CHI Health Center Omaha Convention Center Expansion Topping Out Soon

Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority will hold a topping-out ceremony February 16 to celebrate the placement of the final, highest beam in the CHI Health Center’s $200 million convention center expansion. The 90,000 sq. ft., 2-level addition on the east side features floor-to-ceiling glass walls and expands the number of meeting rooms from 16 to 41. Upon completion, CHI’s convention space will total 420,000 sq. ft. The existing convention center space will receive updates to flooring, woodwork and bathrooms.

Borsheims Plans Major Renovation of Regency Store

Borsheims, one of America’s largest independent jewelry stores, will renovate its store at Regency Shopping Center. The project will transform 20,000 sq. ft. of showroom space into an open-concept environment. Features include additional seating areas for private consultations, an updated luxury salon dedicated to high-end jewelry collections and a gold exterior façade. HDR is leading the design, while Kiewit is the contractor. Renovations will begin following Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting this May. The store will remain open during construction.

Nebraska Medicine requests dismissal of lawsuit

Nebraska Medicine has asked the Douglas County District Court to dismiss the lawsuit filed last month involving the University of Nebraska Board of Regents and Clarkson Regional Health Services. In a press release, Nebraska Medicine leadership and its Board of Directors said they are focused on moving forward under the single-member governance structure approved by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents last month.

Mid-America Manufacturing Begins Year on Weak Note

For the fourth time in the past five months, Creighton University’s Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, moved below growth neutral. The index, which ranges between 0 and 100 with 50.0 representing growth neutral, increased to a weak 49.6 from 47.6 in December.

Werner Enterprises Acquires Tennessee Trucking Company

Werner Enterprises, Inc., has acquired Tennessee-based First Enterprises, Inc., a dedicated trucking company known as FirstFleet, for approximately $245 million in cash. Werner will also separately acquire real estate properties directly from FirstFleet. The acquisition establishes Werner as the fifth-largest dedicated carrier in the United States.

Meddys to Open Second Omaha Location at One Pacific Place

Meddys plans to open a second Omaha location at One Pacific Place. The quick-casual Mediterranean restaurant has signed a lease for a 3,500 sq. ft. space at 10317 Pacific Street, formerly occupied by Andrés Tortillery, according to Holly Jones of the Lund Company. Opening is planned for this fall. Meddys’ existing Omaha location is at Village Pointe. Based in Wichita, Kan., Meddys was founded in 2014 and now has 15 locations in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Take 2 Omaha Opens in Former Rush Market Space

Take2 Omaha, a seasonal consignment store, has opened a new location inside Oak View Mall in the former Rush Market space. The business sells gently used and new children’s clothing, shoes, toys, books, baby equipment and furniture. – Nicole Buntgen

Burlington Social Opening February 6th in Little Italy

Burlington Social plans to open February 6 in the former Burlington League space at 1002 South 10th Street in Little Italy. Burlington Social is the third location in the Social family, joining Blackstone Social at 3910 Farnam Street, and Social 192 near 192nd & Pacific Street. In addition to the main bar, Burlington Social features a basement lounge called The Talk Back To Me Lounge, “a fun, laid-back space designed for late-night hangs, cocktails and a more intimate lounge vibe.”

55+ Residential Building Coming to Avenue One

A senior housing project will be soon underway in the Avenue One Good Life District. The housing will be built on vacant property at the southwest corner of 188th & Burke Steet, according to a building permit. The project consists of a 4-story residential building with 165 units, including 1- and 2-bedroom apartments. Amenities will include an indoor pool and spa area plus a basement parking garage. The project is called Attivo Trail and will cater to the 55+ active adult demographic. – Isaiah Ang

Crisp & Green Plans New Location in West Omaha

Crisp & Green plans to open a second location in the Shoppes of Legacy. According to a building permit for remodel, the health food restaurant chain will be located at 16902 Wright Plaza, Suite 195, the bay on the end of the building next to California Bronze Tanning. Crisp & Green has a current location at 225 North 80th Street and more than 45 locations throughout the country. – Isaiah Ang

Marigold’s Mercantile Opens in Aksarben Village

Marigold’s Mercantile, a home goods store, has opened in the former Book Nook space at 2115 South 67th Street in Aksarben Village next to Godfather’s Pizza. The shop offers curated home goods, pantry staples and locally made products. – Nicole Buntgen

Foodbank for the Heartland Opening New Building

Food Bank for the Heartland is closed while the organization moves into its recently completed 105,000 sq. ft. office and warehouse building on the northeast corner of 84th & L Streets. The food bank will officially open at the location on February 2. – Mark Champion

Twin Peaks Files for Bankruptcy but Restaurants Staying Open

Twin Hospitality Group Inc., the parent company of Twin Peaks Restaurant, has commenced voluntary chapter 11 proceedings. The filing is intended to reduce debt, maximize value for stakeholders and support long-term growth of its restaurant brands. The restaurant still plans to open its brand-new Omaha location next month in the Village Pointe West development. Founded in 2005, Twin Peaks has 114 locations in the United States and Mexico.

Avenue Two Consignment Opens Near 74th & Pacific

Avenue Two Consignment, a modern consignment boutique specializing in curated designer fashion, is now open at 1022 South 74th Plaza. Avenue Two carries designer handbags, dresses, tops and shoes, with one of the store’s signature highlights being its “denim bar,” an assortment of denim styles, fits and brands. Avenue Two was founded by Rachel Heiser and Meghan Conway Rowen, two Omaha moms who bonded over their shared time living in New York City and their mutual love of fashion.

Bellevue Takes Steps to Develop Possible “Racino”

The Bellevue City Council last week approved an option purchase agreement for land near the future Bellevue Bay waterpark for a possible “racino” project. Bellevue would give BELREV, LLC the option to purchase 22 acres for $1,915,220. The option agreement expires in January of 2027, however, it may be extended up to three more years. Under the terms of the agreement, the developer will pay an annual fee of 1 percent of the purchase price. – Isaiah Ang

Cold Stone Creamery Closes Two Stores, Opening One

Cold Stone Creamery earlier this week closed its stores at Midtown Crossing in Omaha and Nebraska Crossing in Gretna. The national ice cream chain has four other shops in Omaha, all of which are staying open. Cold Stone also plans to open a store soon on the southwest corner of 156th & State Street.

Benjamin’s Neighborhood Kitchen to Open January 30

Benjamin’s Neighborhood Kitchen will hold a grand opening celebration on January 30 at 3623 North 129th Street in Eagle Run Plaza in the former Copal Mexican Cuisine space. The restaurant reopened under new ownership and will offer 50-cent margaritas to the first 50 customers. – Nicole Buntgen

Mootz Pizza to Close Countryside Village Restaurant

Mootz will permanently close its Countryside Village restaurant at 8725 Shamrock Road on January 31. The family-owned pizzeria opened its brick-and-mortar location in August 2023 after starting as a food truck and is known for Neapolitan-style pizza. – Nicole Buntgen

Indoor Children’s Play Area Opening This Spring at 180th & Q

DOZE & DIG, an indoor recreation business, will open this spring at 18010 R Plaza, Suite 103, southwest of 180th & Q Street. Billed as “Nebraska’s first and only big, huge, gigantic, indoor sandbox,” DOZE & DIG will offer kids ages 8 and under more than 30 tons of sand and hundreds of sand toys such as bulldozers and tractors. Locally owned by Amanda Briardy, the business will have a private party room as well as a coffee bar, used book library and lounge for parents.

Tommy’s Express Car Wash Under Construction in La Vista

A Tommy’s Express Car Wash is under construction at 10779 Hillcrest Plaza in La Vista. The 4,625 sq. ft., conveyor-style car wash is framed and largely enclosed. The site is part of the Val Vista area northeast of 108th & Giles and just west of a pediatric dental office and Children’s Nebraska clinic.

MINISO Store Opens at Nebraska Crossing

MINISO has opened a store at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna. The store is located in the northwest part of the mall between Nike and Paradise Bakery. MINISO is a Chinese retail chain with approximately 8,000 stores worldwide. Nebraska Crossing’s website describes MINISO as a “global lifestyle retailer offering a curated selection of toys, plushies, collectibles, stationery, beauty essentials, home goods, fragrances, electronics and snacks.”

City Invites Residents to Participate in “We Make Omaha” Survey

Some 5,000 Omahans have been selected randomly for a survey designed in partnership with University of Nebraska at Omaha researchers. Residents who do not receive a postcard can still participate. The two surveys are part of “We Make Omaha,” the city’s new comprehensive plan, which will map out Omaha’s growth over the next 20 years. Both surveys are available at wemakeomaha.org/event/survey. Residents who receive a postcard should use their unique four-digit access code to complete the survey rather than take the open-access version.

Bath & Body Works at Oak View Mall Permanently Closing Today

The Bath & Body Works store at Oak View Mall is closing permanently. According to the store’s recorded voicemail message, the last day of business is Saturday, January 24. Bath & Boyd Works operates seven other stores in the Omaha metro area.

Prime IV Hydration & Wellness opens in Shadow Lake Towne Center

Prime IV Hydration & Wellness, an IV therapy and wellness spa, has opened at 7474 Towne Center Parkway in Papillion’s Shadow Lake Towne Center. The wellness concept offers intravenous hydration therapy, vitamin and nutrient infusions and injections aimed at energy, immunity, recovery and overall wellness. - Nicole Buntgen

Base Kamp Working on Two Additional Locations

Base Kamp is working on two additional locations. Its existing shop is located inside Nebraska Furniture Mart next to the longstanding Subway restaurant. The business model includes locally roasted coffee and other drinks, including beer and wine. Base Kamp is nearing completion of its location in Midtown Crossing next door to Garbo’s Salon. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha Sells Restores to Thrift World

Habitat for Humanity of Omaha announced today that it has sold its two ReStores to Thrift World, which operates eight second-hand and thrift locations in a three-state area. The sale will be final on March 1. The ReStore locations at 10910 Emmet Street and 1003 South 24th Street, will then be operated under the Thrift World brand. The sale includes buildings, inventory and trucks. Proceeds will be directed to Habitat’s core programs to build, finance and repair houses, as well as provide counseling and education to families.

Data Axle Leases Office Space at 113th & Blondo

Data Axle, a provider of business and marketing data, has leased a 9,168 sq. ft. office space at 11340 Blondo Street, according Ryan Ellis, CEO of PJ Morgan Real Estate, whose team handled lease negotiations. Data Axle was founded in Omaha, and in year past, was known as Infogroup. – Grow Omaha Staff

Shine the Light on Hunger Campaign Breaks Record

This year’s Shine the Light on Hunger Campaign raised a record-breaking $4.95 million and collected 216,237 pounds of nonperishable food to provide more than 15 million meals for neighbors in need. The annual campaign has invited community members to donate nonperishable food items to orange bins at participating locations around town for the past 19 years. Donations go to Food Back for the Heartland. – Mark Champion

Mixed-Use Development Coming to La Vista Greenfield Site

A 32-acre greenfield site in the Southport West commercial area may finally see development. The La Vista City Council reviewed a Planned Unit Development Plan Amendment and Preliminary Plat in this week’s meeting for a site northwest of Westport Parkway & Giles Road. The mixed-use development would include a 41,000 sq. ft., indoor recreation facility right on that corner. Future development includes a restaurant, dog park, brewery, multi-family housing and a possible TopGolf-like facility along Interstate 80. – Isaiah Ang

National Retailer Plans First Nebraska Store at Village Pointe

State & Liberty will become Village Pointe Shopping Center’s newest retailer when it opens its first Nebraska store. According to a building permit for remodel, the clothing store will take up approximately 1,000 sq. ft. State & Liberty is a men’s fashion store, specializing in business casual and dresswear using stretch material and having a more athletic fit. The Michigan-based retailer’s closest location is in Kansas City but it has more than 40 locations throughout the country. - Isaiah Ang

Yoshitomo Plans Second Restaurant in Old Market

A second Yoshitomo is apparently planning to open in downtown Omaha, according to a City of Omaha building permit to remodel an interior space at 1105 Harney Street in the Old Market. The space is just west of Jams American Grill and was prevously occupied by Mouth of the South. Yoshitomo is a nationally recognized sushi restaurant in Benson, founded David Utterback, a multi-time James Beard Award finalist. Utterback also has an omakase within Yoshitomo called Ota as well as Koji, a yakitori restaurant in Countryside Village. - Isaiah Ang

El Muchacho Alegre Taking Over Former On the Border Building

El Muchacho Alegre plans to open a Papillion restaurant at 8810 South 71st Plaza in the Shoppes at Market Pointe. The building was previously occupied by On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, which closed one year ago. Renovations are underway. El Muchacho Alegre has existing locations at 6222 North 72nd Street and 10177 South 168th Avenue.

Report Shows Nebraska Nonprofits Generate $23.1 Billion Annually

Nonprofit Association of the Midlands released a new report titled “Economic Impact of Nonprofits in Nebraska.” Report highlights include some impressive stats, like how 5,483 501(c) organizations operate and filed 2023 IRS Form 990 in Nebraska, or that $23.1 billion in revenue was generated by Nebraska nonprofits in 2023. Barnes & Noble to Open Third Omaha Location at Avenue One

Barnes & Noble will open its third Omaha location at Avenue One, the mixed-use development near 192nd & West Dodge Road, according to KETV. The bookstore will join retailers including Arhaus, West Elm, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn. Barnes & Noble currently operates Omaha-area stores near Oakview Mall and at Shadow Lake Towne Center. - Nicole Buntgen

Habitat for Humanity Sells ReStores to Thrift-Store Operator

Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is selling both its ReStore locations to a local thrift-store operator. The nonprofit stores sell new and used building materials, home décor and appliances at discounted prices with proceeds helping pay for new affordable houses. The ReStores will remain open. Employees have the opportunity to keep their jobs. The ReStores are located at 10910 Emmet Street and 1003 South 24th Street. Selling the stores allows Habitat to focus solely on Omaha’s growing housing shortage. – Mark Champion & Jeff Beals

Two More Businesses To Close at Westroads Mall

Attic Salt and Merle Norman will not renew their leases at Westroads Mall at 10000 California Street. Attic Salt, a gift and apparel retailer, is expected to close by January 31. Merle Norman, a long-running cosmetics store, will also close as its owner retires after 35 years in business. - Nicole Buntgen

Buc-ee’s Plans to Build First Nebraska Location in Gretna

Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based chain of mega gas stations, plans to open its first Nebraska location in Gretna’s Good Life District. The 74,000 sq. ft. store would be located on 43 acres southeast of Interstate 80 & Highway 31. That’s south of Nebraska Crossing and east of Flying J. To pave the way for the project, the City of Gretna voted to annex the land at last night’s meeting, according to Mayor Mike Evans. Buc-ee’s stations attract customers from hundreds of miles and become tourist attractions unto themselves. The closest existing Buc-ee’s are in Northern Colorado and Springfield, Mo.

Upscale Steakhouse from Texas Coming to West Omaha

Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, a Houston-based restaurant, will open its first Nebraska location in the summer of 2027 in the Avenue One development southeast of 192nd & West Dodge Road. The 11,000 sq. ft. restaurant will seat up to 350 guests and feature Perry’s “Rare and Well Done” experience, open kitchen, wine wall, Bar 79 with island seating, patio dining and four private rooms. Perry’s has 23 existing locations in nine states, with the closest existing ones in Chicago and Denver. – Nicole Buntgen

Taqueria Tijuana Taking Over Former Which Wich Space

Taqueria Tijuana has signed a lease at 307 North 114th Street for its third location. The Mexican restaurant will operate in a 2,250 sq. ft. space formerly occupied by Which Wich, according to Todd and Will Schneidewind of NAI NP Dodge, who represented the landlord in lease negotiations. Taqueria Tijuana’s original restaurant is at 5139 South 24th Street in the South Omaha Main Street Business District. The second location is at 12242 K Plaza in the L Street Marketplace.

Francesca’s to Close All Stores Nationwide

Francesca’s, a women’s boutique chain, is closing all brick-and-mortar stores after more than 25 years in business. The Houston-based company has not announced when stores will officially close. Francesca’s currently operates three locations in the Omaha area, including Westroads Mall, Nebraska Crossing and Village Pointe. - Nicole Buntgen
