The University of Nebraska Medical Center has been designated an R1 institution by Carnegie, placing it among the top research and doctoral-degree universities in the country. The Research Activity 1 designation, which officially begins in April, is the highest classification for an educational institution from the Institutions of Higher Learning by Carnegie. UNMC is one of only 187 universities in the country to receive the designation in 2025. It is based on research activity and number of research doctorates granted.
