Said the Egg to the Mustard: “I’ll Be Deviled If I Do…” – The Deviled Egg Company plans to open in September in a former GNC space next to Michael’s at Shadow Lake Town Center in Papillion. The Ralston-based company sells primarily online and through a food truck. In addition to traditional deviled eggs, other choices include sriracha, Mexican, BBQ, buffalo blue cheese and many others.

A Sweet Expansion – Sweet Magnolia’s Bake Shop will open a second location in the Ashton Building in the Millwork Commons district. The original shop has been operating for five years at 813 North 40th Street.

We Have the Meats – Construction has started on a new Arby’s location on the south side of West Center Road at 185th Street.

New Retailer in Regency Area – Eden’s Preserve has opened in a 960 sq. ft. space next to PLNK OMA at One Pacific Place. The company provides beauty, home, pet and wellness products that are 100 percent natural, eco-friendly, and come from family-owned small businesses.

Back to the Alamo – After being closed for an extended period because of the pandemic, Alamo Drafthouse will reopen its Southport/La Vista location September 3rd. The Midtown Crossing location will open a couple months later.

“Shop Differentli” – The 20,000 sq. ft. ALDI grocery store under construction northwest of 192nd & West Center Road is coming along nicely. The building is enclosed and signage is in place. Much works still remains to be done, however. This will be the ninth ALDI in the metro area.

Branch Bank in Little Bohemia – Dundee Bank will officially open its third branch at 1407 South 13th Street in the Little Bohemia district on Thursday, August 19th. The building features a hand-refurbished Little Bohemia-themed mural on the building’s north exterior wall. Existing locations are in Blackstone, and of course, Dundee.

The Big Story

Major Data Center Looking at NW Omaha

The City of Omaha Planning Board last week approved a “large-project special-use” permit, possibly paving the way for Omaha’s latest mega data center. The metro area is already home to billions of dollars’ worth of data centers for Facebook (Papillion) and Google (two in Council Bluffs and one in Papillion). Several smaller-but-substantial data centers operate in the area including Yahoo, Fidelity, The Travelers Companies and others.

The latest proposed data center is massive, and the company that would occupy it is being kept secret by local economic development officials. That is standard practice for large development projects involving major corporations.

The proposed center would sit on 261 acres of undeveloped land on the northwest corner of Blair High Road (Nebraska Highway 133) and State Street. Several buildings, totaling more than 1.43 million square feet, would be constructed on the site as well as several outdoor equipment yards.

Architectural renderings presented to the Planning Board show that the buildings would look like large, elongated, high-ceiling warehouses constructed of concrete tilt-up panels. Based on data centers of similar size, this project could be in the billion-dollar range.

Additional City of Omaha approvals will be necessary before the project can legally move forward.

Construction is expected to begin soon on a 26,034 sq. ft. flight line support facility at Offutt Air Force Base. As part of the project, 12 buildings will be demolished.

The Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation has changed its name to Grow Sarpy. Hmmm…that name sounds kind of familiar. The organization is affiliated with the Greater Omaha Chamber and facilitates economic development in Sarpy County, the third-most-populous county in the state.

Equitable Bank’s new office at 202nd & Pacific Street is now operating on a daily basis. The branch is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as Saturdays 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Construction is expected to begin August 24th on the Carter Lake Community Center at 1120 Willow Drive in Carter Lake, Iowa. Plans call for the renovation of the library and the addition of a 13,500 sq. ft. clubhouse.

Grow Omaha co-founder Trenton Magid represented Mitchell Properties, LLC, in the purchase of a 1.83-acre lot at 1402 South Washington in Papillion. The location can also be described as the southwest corner of 84th & Highway 370 next to McDonald’s and StorageMart.

Plans for call for a Tommy’s Express Carwash to be constructed on the site, which will be the first of multiple Tommy’s locations in Sarpy County. The sale closed this week. Development will start immediately. The land had been owned by CVS Pharmacy, which purchased it in 2013 but never built a store.

Construction should begin in late September on an auditorium addition at Bellevue West High School at 1501 Thurston Avenue.

Berkshire Hathaway reported a 7 percent gain in profit for the second quarter as the Omaha-based conglomerate saw improvements in its railroad, utilities and energy holdings. Berkshire earned $28.1 billion in profit during the second quarter compared to $26.3 billion last year.

Honor Technology, Inc. of San Francisco has acquired Omaha-based Home Instead. The combined companies generate more than $2 billion in annual revenue. Home Instead will maintain its brand and operate under its name as a subsidiary of Honor. Home Instead CEO Jeff Humber will continue to lead the Omaha company.
