two matches for LOVB Omaha on the weekend, with the team squaring off against LOVB Austin tomorrow evening.

Union Omaha Changes Plans for Downtown Stadium

Union Omaha released a formal statement regarding its plans to build its soccer stadium. The organization confirmed that while they are no longer pursuing the previously announced site near the Gallup campus, they are committed to building a new stadium in the downtown area. – Isaiah Ang

Future Stories Coffee Making Progress Near 156th & Maple

Stories Coffee is building out a new location at 15526 Spaulding Plaza in Northwest Omaha. According to the filed building permit, this location will be 2,500 sq. ft. They plan to open in 2025 and will share the building with Williamsburg Pizza. Stories Coffee closed the Midtown Crossing location in October 2024 but has three other locations in the Omaha area. – Isaiah Ang

Body Shop Moving into Former Kia Dealership

Shadow Lake Collision Center, a local auto body shop, will open a second location at 4040 South 84th Street in the former H+H Kia site near 84th & F. Tentative opening is set for April or May. Established in 1975 as AA Collision Repair, the business merged with Shadow Lake Collision in 2012 and currently operates at 1215 Applewood Drive in Papillion. – Nicole Buntgen

Nebraskans Spend Big on Wedding Gifts

Newlyweds expect an average of $122.50 in wedding gifts, with couples in New York expecting the highest amount ($204.60), followed by those in Connecticut ($202.40) and Nebraska ($195), according to fine jewelry brand Shane Co., which surveyed more than 3,000 Americans. But guests don’t spend what the bride and groom would prefer. The typical guest spends $113.80 on a wedding gift, with nearly half (47%) planning to spend less than $100. Men are willing to spend an average of $136.60, while women are typically budgeting $91.70.

Nebraska Named 4th Best State to Raise a Family

WalletHub named Nebraska as the fourth best state to raise a family in 2025. The top three were Massachusetts, Minnesota and North Dakota. Just behind Nebraska were New Hampshire and New York. Iowa came in at 12th. Nebraska ranked particularly high in the categories of Education & Childcare, Socio-Economics and Health & Safety.

Eppley Airfield Breaks Passenger Record in 2024

Eppley Airfield set an annual record for passenger traffic in 2024 with 5,277,326 travelers flying through the airport, according to the Omaha Airport Authority. The record-setting volume surpassed the previous record of 5,043,194 passengers set in 2018. The new milestone is a 5 percent increase over 2023 passenger totals.

Ooh De Lally Adds Lunch Service

Ooh De Lally is expanding its hours to include lunch Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ooh De Lally’s first lunch will take place this Thursday – January 23. The non-profit restaurant is located at 4916 Underwood Avenue in Dundee and offers former inmates the opportunity to train for food-service jobs.

Rural Economy Continues Negative Growth Trend

For the 16th time in the past 17 months, Creighton University’s Rural Mainstreet Index sank below the 50.0 reading in January, according to the monthly survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a 10-state region dependent on agriculture and/or energy. The region’s overall reading for January increased to a weak 42.3 from December’s 39.6. A reading of 50.0 represents growth neutral.

Chamber Prepares to Unveil Economic Plan

The Greater Omaha Chamber will unveil a three-year economic development strategy at its 2025 annual meeting on January 23rd at CHI Health Center Omaha. The plan will outline strategies to develop business as well as attract and retain talent. The last regional economic development plan was in 2018.

Omaha Neighborhood Grants Now Being Accepted

Applications for Mayor Jean Stothert’s 2025 Neighborhood Grants program are now being accepted and are due March 3. The mayor has awarded grants to Omaha neighborhood associations annually since 2014. Organizations are eligible for up to $5,000 for projects that increase public safety and crime prevention and improve quality of life. Applications are at https://mayors-office.cityofomaha.org/. Neighborhood organizations must be registered and listed in the city’s Neighborhood Directory.

Pet Store Opens Near 84th & Center

Too Many Tanks, a locally owned pet store, has opened at 8445 West Center Road. The store sells fish, reptiles and supplies. Both freshwater and saltwater aquariums are available.

Berkshire’s Next Chairman Makes Commitment to Omaha

Good news for the Omaha business community - The Wall Street Journal this week interviewed Howard Buffett, the 70-year-old son of Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. The younger Buffett will become the non-executive chairman of the $1trillion conglomerate when his father is no longer capable of running the company. Referring to the future of Berkshire’s headquarters location, Howard Buffett said, “It will never move from Omaha, Nebraska.”

Waybridge Clinics Expanding into New Market

Waybridge Ketamine Clinics is opening a second location in Nashville, Tenn. in the Green Hills Neighborhood. The Omaha-based business offers treatments for depression, PTSD, anxiety and pain. Waybridge opened its original flagship location in October 2023 near 168th & West Center Road, which serves eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

Korean Restaurant Opening Soon in Papillion

GUGU Ramen, a ramen and Korean fried chicken concept, will soon open at 9820 South 71st Plaza in the corner bay of a strip mall next to Jersey’s Mikes. That’s just off 72nd & Cornhusker Road in Papillion and adjacent to Golden Apple Buffet, which opened in June 2024 under the same ownership. – Nicole Buntgen

Kohl’s Closing 27 Stores But Not in Nebraska

Kohl’s is closing 27 underperforming stores in 15 states, according to Fox Business. None of them are in Nebraska or Iowa. Ten of the closing stores are in California. The Wisconsin-based retail chain has more than 1,150 stores, including five in the Omaha metro.

New Vendors at Inner Rail Food Hall

New vendors are on the horizon at Inner Rail Food Hall in Aksarben Village. Papi’s Mexican Grill recently opened, specializing in authentic tacos, burritos, and customizable bowls. Other vendors coming soon include All-American Burger, which specializes in smash burgers and fries, and The Grove, a local cold-pressured juice and wellness cafe with existing locations downtown and in west Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen

Sports Complex Moving Forward at Levi Carter Park

The Levi Carter Park Activity and Sports Complex project is about to move forward. In two weeks, the city council will vote on an ordinance to hire Hausmann Construction, Inc. as construction manager at risk. The project will consist of a 100,000 sq. ft. facility with 10 basketball/volleyball courts, a wrestling room, weightlifting room, computer labs and community space. Additionally, the project will add 4 outdoor soccer fields and a 360-stall parking lot. The initial budget is $35,000,000. Site grading could start as early as this spring. The outdoor improvements will be turned over as soon as fall 2025, while the indoor facility could be completed by August 2026. – Isaiah Ang

City Council Approves Funding for Plaza de La Raza

The Omaha City Council approved a resolution to pay $500,000 toward the Plaza de La Raza project in South Omaha. Located at 24th & N Street in the middle of the vibrant South 24th Street business district, the project site is currently a surface parking lot and small pedestrian plaza. Canopy South, a nonprofit organization, is leading the project and has plans to transform the parking lot into a public space. The City’s contribution will fund a children’s playground. Additional funding from the State of Nebraska and Douglas County total $6.5 million and will help fund the construction of a stage, open green space and revived pedestrian plaza. – Isaiah Ang

Mediterranean Restaurant Coming to Village Pointe

Exterior Signage is up for Meddys, a fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant at 17255 Davenport Street in the former Gunderson’s Jewelry space at Village Pointe. While an opening date has not been announced, this will mark the restaurant’s first Nebraska location. Meddys also operates in Missouri and Oklahoma and is known for its hummus, shawarmas and platters. – Nicole Buntgen

Starbucks Reverses Open-Door Policy

Starbucks has updated its store policies, now requiring all guests who enter its cafes to make a purchase. The new policy is effective across all North American locations and aims to address concerns related to non-paying visitors and people without housing. It also marks a shift from the company's previous open-door policy established in 2018, which allowed anyone to use its spaces regardless of purchase. – Nicole Buntgen

Freddy’s Signs Development Deal for 3 New Restaurants in Omaha

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers has signed a development deal with TR Hospitality to open three new restaurants across Douglas and Sarpy counties. The brand has several existing locations in the Omaha metro. Wichita, Kansas-based Freddy’s has more than 550 restaurants in 36 states, with approximately 130 locations in development for 2025 and 2026.

The Hideaway Bar Opens in Council Bluffs

The Hideaway Grill and Bar recently opened at 807 South 21st Street in the former Whistles Pub & Grub space in Council Bluffs. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. The family-owned restaurant runs $5 lunch specials and includes six televisions and a billiard hall. - Nicole Buntgen

Women’s Gym Expanding to La Vista

Victress MVMT, a women’s strength and conditioning gym, will host its grand opening and ribbon cutting February 1 at 8035 South 83rd Avenue (near 84th & Giles) in La Vista. The gym focuses on women’s fitness and intentional training tailored to different stages of life. The gym has a current Omaha location at 1314 North 205th Street plus one in Lincoln. Expansion plans include West Des Moines, Iowa; Boise, Idaho; and Sioux Falls, S.D. - Nicole Buntgen

Outback Steakhouse Closes Cass Street Location

Outback Steakhouse has closed its location at 7605 Cass Street. Part of Tampa, Florida-based Bloomin' Brands, Inc., Outback continues to operate its other metro area locations at 2414 South 132nd Street in Omaha and southeast of Cornhusker Road & Kennedy Freeway in Bellevue.

Streetcar Authority Awards Construction Contract

The Omaha Streetcar Authority approved three contracts for additional construction and engineering work. The largest is $26.7 million with Sampson Construction to build the vehicle maintenance facility. One proponent of the resolution asked about the facility’s capacity if there are future streetcar routes to Council Bluffs or other locations. The facility will have capacity to absorb additional vehicle maintenance needs that future extensions may require, but additional storage will be needed. Completion of the maintenance facility is scheduled for December 2026. – Isaiah Ang

Mexican Restaurant Replacing Former Mexican Restaurant

Signage has been installed for Señor Tequila Mexican Restaurant at 14440 F Street, where Cilantro's used to be located. Cilantro’s announced that it plans to move to the Oakview area. Señor Tequila has an existing location in Fremont. - Nicole Buntgen

Mediterranean Restaurant Moving to Former Copps Locations

Zaytuna, a Mediterranean cuisine restaurant, will open soon at 7204 Jones Street in the former Copps Pizza location. The family-owned business opened in 2020 and currently operates food trucks at 423 South 13th Street in downtown Omaha and 12701 South 28th Avenue in Bellevue, as well as a spot inside Inner Rail Food Hall in Aksarben. Zaytuna’s menu features popular items such as falafel, chicken shawarma, and baba ganoush. – Nicole Buntgen

Elevate Cycling & Fitness Relocates to Aksarben Village

Elevate Cycling & Fitness has opened at 2111 South 67th Street in Aksarben Village, relocating from Rockbrook Village. The locally owned fitness studio offers a range of classes, including cycling, HIIT, sculpt, endurance and strength training. Elevate also operates Elevate Medspa and Elevate Stretch & Cryotherapy, all located in Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen
