Several readers have asked about Hacienda Real, the Mexican restaurant planned for the former Old Chicago space near 78th & Cass Street. Workers are remodeling the space, reconfiguring the layout and adding new walls. While the exterior signage has been in place for some time now, opening is still at least two months away.

Barrel & Vine has opened at 1311 South 203rd Street. The restaurant, bar and live music venue features high-end whiskies and a curated selection of wines. Perhaps most notable, Barrel & Vine has a rooftop pool, allowing patrons to take a dip if they are so inclined.

“Eat” restaurant from Dodge, Neb. will be featured at the Dandelion Pop Up @ the Flatiron Brunch Series at 1722 St Mary’s Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here’s the description: “Country inspired, city influenced brunch all stars. Momma Lin’s Cinnamon Rolls, Toffee Gravy, Browned Butter Pancakes, Fried Chicken Popper Biscuit Sandwich, Buttermilk Biscuit and Eat’s Country Sausage Gravy, Old Fashioned Rice Pudding, Roasted Fruit, Fat Head Honey Nut Granola & more.”

Contour Nail Bar, and upscale nail salon, plans to open in November on the ground level of the Right at Home building at 67th & Mercy Street in Aksarben Village.

ALDI has opened its new grocery store on the northwest corner of 192nd & West Center Road. Additionally, ALDI plans to open another new location later this year in the former Fresh Thyme space at 132nd & West Center Road. Two Blockbuster Developments Move Forward

Two massive development projects received a green light from the City of Omaha Planning Board at its monthly meeting last week.

The board granted final plat approval to The Crossroads development at 72nd & Dodge Street as well as the large data center campus planned for the northwest corner of Highway 133 (Blair High Road) and State Street.

Lockwood Development and Century Development are teaming up to redevelop The Crossroads. Crews have razed the old mall and are now preparing the site for construction. Plans call for dividing the 39-acre site into 17 lots and two outlots.

The $553 million Crossroads development will be a mixed-use, walkable village with 350,000 sq. ft. of retail/restaurant, 250 apartment units, office space, senior living, a 150-room hotel and 2.5 acres of public space. The existing Target store will remain. Opening is planned for 2024.

The northwest Omaha data center is a mystery. Neither city officials nor local economic developers have released the name of the company that will occupy the 260-acre site. According to planning board documents, the data center would have 1.4 million sq. ft. of floor space, plus substantial amounts of outdoor equipment on site.

One giant leap for west Omaha transportation – The new 180th Street bridge between West Dodge Road and Blondo Street is now open for traffic. The bridge spans the historic Lincoln Highway, Union Pacific Railroad tracks and a creek. 180th Street north of Blondo is still under construction and will not open until 2022.

For the 21st straight year, student enrollment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center set a record high with 4,387 students enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year. This represents an increase of 148 students, or 3.5% over last year’s record of 4,239. International enrollment is up by 21% over last fall, a full recovery from the drop in international enrollment last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Construction is coming along nicely on a Rocket Carwash on the southeast corner of 168th & West Maple Road. It is one of 20 metro area locations that Rocket eventually plans to open.

The 50th annual Rockbrook Village Art Fair takes place this weekend – Saturday, September 11th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Grow Omaha’s Brad Williams, owner of Brad Williams Photography, will be exhibiting. His booth will be on the far west end.

The planned Nebraska MultiSport Complex to be constructed in La Vista apparently plans to sell the Olympic pool it has held in storage for several years. The pool was used for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials held at the CHI Health Center Omaha. Plans had called for the pool to be used in a future natatorium to be constructed in the Southport East area near Interstate 80 and Harrison Street. Even if the pool is sold, the complex still plans to move forward.

Steel beams are going up on the site of a future West Gate Bank branch office on the north side of West Maple Road at 177th Street. When it opens next year, it will be the fourth Omaha location for the Lincoln-based bank.

Sam Estivo and Jorge Sotolongo of NAI NP Dodge are marketing the former Creative Center school building for lease at 10826-10850 Emmet Street. Built in 1999, the building has 39,400 sq. ft. on 4.58 acres.
