Buffett Fundraiser Benefits Omaha’s Stephen Center

A fundraiser led by Warren Buffett and shareholders as part of Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting has raised $1.3 million for The Stephen Center. Buffett signed 20 copies of the new book 60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway, which were auctioned off to the highest bidders. Buffett then matched the final dollar amount raised in the auction. The money will help The Stephen Center fund a new substance abuse treatment center and a housing facility for women and children. – Mark Champion

Funny Bone & Draft Cade Getting Close to Opening

Exterior signage is in place, and most of the interior build-out has been completed for the relocated Funny Bone Comedy Club, which will open soon in Miracle Hills. The 16,270 sq. ft. space will also include Draft Cade, and arcade bar and restaurant with existing locations in Kansas City; Toledo, Ohio; and Richmond, Va. Funny Bone is moving from Village Pointe. The comedy club has 15 locations in eight states.

Bellevue Good Life District Now Offering Lots for Sale

NAI NP Dodge has listed several lots for sale in Bellevue’s Good Life District at the interchange of Highways 75 & 34. Four shovel-ready, commercial lots from 6.73 to 32.65 acres are now available in the mixed-use development. The 575-acre Good Life District is anchored by Bellevue Bay, a 100,000 sq. ft. water park now under construction. When it opens in 2027, it will be the fourth-largest indoor water park in the nation with 600,000 visitors annually.

Wingstop Plans to Open in Midtown Near UNMC

Wingstop, a quick-serve restaurant that sells Buffalo wings, plans to open a new store in a Cricket Wireless building at 365 Saddle Creek Road, according to Dave Critser of Perkins-Critser Construction, which is renovating the space. Cricket will move to the back half of the building, while Wingstop will take the front part. Construction begins later this month. Wingstop has nine existing Omaha locations.

Retail Rebel Opens First Nebraska Location

Retail Rebel, a discount shopping retailer, will soon open its first Nebraska location at 8005 Blondo Street in Omaha. The store features two components—The Bins, a warehouse of hand-picked items sold at flat rates that drop daily, and The Auctions, a virtual platform where shoppers can bid on select items. Retail Rebel operates additional stores in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and soon Georgia. – Nicole Buntgen

Construction Starts on Model House at Heartland of America Park

Omaha by Design is bringing something new to the Riverfront. From June to October, visitors can tour an Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ADU, at Heartland of America Park. The ADU is currently under construction just north of the Skate Ribbon. The City of Omaha has expanded zoning regulations to allow ADU’s in more areas, including recently passing an amendment to allow them in agricultural zoned areas. ADUs create additional housing on single-family lots. Designed by Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, the Heartland Park ADU is a 600 sq. ft., one-bedroom, one-bathroom concept with two patios. – Isaiah Ang

Westroads Plans to Expand Former Younkers Space

Westroads Mall will see some big changes, according to final plat documents reviewed by the Omaha Planning Board last week. The 174,000 sq. ft. west anchor building, previously a Younkers department store, will see a 32,000 sq. ft., two-story expansion. According to the plat documents, the former Granite City building will be demolished and will be replaced with additional parking spaces. – Isaiah Ang

Salon to Open Above Coneflower Creamery in Downtown Elkhorn

RAEVA Mane Street Oasis, an eight-chair, booth-rental salon, plans to open in Olde Towne Elkhorn this June. The salon will operate in a recently constructed building at 2625 North Main Street on the second floor above the soon-to-open Coneflower Creamery. The owner is Lindsay Karella, a seasoned hairstylist and Elkhorn native.

Mouth of the South Returns to Original Ownership

Mouth of the South, a local Southern and Cajun-inspired restaurant, is now fully back under the ownership of founder Ryan Ernst. A 2017 fire destroyed its original location at 8505 North 30th Street in Florence, leading to changes in location and ownership structure. Ernst said the business has now “returned to the concept that started it all,” with a renewed focus on community, hospitality and Southern flavors. The restaurant continues to operate at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza. – Nicole Buntgen

First-Ever Aksarben Crit Takes Place Next Weekend

The first-ever Aksarben Crit is coming to Aksarben Village Saturday, May 17. For the layperson, a “crit,” or “criterium,” is a bicycle race of a specified number of laps on a closed course over public roads closed to normal traffic. The event will begin near Baxter Arena at 3 p.m. with the Men’s Open. Then, a new race will start for different divisions at the top of each hour before the final event of the night at 8:15 p.m. for the Men’s Professional. Admission is free. – Cole Young

Omaha’s First Video Game & Energy Bar Opening in September

The Stamina Bar, Omaha’s first video game-themed energy bar, will open at 8713 Shamrock Road in Countryside Village. The bar is an extension of The Gamers Oasis—a video game store located just next door—and will serve energy drink-infused smoothies and beverages. Omaha Ranks as a Top Metro for Working Moms

Omaha is the fourth best mid-sized metro area in America for working moms in 2025, according to CoworkingCafe. The rankings were developed using 15 metrics such as the share of employed moms, childcare accessibility and affordability, work-from-home and self-employment rates, access to pediatricians, income and more.

Right at Home Hosts International Conference in Omaha

Right at Home, an Omaha-based, in-home caregiving franchise with more than 750 locations worldwide, is celebrating its 30th anniversary during its annual conference this week at the CHI Health Center. More than 600 Right at Home national and international franchisees, office staff and corporate staff are attending.

Wounded Warriors Family Support Breaks Ground for Dunham House

Dunham House broke ground Tuesday on a 40-acre site in north Omaha for a first-of-its-kind, transformational housing initiative meant to serve combat-wounded veterans in need of long-term residential-centered care. Dunham House is being developed in collaboration with Omaha-based nonprofit Wounded Warriors Family Support. When the single-story, 27,500 sq. ft. building opens in July 2026, Dunham House will house 30 veterans who require supportive care yet seek to maintain independence. – Mark Champion

Big Grove Brewery Prepares to Open on UNMC Campus

Big Grove Brewery is just weeks away from opening its first Nebraska taproom in the recently completed Catalyst building on the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s EDGE District campus. The building was historically a steel mill. Big Grove Brewery has been working to fill 100 full- and part-time jobs this week. Big Grove started in 2013 in Solon, Iowa, and now has locations in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa Credit Union Plans Second Omaha Location

GreenState Credit Union will open a second Omaha branch at the northwest corner of 204th & Harrison Street in the Coventry development, near the recently opened Taco Bell. The Iowa-based credit union is also preparing to open its first Omaha location near 180th & West Maple Road. GreenState operates nearly 30 branches across Iowa, Illinois, and the Chicago area. Darland Completes Renovation of DMSi Software Office

Darland recently completed an office remodel for DMSi software at 11650 Miracle Hills Drive. This renovation involved the removal of a section of the upper floor, creating an open, two-story area with a ‘floating’ conference room. A custom staircase was constructed to anchor the two spaces. The project included the creation of a work café with various seating options, interactive games and beer taps. Founded in 1976 by Omaha’s Baum Iron to create an inventory system, DMSi quickly pivoted to serve others in the building products industry.

Baker’s to Build New Grocery Store at 204th & Q

Baker’s plans to build a $40 million Baker’s Marketplace grocery store northwest of 204th & Q Street. At 123,000 sq. ft., this Baker’s Marketplace will be approximately 55,000 sq. ft. larger than traditional Baker’s stores. The property will include a Baker’s fuel center and space for future development. The store will employ more than 300 people. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this summer. Completion would likely be in 2026, but Baker’s will release the official construction timeline later.

Council Bluffs City Council Thwarts Redevelopment of Riverfront Golf Course

The previously reported plans to redevelop the Dodge Riverside Golf Club hit a snag last night. In April, the City of Council Bluffs released plans to redevelop the golf course into a mixed-use development with up to 3,900 residential units. While the plan was merely conceptual, it was intended to identify the potential redevelopment ahead of a vote to make the property surplus and initiate the process of possibly selling the property to a developer. In a 3-2 vote, the city council rejected the motion to make the golf course surplus property. Future proposals could be considered, but efforts to sell the property have been thwarted. – Isaiah Ang

Clarkson College Plans to Install Digital Sign on Dodge Plus Renovations

Clarkson College plans to install a large digital board on its main building at 42nd & Dodge Street. Plans call for a 4-story scrim on the northwest corner of the building. On top of it would be the college’s logo and the vertical digital board, wrapping around the corner of the building. The digital board will display information about healthcare with a goal to attract more students to healthcare careers. The college plans several other renovations, including a new entrance and welcome center.

“Traveling Dinosaur Museum” Debuts in Omaha

The Dino Bus made its debut last weekend. The “traveling museum” is a modified bus with replica dinosaur fossils inside. Dino Bus is part of Stomp Chomp Roar, LLC, which started in 2019 by providing dinosaur-themed entertainment for children’s birthday parties. “Omaha always has temporary dinosaur exhibits come through town, but it's time we have something more permanent for kids to experience prehistoric life,” said Anthony Pontiero, owner.

GUGU Ramen will hold a ribbon cutting May 16th for its new restaurant at 9820 South 71st Plaza in Papillion. The Japanese restaurant is already open for busness. GUGU Ramen has the same local ownership as Golden Apple Buffet, which is next door.

SpartanNash held a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration this past weekend for its Supermercado Nuestra Familia grocery store at 5101 Harrison Street. The Hispanic grocery store replaced the former Harrison Family Fare store.

Hurrdat Acquires PR Firm Lukas Partners

Hurrdat has announced the acquisition of Lukas Partners, a strategic communications and public relations firm led by Joan Lukas. Both companies are based in Omaha. Hurrdat is “a diversified media, marketing and entertainment company.” The acquisition strengthens Hurrdat’s ability to offer fully integrated marketing and communications solutions.

Signage Installed at Future Tracks Lounge West Location

Signage has been installed but much of the interior build-out remains to be completed at Tracks Lounge’s future west Omaha location southwest of 180th & Q Street. Famous for its fried chicken, Tracks has been in business for 60 years. The original location is just east of Aksarben Village at 1506 South 60th Street.

Storm Bath & Beauty Opens Near 144th & Center

Storm Bath & Beauty has opened at 14455 West Center Road. The store features a “DIY Bath & Beauty Bar, where guests can create their own sugar scrubs, body oils and more.” Storm Bath & Beauty offers artisan products, including emulsified scrubs, hydrating body butters and handmade soaps.

Warren Buffett Announces Retirement as CEO

At the end of today’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting at CHI Health Center, Warren Buffett surprisingly announced his retirement. The Oracle of Omaha said he would ask Berkshire’s board of directors at tomorrow’s meeting to make second-on-command Greg Abel the CEO by the end of this year. Buffett said he would still “hang around” presumably as chairman and as an advisor. Abel, who was designated as the CEO successor in 2021, is currently vice chairman of non-insurance.

New Restaurant Planned on South 24th Street Corridor

A new restaurant called La Casa Del Pollo will open at 2405 N Street. The building is located on the south side of the parking lot west of the Plaza De La Raza. That area will be activated by a redevelopment project that will transform the parking lot into much needed public space and amenities, including a stage, event lawn and playgrounds. “Emerging Chef” Sandwich Shop Opening in Bel Air Plaza

The Daily, a fast-casual sandwich shop, plans to open this month at 12100 West Center Road, Suite 112, in Bel Air Plaza. The restaurant is designed to launch the next generation of culinary talent. Emerging chefs will rotate through the kitchen, testing and refining their concepts before moving on to open businesses of their own. Two startups — Heavenly Body a gluten free bakery and Against the Current— will be the first featured businesses, bringing creative offerings and artisanal tastes to the menu.

Joint Effort Seeks to Revitalize Omaha Tree Canopy

In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, the City of Omaha, Papio-Missouri River NRD and local businesses, the American Reforestation Initiative officially launched the Replant Omaha Initiative, a 10-year program to restore Omaha’s tree canopy, which suffered unprecedented losses during storms last summer. Creighton Business Index Declines in April But Still Positive

The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, moved above the 50.0 growth neutral threshold for a fourth straight month. The April reading declined to a solid 53.3 from March’s stronger 56.7. The bad news is that the April employment index tumbled to 44.9, its lowest level since November, and down from 67.6 in March.

“Reading Lounge” Coming to Downtown This June

The Barker Building at 15th & Farnam Street will be home to a “reading lounge.” The Reading Room will take over the former Omaha Lounge spot at 1505 Farnam. The space was most recently Pedego Electic Bikes. According to owner Samantha Morley, the business combines a comfortable space with access to a full bar, coffee, tea and small food items. Ameristar Casino to Undergo Renovation & Name Change

After 30 years, the Ameristar Casino Riverboat in Council Bluffs is being replaced by an on-land casino. The Iowa Gaming Commission approved the $180-$200 million renovation project, which will bring gambling onto land, according to WOWT. The project will take a few years to complete, but at that time, the riverboat will be retired, with its next destination still unknown. The renovation will also include new branding. Ameristar will become a Hollywood Casino, Penn Entertainment’s top casino brand. – Isaiah Ang

Wild Chicken Grill Opens Second Location in La Vista

Wild Chicken Grill opened its second location on April 28 at 8220 Giles Road in the former Long John Silver’s/A&W building, just south of La Vista City Centre at Brentwood Village Shopping Center. The fast-casual restaurant serves grilled and crispy chicken, burgers, brews and breakfast items. Its original location is in Bellevue at 3604 Twin Creek Drive. – Nicole Buntgen

FNBO Acquires Country Club Bank of Kansas City

First National Bank of Omaha announced that it is acquiring the CCB Financial Corporation, the parent company of Kansas City-based Country Club Bank. CCB currently employs more than 400 people. The 20 existing CCB branches in Kansas and Missouri will be converted to FNBO locations.  The acquisition is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025 and will bring FNBO’s total assets to almost $35 billion. - Isaiah Ang

Gretna Crossing Shopping Center Planned at 192nd & Highway 370

The Lerner Company has entered into a contract to develop Gretna Crossing, a retail project at 192nd & Highway 370 in Gretna. The 70-acre site has a half mile of frontage on Highway 370 and will ultimately have up to 500,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The project is expected to create 1,400 permanent retail and service jobs. Gretna Crossing is in the early planning stages. A groundbreaking date has not been announced.

Entrepreneurs’ Organization Members from 15 Countries Coming to Omaha

The Nebraska chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization will welcome EO members from around the world this Friday to an event coinciding with Berkshire weekend at the Holland Performing Arts Center. Approximately 200 EO members will attend, representing 43 chapters in 15 countries. EO Nebraska has 125 business-owner members, who collectively employ 7,930 people and generate $276 million in gross revenue, according to Julie Hockney of JH Interior Design, the chapter’s current president and first female leader.

Chick Bo-Bao Taking Over Former Poke Boba House Space

Chick Bo-Bao is taking over the former Poke Boba House space at 510 South 13th Street on the western side of the Old Market. The locally owned restaurant had been planning to move into 1213 Howard Street but has shifted to the 13th Street location. Chick Bo-Bao serves Korean fried chicken, Korean corn dogs, bubble tea and mochi donuts. The original Chick Bo-Bao is at 7440 North 30th street.

The Cannabis Factory Opening in Former OFD Hazmat Facility

The Cannabis Factory plans open soon at 3434 South 84th Street in a building that was once the Omaha Fire Department’s hazmat facility. It was more recently a Midwest Medical Transport Co. location. The building is being renovated into a retail store as well as the company’s new headquarters, which will move from 1215 South 13th Street. The Cannabis Factory has 21 locations in Nebraska and says its Nebraska number-one cannabis dispensary. – Terry Anderson
