St. Louis-Based Construction Firm Opens Omaha Office
ARCO National Construction, a St. Louis-based, design-build, general contractor, has opened an Omaha office at 11717 Nicholas Street, Suite 110. ARCO has built several buildings in Nebraska over the years, including distribution, cold storage, manufacturing, self-storage and entertainment projects. Most recently, ARCO completed a cold storage expansion project for Performance Food Group in Omaha.
Redfield Building Launches Coffee Shop Pop-Ups
The Redfield Building at 1901 Howard Street has started a weekly coffee shop pop-up series in its lobby, formerly home to Kochava Coffee. Cedar Creek Coffee & Art is this week’s vendor through August 15 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Future vendors will be announced soon. – Nicole Buntgen
Fareway to Build Grocery Store in Far Southwest Omaha
Fareway Meat & Grocery plans to build a store in Iron Bluff, a mixed-use development southwest of 204th & F Street. Iron Bluff will also be home to a future Omaha Public Library branch, Elkhorn Public Schools’ middle and elementary schools, an assisted living facility, an apartment complex and space for other commercial businesses. Boone, Iowa-based Fareway has six existing Omaha-area stores.
Dumpling Empire Opens Second Location
Dumpling Empire has opened at 15825 West Maple Road in the former Dickey’s Barbecue Pit space. The Chinese restaurant also operates at 5413 South 72nd Street. Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (closed Tuesdays) and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. – Nicole Buntgen
Tipico Helado Opens Old Market Ice Cream Shop
Tipico Helado opened an Old Market store a couple days ago in the former Niche space at 1209 Howard Street. Tipico Helado has existing locations at 15623 West Dodge Road, 5210 South 21st Street and 453 North Main Street in Fremont. The Mexican ice cream shop offers more than 50 flavors and also operates throughout the metro through mobile trailers. – Nicole Buntgen
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Plans September Opening
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is now projected to open in September at 3430 North 167th Street southeast of 168th & West Maple Road. The project, contracted by Perkins-Critser Construction, has been somewhat delayed due to revisions requested by Popeyes’ corporate office. Omaha-based Eat Out Now is the owner.
Car Dealership Takes Over Former Johnny Sortino’s building
The former Johnny Sortino’s Pizza building at 7880 L Street is now home to Metro Motors Auto Sales, a locally owned used car dealership with an existing location at 7802 Military Avenue. Sortino’s permanently closed back on May 31st after 60 years in business.
The Tenant in Benson Rebrands as Little Riot
The Tenant, a rooftop bar that opened in August 2024 at 6201 Maple Street in Benson, has rebranded as Little Riot. According to its website, the business is now a pizzeria and rooftop bar offering pizza, wings, ribs, salads and ribeye. The Tenant had operated as an Asian-inspired smokehouse known for its craft cocktails and Rooftop Rosé Garden. – Nicole Buntgen
New Coffee Table Book Documents Aksarben History
The Durham Museum has announced a new coffee table book, entitled Ak-Sar-Ben: Looking Back & Leading Onward, which captures more than a century of Ak-Sar-Ben’s influence on Nebraska through parades, pageantry, philanthropy and progress. Produced in partnership with the Aksarben Foundation and the museum’s On Track Guild, the book is a visual and narrative journey featuring hundreds of rarely seen photographs and newly uncovered stories, all made possible by The Durham’s commitment to preserving Nebraska’s rich cultural heritage. – Joe Champion
Let It Fly Taking Over The City Pub Space
The City Pub closed July 31 at 7861 Main Street in La Vista City Centre. The gastrobar, which opened in late 2023, was known for casual fare and a rooftop patio. Let It Fly, an upscale sports bar, plans to open in the space later this month. Let If Fly has existing locations in The Capitol District downtown and at 1311 South 203rd Street in west Omaha. – Nicole Buntgen
Developer Plans to Build Assisted Living Near 70th & Grover
West Development, the developer of the recently opened Parallel Apartments project – part of the MH Landing – old CoCo Key Redevelopment site northeast of 72nd & Grover Street – presented a plan to the Omaha Planning Board to build a $30 million assisted living and memory care facility. The proposed 3-story building would be south of the Parallel Apartments and have 100 units, with 20 units for memory care residents. The developers requested approval of $3.3 million in Tax Increment Financing. – Isaiah Ang
North Omaha Visitors Celebrates Soft Opening
The North Omaha Visitor’s Center, a nonprofit organization and venue aiming to cultivate tourism and promote the rich history, culture and economic vibrancy of north Omaha, held a soft opening on August 1 near 24th & Burdette Street. The hub for both tourists and locals will feature a gallery, tours and events, as well as a coffee shop and gift shop when it opens to the public in September. – Mark Champion
Current Mutual of Omaha Headquarters Building to Be Preserved
Lanoha Development plans to preserve and repurpose the existing Mutual of Omaha building after the insurance giant moves downtown in 2026, according to Jason Lanoha, CEO. Mutual’s 285-foot-tall current building is at 33rd & Dodge Street. Lanoha is developing the new 44-story headquarters at 14th Farnam Street and will redevelop the current/old campus. There had been some concern that the iconic Midtown tower would have to come down, but Lanoha announced on today’s Grow Omaha show that the current tower will be incorporated into redevelopment plans.
Kids Indoor Play Park Expands Near 144th & Center
The recently opened Kids Indoor Play Park at 14445 West Center Road is already planning to expand. The Omaha Planning Board approved KIPP’s application for an amendment to a conditional use permit that originally allowed an indoor recreation area. The amendment will allow for an 8,700 sq. ft. outdoor play area that will be built on the southeast side of the building. The outdoor space may include a refreshments bar selling food and drinks. – Isaiah Ang
Hy-Vee Launches One-Hour Delivery in Omaha Area
Hy-Vee plans to offer one-hour online delivery 24 hours a day in the Omaha area. Hy-Vee plans to fulfill and distribute online orders from its warehouse at 5710 South 144th Street, a former Super Saver grocery store. Online orders will be sorted and bagged at the warehouse then delivered to individual stores for customer pickup. Hy-Vee is partnering with a currently unnamed third-party vendor to provide this service. The Omaha Planning Board approved an amendment to a conditional use permit to allow for distribution from this property. – Isaiah Ang
Unity Seafood Opens in Former Outback Steakhouse Space
Unity Seafood has opened at 7605 Cass Street near 76th & Cass in the former Outback Steakhouse location. The Cajun bar and grill features an outdoor area and serves dim sum, po’ boys, seafood boils and grilled hot pot. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. – Nicole Buntgen
Developer Plans Blair’s First Major Apartment Project in 20 Years
Metonic has broken ground on its Blair Crossing Apartments project near the intersection of Highways 30 & 133. The 133-unit project will be Blair’s first major multi-family development in more than two decades. Each apartment will include in-unit laundry, smart-home technology and modern finishes. Property amenities include a fitness center, dog park, package lockers and pool.
Santiago’s Mexican Food Celebrates New Location, Anniversary
Santiago’s Mexican Food will celebrate its grand opening and three-year anniversary today, August 8, at its new location inside Blue Sky Bar & Patio at 10730 Pacific Street. The family-owned business started as a food truck in 2022 near 36th & Jefferson. – Nicole Buntgen
CVS Pharmacy Closing Another Omaha Store
CVS Pharmacy will close its store at 8315 West Center Road on August 19. The national chain still operates more than a dozen locations across the Omaha metro. – Nicole Buntgen
Nebraska Patio and Landscape Opening Millard Showroom
Nebraska Patio and Landscape, Inc. is opening a showroom and retail store at 12775 Q Street in the Millard area. The Papillion company provides pation and outdoor living design services and has been in business 25 years. The new retail space will carry Recteq Grills and supplies, pots for plants, fire pits, chiminea’s, bird houses, yard art, trellises, shade sails and more. The store will have a design showcase area with examples of patio ideas and outdoor kitchens.

Girls Inc. Unveils Plans for New South Omaha Center
Girls Inc. unveiled building details about its to-be-rebuilt Emma Lozier Center in South Omaha located at 2108 L Street near South High School. At 36,000 sq. ft., the updated center will be nearly five times larger than the current South Omaha Center. It will accommodate 300 girls, offering a similar scope of services and opportunities to the Katherine Fletcher Center in North Omaha, including a full-size gym, maker space and instructional kitchen. Like the North Center, the nearly $35 million South Center will have a dedicated fleet of vans for after-school and field trip transportation. Groundbreaking is scheduled for October.
Draftcade Opens in Miracle Hills
Draftcade, a retro arcade bar and restaurant, has opened at 710 North 114th Street in Miracle Hills. Connected to the relocated Funny Bone Comedy Club, the venue offers 48 rotating drafts, a full bar and unlimited play on 75 classic games like Donkey Kong, NBA Jam and Pac-Man with the purchase of a game band. The Fox Den to Replace La Bo in Dundee
The Fox Den will open soon at 4916 Underwood Avenue in Dundee, replacing La Bo, a bodega that closed July 26 after opening a year ago beneath Ooh De Lally. La Bo offered small bites, pintxos, and to-go wine and cocktails. The soft opening starts August 12 followed by a grand opening weekend August 15 and 16. ko & co Studios, a locally owned studio space for independent beauty and wellness professionals, is opening a second location this September near 108th & Highway 370 in Papillion. This additional site will offer private, move-in-ready studios for hairstylists, estheticians, tattoo artists and other independent pros. The original ko & co studio is on the northeast corner of 192nd & Pacific Street in Omaha.
Neuro Nebraska to Bring Personalized Brain Health Services to West Omaha
A neuropsychology clinic is coming to west Omaha. Neuro Nebraska will open this month at 15808 West Dodge Road #200. The specialty clinic will offer personalized care for individuals navigating memory loss, cognitive changes and other brain health concerns. Led by board-certified clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Lindy Fields, Neuro Nebraska will donate a portion of proceeds to brain-related initiatives in the community.
African Cuisine Restaurant to Replace Panda House Downtown
“Africa on a Plate” plans to open around September 1st in the former Panda House Chinese Restaurant space at 301 South 16th Street in downtown Omaha. The locally owned restaurant will take guests on “a culinary journey through the heart of Africa and taste the resilience and beauty of South Sudanese culture.” Africa on a Plate will feature traditional, vegan and gluten-free menu items.
Dillard’s Files Building Permit for Former Younkers Store at Westroads
The Omaha City Council yesterday approved a 32,000 sq. ft. expansion of the long-vacant former Younker’s department store space. A building permit filed with the City of Omaha indicates that the expanded space will be home to a Dillard’s Department Store. After the expansion, the 2-story anchor space will total 207,800 sq. ft. A new entry will be included in the addition. The brick veneer will match the existing building. As part of the project, the former Granite City building will be demolished to create more parking. The Younker’s space has been vacant since 2018. Dillard’s has not yet officially announced the new Westroads store.
Higher Inflation with Job Losses Dampen Mid-America Manufacturing Index
After six straight months of positive readings, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, sank below 50.0 growth neutral threshold for July. The index declined to 49.4 for July from 50.7 in June. Employment losses occurred for the fourth straight month. Inflationary pressures are moving higher at the wholesale level.
Crossroads Redevelopment Takes Another Step Forward
The Crossroads Mall redevelopment project reached a significant milestone with the approval of ordinances to approve contracts with Holland Basham Architects and MCL to design and build Phase 1 parking facilities and retail buildings. The city and the developer, Woodbury Corporation, have an agreement that includes obligations for the city to build and manage parking facilities throughout the development. The Beanery Taking Over Former Rally Coffee in Gretna
The Beanery is taking over the former Rally Coffee space at 17878 Oakmont Drive in Gretna. Opening is scheduled for this Wednesday – August 6th. The location is northeast of 180th & Highway 370. The Beanery has existing locations in Papillion, Ashland, 168th & Giles Road and an existing Gretna store at 11849 South 216th Street. Rally Coffee closed its Gretna location last month, but its downtown Omaha location remains open at 749 North 14th Street.
Burger Detour Abruptly Closes Both Locations Effective Today
Burger Detour permanently closed both of its locations as of today. The restaurants were located at 18308 Evans Street (near 180th & West Maple Road) and 1220 South 203rd Street (just south of Pacific Street). Both properties were listed for sale back in May but the restaurants remained open at that time. Burger Detour’s ownership had been building a third location at 120th & L Street, but that project was scrapped this past spring.
Public Pickleball Courts Open in Omaha & Bellevue
After a long wait, one of the final pieces of the RiverFront Parks opened last week. The pickleball courts are officially open on a first-come, first-serve basis. The four courts are located on the north side of the Kiewit Luminarium at Lewis and Clark Landing. Last week, the City of Bellevue also celebrated the completion of four new pickleball courts at Everett Park on the northeast corner of Betz Road & Englewood Drive. – Isaiah Ang
Porky Butts BBQ Temporarily Closes to Fix Damage
Porky Butts BBQ at 15475 Ruggles Street is temporarily closed for repairs and clean-up. A broken fire suppression water line caused extensive flooding and damage over the weekend. The restaurant’s management is working to determine a timeline for reopening.
Tasty Pizza to Build Restaurant on North Saddle Creek
Tasty Pizza will build a restaurant at 1421 North Saddle Creek Road near Sgt. Peffer’s Café Italian. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2026. The local pizzeria currently operates out of a former gas station but plans to upgrade to a space with a more efficient kitchen and a drive-through for carryout orders, according to the City Clerk’s Office. – Nicole Buntgen
U.S. News Ranks Nebraska Medical Center No. 1 in Nebraska
U.S. News & World Report ranked Nebraska Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in the state of Nebraska for the 14th straight year. The publication evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals nationwide to develop its annual list of Best Hospitals. U.S. News considered things like risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care in developing these rankings.
Omaha Streetcar Authority Approves Change Orders
In its July meeting, the Omaha Streetcar Authority approved change orders totaling $245,099 in its contract with Hawkins Construction regarding modifications to water main and other utility infrastructure related to the Farnam and Harney Street Bridges requested by MUD. Additionally, director Rick Gustafson reported that a large payment of nearly $7.4 million was made to CAF USA in June. Since accepting CAF’s bid to provide the streetcar vehicles, the authority has paid more than $15 million of the $47 million contract. - Isaiah Ang
Little Roots Market to Host Grand Opening in Crescent, IA
Little Roots Market, a self-serve farm stand, will hold a grand opening August 9 and 10 at 77 Old Lincoln Highway in Crescent, Iowa. Smokin Barrel BBQ Opening August 1 at New Location
Smokin Barrel BBQ will open August 1 at 2457 South 132nd Street just east of Fazoli’s north 132nd & West Center. The local barbecue spot relocated from 13508 Discovery Drive and will operate Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or until sold out. - Nicole Buntgen
Greenstreet Cycles to Close Remaining Store This September
Greenstreet Cycles will close its remaining shop at 225 South Washington Street in Papillion effective September 28. The Aksarben Village location closed back in May. Greenstreet has been in business since 2010. Owner Ben Swan said the bike industry has been tough lately. While the pandemic brought a new wave of riders, it was followed by an oversaturated market and competition from direct-to-consumer bike brands.
NeighborGood Expands to New Papillion Location
NeighborGood, a community pantry serving Sarpy County and Ralston, has moved to a new space at 1712 Charleston Drive in Papillion near 66th & Cornhusker Road. The nonprofit provides food, hygiene items, pet supplies and other items to those in need. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for September 16. – Nicole Buntgen
