Girls Inc. Unveils Plans for New South Omaha Center

Girls Inc. unveiled building details about its to-be-rebuilt Emma Lozier Center in South Omaha located at 2108 L Street near South High School. At 36,000 sq. ft., the updated center will be nearly five times larger than the current South Omaha Center. It will accommodate 300 girls, offering a similar scope of services and opportunities to the Katherine Fletcher Center in North Omaha, including a full-size gym, maker space and instructional kitchen. Like the North Center, the nearly $35 million South Center will have a dedicated fleet of vans for after-school and field trip transportation. Groundbreaking is scheduled for October.

Draftcade Opens in Miracle Hills

Draftcade, a retro arcade bar and restaurant, has opened at 710 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. Connected to the relocated Funny Bone Comedy Club, the venue offers 48 rotating drafts, a full bar and unlimited play on 75 classic games like Donkey Kong, NBA Jam and Pac-Man with the purchase of a game band. The space is 21+ after 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. – Nicole Buntgen

The Fox Den to Replace La Bo in Dundee

The Fox Den will open soon at 4916 Underwood Avenue in Dundee, replacing La Bo, a bodega that closed July 26 after opening a year ago beneath Ooh De Lally. La Bo offered small bites, pintxos, and to-go wine and cocktails. The soft opening starts August 12 followed by a grand opening weekend August 15 and 16. The Fox Den shares Ooh De Lally’s mission through its partnership with the Metropolitan Community College 180 Re-entry Assistance Program. – Nicole Buntgen

ko & co Studios Expanding to Papillion

ko & co Studios, a locally owned studio space for independent beauty and wellness professionals, is opening a second location this September near 108th & Highway 370 in Papillion. This additional site will offer private, move-in-ready studios for hairstylists, estheticians, tattoo artists and other independent pros. The original ko & co studio is on the northeast corner of 192nd & Pacific Street in Omaha.

Neuro Nebraska to Bring Personalized Brain Health Services to West Omaha

A neuropsychology clinic is coming to west Omaha. Neuro Nebraska will open this month at 15808 West Dodge Road #200. The specialty clinic will offer personalized care for individuals navigating memory loss, cognitive changes and other brain health concerns. Led by board-certified clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Lindy Fields, Neuro Nebraska will donate a portion of proceeds to brain-related initiatives in the community.

African Cuisine Restaurant to Replace Panda House Downtown

“Africa on a Plate” plans to open around September 1st in the former Panda House Chinese Restaurant space at 301 South 16th Street in downtown Omaha. The locally owned restaurant will take guests on “a culinary journey through the heart of Africa and taste the resilience and beauty of South Sudanese culture.” Africa on a Plate will feature traditional, vegan and gluten-free menu items.

Dillard’s Files Building Permit for Former Younkers Store at Westroads

The Omaha City Council yesterday approved a 32,000 sq. ft. expansion of the long-vacant former Younker’s department store space. A building permit filed with the City of Omaha indicates that the expanded space will be home to a Dillard’s Department Store. After the expansion, the 2-story anchor space will total 207,800 sq. ft. A new entry will be included in the addition. The brick veneer will match the existing building. As part of the project, the former Granite City building will be demolished to create more parking. The Younker’s space has been vacant since 2018. Dillard’s has not yet officially announced the new Westroads store.

Higher Inflation with Job Losses Dampen Mid-America Manufacturing Index

After six straight months of positive readings, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, sank below 50.0 growth neutral threshold for July. The index declined to 49.4 for July from 50.7 in June. Employment losses occurred for the fourth straight month. Inflationary pressures are moving higher at the wholesale level.

Crossroads Redevelopment Takes Another Step Forward

The Crossroads Mall redevelopment project reached a significant milestone with the approval of ordinances to approve contracts with Holland Basham Architects and MCL to design and build Phase 1 parking facilities and retail buildings. The city and the developer, Woodbury Corporation, have an agreement that includes obligations for the city to build and manage parking facilities throughout the development. Phase 1 includes retail, commercial and residential buildings with podium and underground parking structures. – Isaiah Ang

The Beanery Taking Over Former Rally Coffee in Gretna

The Beanery is taking over the former Rally Coffee space at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. Opening is scheduled for this Wednesday – August 6th. The location is northeast of 180th & Highway 370. The Beanery has existing locations in Papillion, Ashland, 168th & Giles Road and an existing Gretna store at 11849 South 216th Street. Rally Coffee closed its Gretna location last month, but its downtown Omaha location remains open at 749 North 14th Street.

Burger Detour Abruptly Closes Both Locations Effective Today

Burger Detour permanently closed both of its locations as of today. The restaurants were located at 18308 Evans Street (near 180th & West Maple Road) and 1220 South 203rd Street (just south of Pacific Street). Both properties were listed for sale back in May but the restaurants remained open at that time. Burger Detour’s ownership had been building a third location at 120th & L Street, but that project was scrapped this past spring.

Public Pickleball Courts Open in Omaha & Bellevue

After a long wait, one of the final pieces of the RiverFront Parks opened last week. The pickleball courts are officially open on a first-come, first-serve basis. The four courts are located on the north side of the Kiewit Luminarium at Lewis and Clark Landing. Last week, the City of Bellevue also celebrated the completion of four new pickleball courts at Everett Park on the northeast corner of Betz Road & Englewood Drive. – Isaiah Ang

Porky Butts BBQ Temporarily Closes to Fix Damage

Porky Butts BBQ at 15475 Ruggles Street is temporarily closed for repairs and clean-up. A broken fire suppression water line caused extensive flooding and damage over the weekend. The restaurant’s management is working to determine a timeline for reopening.

Tasty Pizza to Build Restaurant on North Saddle Creek

Tasty Pizza will build a restaurant at 1421 North Saddle Creek Road near Sgt. Peffer’s Café Italian. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2026. The local pizzeria currently operates out of a former gas station but plans to upgrade to a space with a more efficient kitchen and a drive-through for carryout orders, according to the City Clerk’s Office. – Nicole Buntgen

U.S. News Ranks Nebraska Medical Center No. 1 in Nebraska

U.S. News & World Report ranked Nebraska Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in the state of Nebraska for the 14th straight year. The publication evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals nationwide to develop its annual list of Best Hospitals. U.S. News considered things like risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care in developing these rankings.

Omaha Streetcar Authority Approves Change Orders

In its July meeting, the Omaha Streetcar Authority approved change orders totaling $245,099 in its contract with Hawkins Construction regarding modifications to water main and other utility infrastructure related to the Farnam and Harney Street Bridges requested by MUD. Additionally, director Rick Gustafson reported that a large payment of nearly $7.4 million was made to CAF USA in June. Since accepting CAF’s bid to provide the streetcar vehicles, the authority has paid more than $15 million of the $47 million contract. – Isaiah Ang

Little Roots Market to Host Grand Opening in Crescent, IA

Little Roots Market, a self-serve farm stand, will hold a grand opening August 9 and 10 at 77 Old Lincoln Highway in Crescent, Iowa. The market will offer fresh produce, baked goods, sweet treats and products from sister businesses J&A Treasures (wood décor) and Bros’ Candy (freeze-dried sweets). – Nicole Buntgen

Smokin Barrel BBQ Opening August 1 at New Location

Smokin Barrel BBQ will open August 1 at 2457 South 132nd Street just east of Fazoli’s north 132nd & West Center. The local barbecue spot relocated from 13508 Discovery Drive and will operate Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or until sold out. – Nicole Buntgen

Greenstreet Cycles to Close Remaining Store This September

Greenstreet Cycles will close its remaining shop at 225 South Washington Street in Papillion effective September 28. The Aksarben Village location closed back in May. Greenstreet has been in business since 2010. Owner Ben Swan said the bike industry has been tough lately. While the pandemic brought a new wave of riders, it was followed by an oversaturated market and competition from direct-to-consumer bike brands.

NeighborGood Expands to New Papillion Location

NeighborGood, a community pantry serving Sarpy County and Ralston, has moved to a new space at 1712 Charleston Drive in Papillion near 66th & Cornhusker Road. The nonprofit provides food, hygiene items, pet supplies and other items to those in need. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for September 16. – Nicole Buntgen

City Plans to Repair Bob Kerrey Bridge Fountain

The Omaha City Council approved the purchase of $127,977 in materials and equipment to repair the Bob Kerrey Bridge Plaza Fountain, adjacent to the bridge on the Nebraska side. The materials and equipment will be purchased from Crystal Fountain, Inc., which provided the original infrastructure. The Parks and Recreation department will make the necessary repairs to the fountain. – Isaiah Ang

New Convenience Store Planned for 40th & Ames

A neighborhood convenience store is planned for the commercial district at 40th & Ames Avenue. Tariq Ali plans to open NYC Deli & Liquor at 4004 Ames Avenue later this year. In addition to packaged food and alcoholic beverages, the business will sell fresh and prepared foods, including sandwiches and grilled items. Eppley Breaks All-Time Monthly Passenger Record in June

Eppley Airfield celebrated a historic milestone in June. The airport recorded 524,331 passengers last month, a new all-time monthly record. The existing monthly record was 514,758 passengers in June of 2024. Year-to-date passenger traffic is down three percent from last year. – Isaiah Ang

Tavern 180 Closes Lincoln Location

Tavern 180, a modern American restaurant and bar that originated in Omaha, closed its Lincoln location on July 29 after six years in business. The closure was announced via Facebook. The original Omaha location near 180th & Dodge remains open. The Lincoln closure leaves the Omaha restaurant as the brand’s only remaining location. – Nicole Buntgen

The Hampton Inn & Suites Opens Near Med Center

The Hampton Inn & Suites Omaha UN Medical Center Area is now open at 4401 Douglas Street. The 6-story hotel has 96 rooms and is located a block north of Nebraska Medicine’s planned $2.2 billion hospital. Managed by MH Hospitality, the hotel offers self-contained parking and an available retail space. Amenities include contemporary accommodations, flexible event spaces, complimentary breakfast and a fitness center.

Iowa Coffee Chain Plans Second West Omaha Store

Hyper Energy Bar, a beverage chain from Urbandale, Iowa, is planning to open two locations in west Omaha. The first one, a 900 sq. ft. building on the southwest corner of 180th & West Maple Road, is now under construction. The second will be a double-drive-thru building southeast of 180th & Burke Street west of Village Pointe. Construction will start in early October with opening planned for January. Hyper Energy currently has seven locations – six in the Des Moines, Iowa, metro area and one in Iowa City.

Chicken N Pickle Cancels Omaha Location Plans

Chicken N Pickle, a family-friendly entertainment complex, will no longer open its first Nebraska location at Tranquility Commons near 120th & Fort Street. Originally set to open this year, the Kansas City-based company announced a “strategic growth shift” in May to focus on its 13 existing locations across seven states. - Nicole Buntgen

Kia Dealership Coming to Village Pointe West

H&H Kia has broken ground for a new car dealership on 9.77 acres between Walgreens and Core Bank southeast of 180th & Burke Street in Village Pointe West. The Kia dealership will include sales and service with enough space for 600 cars on site. Construction should be completed at the end of 2026. Kia has a current dealership in Papillion northeast of Highways 50 & 370.

Jensen Tire Building Store Near 204th & Q

Jensen Tire & Auto has started construction on a new store on the southwest corner of 204th & N Street. The site is in front of a planned $40 million, 125,000 sq. ft. Baker’s Marketplace grocery store. Just to the north of the Jensen tire site, FNB0 has opened an ATM on a pad site that will eventually have a branch office. Just north of that is a brand-new Scooter’s Coffee. Jensen Tire has 22 existing locations.

Steelhouse Omaha Adding Outdoor Venue

Steelhouse Omaha plans to convert its existing outdoor space into an outdoor venue. Currently, the performance venue has concrete patio on the southwest corner of the building. Based on a building permit, the $92,000 project consists of three decks, two shipping containers, outdoor seating, turf and landscaping. - Isaiah Ang

7 Brew Coffee Moving Forward in Council Bluffs

As previously reported, Arkansas-based coffee chain, 7 Brew Coffee, is entering the market with locations in Fremont, Omaha (182nd & West Maple Road) and Council Bluffs. Next week, the Council Bluffs City Council will review a resolution for the development plan of the location at 2901 West Broadway, formally a U.S. Bank location. The existing bank building will be demolished. Plans show a coffee kiosk building with drive-thru and a separate storage and cooling building. The store will be drive-thru only. - Isaiah Ang

Riddle’s Jewelry Plans Two Additional Omaha Stores

Riddle’s Jewelry is planning to open two additional Omaha area locations by the end of this year. The Rapid City, S.D.-based retailer has more than 60 stores in 10 states. The current Westroads Mall location will remain open. A second location at Shadow Lake Towne Center is anticipated to open soon after Labor Day across from Victoria’s Secret, adjacent to the amphitheater. The third location will be at Village Pointe, next to Claire’s, and is anticipated to open by November. - Isaiah Ang

Senior Living Building Going Up in Far Southwest Omaha

A 55+ senior living project is planned for a 2.85-acre lot southwest of 192nd & Adams Street in the Falling Waters subdivision. According to city council documents, the project will consist of an 88-unit apartment building. The city council is currently reviewing an amendment to the mixed-use district development agreement to allow the project to reduce the required parking space from two spaces per unit to one space per unit. The planning department recommends approval. – Isaiah Ang

Qdoba Opens Elkhorn Area Location

Qdoba Mexican Eats opened its new Elkhorn-area store yesterday in the former Oklahoma Joe’s barbeque space at 1405 South 204th Street. Oklahoma Joe’s closed the restaurant several months ago but continues to operate a store at Aksarben Village. Qdoba now has 11 Omaha-area locations.

Council Bluffs Moves Forward with East Side Housing Development

Council Bluffs continues to make progress on the East Manawa Phase 1 project. This phase includes 40 single-family homes for households making 80 percent or less of the area median income. Turn the Paige Homes is the developer. The city council will review a resolution to approve Sudbeck Homes as the builder for Phase 1. There were seven submittals in response to the Request for Proposals. Sudbeck Homes was chosen based on its experience building single-family home projects at scale and its ability to complete the project within the city’s stated guidelines. – Isaiah Ang

Lemon Tree Cafe Reopens in Ralston

Lemon Tree Cafe has reopened at 7614 Main Street in Ralston following a fire on March 6. The family-owned, breakfast-and-brunch spot has added menu items. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Nicole Buntgen

Union Pacific Confirms Merger Talks with Norfolk Southern

Union Pacific today confirmed it is in advanced discussions with Norfolk Southern Railway regarding a merger. “There can be no assurances as to whether an agreement for a transaction will be reached or as to the terms of any such transaction,” a UP press release stated. Omaha-based Union Pacific has a market value of $140 billion, while Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern is valued at $60 billion. If the deal survives regulatory scrutiny, it would create the first coast-to-coast railroad in U.S. history.

OPPD Customers Pay 27.4 Percent Below National Average

Omaha Public Power District reported that its customers pay some of the lowest electrical rates in the country. Based on 2023 data, customers pay 15.8 percent below the regional average and 27.4 percent below the national average. For residential customers, rates were 14 percent below the regional and 24.9 percent below national. Industrial users paid 11.6 percent below the regional and 13.6 percent below the national average. Commercial rates were particularly low with rate below 22.2 percent of the regional  and 32.9 percent of the national average. - Isaiah Ang

Mixed-Income Housing Development Planned Near 680 & Maple

Front Porch Investments and New Visions Homeless Services announced a Request-for-Proposals from “qualified and mission-aligned real estate developers” to lead the development of a community-centered, affordable or mixed-income housing project on a currently vacant 4.72-acre site located south of 96th & Cady Avenue. NVHS is in the early stages of developing 46 units of permanent supportive housing for senior veterans on the parcel to the north of this site. – Mark Champion

Poarch Chiropractic Plans Ribbon Cutting
