Omaha Recognized as a Desirable Place for Active Lifestyles

Omaha received a favorable ranking in WalletHub’s list of “2022’s Best & Worst Cities for an Active Lifestyle,” coming in at #26 among the nation’s 100 largest cities.

The report, which was released January 5th, compared cities based on 34 key indicators of an active lifestyle. Data points included average monthly fitness club fees, bike score, share of physically inactive adults, and many other metrics.

The only cities in our region to rank higher than Omaha were Denver (#9), Madison, Wisc. (#12) and Minneapolis (#13). Looking at other nearby cities, Lincoln was #47. Kansas City was #73. Des Moines, Iowa didn’t make the list because it is not big enough.

The top five cities where (in order): San Francisco; Chicago, New York, San Diego and Honolulu.

How about the least active cities in America? The bottom five cities were (starting at last place and going backwards): North Las Vegas, Nev.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Wichita, Kan.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Irving, Tex.

Interestingly, Omaha was tied for number 1 on the list for most tennis courts per capita.

“…Two of Americans’ top four New Year’s resolutions are “exercising more” and “losing weight,” the WalletHub article stated. “At the same time, as many as 80 percent to 91 percent of people fail to keep their resolutions each
year.”

Construction bids are due January 21st for the 6-story Hampton Inn planned on the southwest corner of 44th & Douglas Street. The 96-room, 115,758 sq. ft. hotel will be adjacent to the recently opened Home 2 Suites by Hilton hotel and will serve the rapidly growing University of Nebraska Medical Center area.

Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA) plans to begin construction soon on the Farnam Pier, a 235-foot structure that will extend from the east side of Heartland of America Park, over Union Pacific Railroad tracks, and then over the west bank of the Missouri River. Workers will drive pilings for the structure now while the river is at its typically low winter depth. Once the pilings are in place, installing the rest of the pier structure will require the largest crane ever to be used in downtown Omaha. MECA is in charge of building and managing the three Riverfront parks, which are currently undergoing a $300 million renovation project.

Speaking of Heartland of America Park, construction is coming along on the Skate Ribbon, a 300-foot curving skate path that will be used for ice skating during the cold months and roller skating the rest of the year. Thanks to new technology, the Skate Ribbon will be frozen in late fall and early spring even though high temperatures are normally above freezing during those times of year.

Southpaw Veterinary Clinic is planning to open in the first quarter of this year at 192nd & Q Street under the leadership of Dr. Kati Lackovic and Dr. Trent Shrader. The clinic will specialize in preventive care and medicine for small animals, avians, exotics and non-traditional pets.

The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce will hold ribbon cuttings on January 10th at Hair Haven for its newly renovated salon at 1211 Golden Gate Drive and January 11th for Rejuvenating Women’s new office space at 5150 North 90th Street in Omaha.

Business News

Local Business News Sponsored by FranNet of The Heartland:

Real Estate News from CoStar – After a blistering year, the housing market shows no sign of retreat entering 2022.

Demand continues apace, especially in cities in the Mountain West and Southeast where population growth has been particularly strong, while the number of homes available for purchase has not kept up. Consequently, price growth has been meteoric during the pandemic, and while that may slow, it’s not happening yet.

The median price for existing homes grew by 13.9 percent year-over-year in November, according to the National Association of Realtors. The Case-Shiller home price index grew by 19.1 percent from October 2020 to October 2021.

So, what about the Omaha housing market? According to a November 30th market report from NP Dodge, the median sale price for new homes in the Omaha area increased 8.7 percent to $401,185 over the past year. Existing homes increased 8 percent to $243,000.

Comfort Keepers, a locally owned homecare agency, has acquired a 10,883 sq. ft. office property at 4060 Vinton Street. The company is remodeling the building for its headquarters relocation with training space to be shared with Quality Career Pathways.

Since declining to a record low in April of last year, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, has remained above growth neutral for 19 of 20 months. The Business Conditions Index, which ranges between 0 and 100, expanded to a strong 64.6 from November’s healthy 60.2.

Despite being a first-time participant in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif. on January 1st, Mutual of Omaha was awarded the parade’s Director Award, which recognizes the most outstanding artistic design and use of floral and non-floral materials. The 55-foot Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom/RFD-TV float featured the king of the jungle leaping over a safari jeep driven by current Wild Kingdom host Peter Gros.
