Black Bag
★ ★ ★ ★
Black Bag is a movie that packs a great amount of story into 90 minutes of runtime. It’s not an action movie – it’s a dramatic thriller. The drama comes wrapped in well-crafted dialogue that builds both story and tension. It’s masterfully shot with simple, beautiful set design that aids the isolation the characters feel.
While I highly recommend this movie, it comes with a caveat. You must be in the mood for a complex intellectual spy thriller. This film requires your utmost attention. Blink and you risk getting lost.

A British intelligence officer, George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) leads a team of spies: his wife Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett), Freddie Smalls (Tom Burke), Clarissa Dubose (Marisa Abela), Col. James Stokes (Regé-Jean Page) and Dr. Zoe Vaughan (Naomie Harris). Freddie is dating Clarissa and James is dating Zoe. It’s kind of an MI-6 human resources nightmare.
George is tasked with finding out who on his team has leaked a critical satellite program, code-named Severus. He’s given one week to do so, hoping to clear his wife’s name as he investigates.

George is a human lie detector, a polygraph expert and a behavioral strategist. Through the film, we get the sense that George knows exactly what he’s doing. Fassbender is an excellent choice as George, able to pull off stoic dry humor and wit with finesse and panache.
It’s fun to see the characters interact with one another and see their unique talents and abilities unfold within the story. We don’t really want any of them to be the mole, but it sure is exciting to guess who it might be.
Black Bag is directed by veteran filmmaker Steven Soderbergh who’s known for understated, low-budget films. Even his big-budget movies like Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven and Magic Mike have an independent, film festival feel. Soderberg is a master of taking the simplistic and making it entertaining and interesting. His skills are on full display here.

The movie is written by David Koepp, whose credits include Mission: Impossible, 2002’s Spider-Man, and David Fincher’s Panic Room. In Black Bag, he’s crafted an impeccably tight screenplay that makes full use of every page.
Don’t be dismayed if you don’t fully follow the intricate story, you’ll likely want to see it again. I certainly blinked at least once and look forward to watching it again to see what I missed.
